  • A modular programming approach for simulation/control of turbocharged diesel engines is investigated. The MATLAB/SIMULINK, which provides easy construction of various control modules and handy retrieval of objects, is adopted as a programming environment. The mathematical models for diesel engines are utilized from the literature. The object-oriented modules, which represent mechanical parts or theoretical algorithms for engines, are easily transferable to other application programs in the same environment. The simulation model is applied to a 4 strokes diesel engine. Details of the block diagrams of example modules are demonstrated. Finally, a PI controller and a sliding mode controller are applied to the simulator constructed for a typical turbocharged diesel engine.

  • In order to operate a combine harvester at the optimum conditions and maximum performance, a forward speed control system(FSCS) was designed and develped. The FSCS consisted of engine, continuously variable V-belt transmission, threshing unit, traveling unit, detecting unit, and controller. Each components of the system were mathematically modeled. By a computer simulation, the effects of control parameters such as hydraulic piston speed, speed ratio, dead band of engine speed on the system performance were analysed, and the optimum control conditions were identified. The system appeared to be the most stable at the hydraulic piston speed of 10.6mm/s and the speed ratio of 0.4. The proper dead band of engine speed appeared to be 30rpm through the simulation and verification tests.

  • The clutch is a subcomponent of the transmission that is designed to engage and disengage power flow between the engine and the transmission. Recently, the engine power of automobile has been continuously increased because of customer's demand for the bigger one. As the engine power is increased, the vibration transmitted to the hydraulic clutch operating system has been increased. Therefore the demand for the reduction of clutch pedal vibration during the operation of the clutch system has been increased. This paper describes the pressure pulsation reduction characteristics of the damper cylinder which is applied to the hydraulic clutch operating system. And the purpose of this study is to confirm the availability of a simulation model and investigating the test results of hydraulic clutch operating system. The test results are compared with the simulation results. Therefore it may be concluded that the simulation model and test results will be very useful f3r the design of hydraulic clutch damper cylinder.

  • Heat transfer experiment is carried out during the performance test of the 4-cylinder 4-stroke cycle turbo-charged gasoline engine. Cycle simulation employing the measured pressure in cylinder, the cooling water temperature and flow rate and others is carried out in order to calculate the gas temperature in cylinder. In this simulation combustion process was simulated by Annand's two zone model and suction, compression, and other processes are calculated completely. From this simulation, we can obtain not only the heat transfer coefficient but also the flame speed, turbulent burning velocity, flame factor and the boiling condition of cooling passage. The results are investigated with engine speed, equivalence ratio and spark advance.

  • In order to reduce NOx and Soot emissions simultaneously, characteristics of diesel spray and combustion were investigated by numerical simulation with StarCD in this paper. This work focuses on effect of Spin Injection. A simulation model of combustion, spray and emissions is developed for heavy duty marine diesel engine application. Simulation is performed with change of spray angle between first and second directions at fixed engine speed, injection timing, injection duration and etc. The results show that Spin Spray Injection method can reduce NOx emission. And the results show that the 1st injection considerably interfere with 2nd injection characteristics.

  • The simulation of power cycle and unsteady gas exchange processes in the inlet and exhaust systems of the single-cylinder 2-stroke cycle compression ignition engine was studied in this paper. In power cycle process, the single-zone model proposed by Whitehouse and Way was used, and the convective and radiative heat transfer from cylinder contents to surroundings was considered. To solve the equations for gas exchange process, the generalized method of characteristics including area change, friction, heat transfer and entropy gradients was used. Also with the path line calculation, the entropy change along the path line and the variation of specific heat due to the change of temperature and the composition of cylinder gas were considered. As a result of the simulation, the change of pressure and temperature in the cylinder against the crank angle, the rate of net heat release, and the change of properties at each point in the inlet and exhaust pipe against the crank angle were obtained. The engine performances under various operating conditions were also calculated.

  • Introduction of a direct engine-PTO driveline to agricultural tractors has reduced production cost and increased transmission efficiency of the PTO driveline. However, this type of PTO driveline has caused a severe rattle noise in the PTO gearbox under idle conditions. This study was conducted to investigate the causes of the rattle noise and the effects of driveline parameters on it. A mathematical model was developed for a direct engine-PTO driveline. The model was proved experimentally to be accurate enough to simulate the dynamic characteristics of the PTO driveline motions. The simulation study showed that the rattle noise was caused by collisions between the driving and driven gears in the PTO gearbox due to velocity variation of the gears, which was induced by torque fluctuations from the engine. It was also found that the rattle noise decreased with the drag torque and mass moment of inertia of the engine flywheel. Smaller mass moment of inertia of the driven gears and backlash also reduced the rattle noise. However, increasing the drag torque and mass moment of the engine flywheel or decreasing the backlash and mass moment of inertia of the driven gears were limited practically by their detrimental effects on transmission efficiency, gear strength and smooth meshing of the gears.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze both the design and off design performance simulation of the PW206C turbo shaft engine used in the development of the smart UAV (Unmanned Ariel Vehicle) by KARI(Korean Aerospace Research Institute). Its mainly aims to investigate performance behavior at the un-installed and installed conditions. The ways employed to be able to analyze the performance extensively were mainly carried out by comparison of performance simulation results from both the commercial program 'GASTURB 9' using compressor maps generated by Genetic algorithms (GAs) or Scaling Method, and the engine manufacturer's program 'EEPP'. Off-design performance analysis was performed through matching of both mass flow and work between engine components. The set of performance simulations of the developed analytical models was performed by a commercial program package (GASTURB 9) that provides great flexibility in the choice of independent variables of the overall system. The results from the simulations are used to compare turbo shaft engine (PW206C) performance data obtained by the EEPP. At un-installed condition, it was found that the results with the compressor map generated by GAs were relatively agreed well than those with the compressor map generated by the Scaling Method. The performance calculation results using the compressor map generated by GAs were compared at un-installed condition and installed conditions with ECS-off and ECS-Max in variation of altitude, gas generator speed and flight speed.

  • We have simulated the performance of a simple engine model with a gas turbine engine simulation program based on CFD. 2-dimensional Navier-Stokes code for the viscous flow was applied to simulate a compressor and a turbine, and the chemical equilibrium code with the lumped method was applied to simulate the combustor. Unsteady-flow phenomenon between rotor and stator of the compressor and the turbine was analyzed by steady mixing-plane method. In this way, the influence of the turbine blade pitch on the engine was investigated. It was shown that the compressor is operated at more higher pressure conditions as narrower the pitch distance of the turbine.
