  • This paper presents the friction characteristics of pb-fres pin bushing bearings for an automotive gasoline engine. The external load is 100 N to 600 N and the speed of the pin bushing bearing is 1000 rpm to 3000 rpm against the rubbing surfaces. And the contact modes of rubbing surfaces between a piston pin and a pb-free pin bushing specimen are a dry friction, an oil lubricated friction and a mixed friction that is starved by a lack of engine oil. Two influential factors of a contact rubbing modes and a material property are very important parameters on the tribological performance of a friction characteristic between a piston pin and a pb-free pin bushing. The experimental result shows that the pin bushing speed of 2000 rpm shows a typical oil film lubricated sliding contact mode in which means that as the applied load is increased, the friction loss is increasing. But other contact mode depending on the speed and the load may affect to the fiction coefficient without a regular and uniform trend. In summary, the oil lubricated rubbing surface definitely decreases a running-in period in short and increase oil film stiffness, and this may leads the reduction of a friction loss.

  • With the development of the automobile industry, technologies for parts of an automobile with more convenient functions have progressed, but the manual clutch developed at the first phase of inventing means of transport still remains at the early stage of the automatic transmission despite numerous research and efforts. The traditional automatic transmission is mainly used in small cars and personal RV vehicles that include the slipped clutch disk. However, this research seeks an innovative technology that can be applied to all types of transportation operating the clutch, such as small cars, large vehicles, farm machines and vessels. In order to accurately decide the joint timing of the clutch disk according to the output of engine power that differs depending on driving conditions of vehicles, and to apply the half clutch state which frequently occurs in the manual transmission, the rpm of the engine can be used as the base to decide the joint timing of the clutch disk. This research has developed an electronic clutch module that can transmit the engine power by moving and jointing the clutch disk as much as the engine rpm increases.

  • Turbocharger has a main purpose on recycling of the exhaust gas from the engine cylinder. On the basis of the facility characteristics, the turbocharger supported on floating ring bearings has some problems such as the large volume, oil supplement for lubrication and high power loss due to high operating torque. The air foil bearing has been studied as the bearing element to be able to alternate the floating ring bearing without the problems of the floating ring bearing. In this study, the air foil bearing has 2 parts; journal and thrust bearings, and the test facility consists of the engine, exhaust and intake parts. In addiction, the specification of the turbocharger follows a small turbocharger for SUV engine. The engine speed is varied from 750 (idle rpm) to 2,500 rpm and then, the rotating speed of the turbocharger rotor is accelerated from 0 to 100,000 rpm. From those experiments, the comparison between the performances of the air foil bearing and floating ring bearing is conducted and the results show that the air foil bearing has less power loss, maximum 770 watt, than the floating ring bearing, maximum 5,110 watt. This result verifies that the air foil bearing is more efficient and able to output more power under the same condition of the input power.

  • In this research, numerical analysis was performed to determine the effects of hydrogen on biogas combustion for homogeneous charged compression ignition (HCCI) engines. The target engine specifications were a 2300cc displacement volume, 13:1 compression ratio, 15kW of electricity, and 1.2 bar boost pressure. The engine speed was fixed to 1800rpm. By varying the excess air ratio and hydrogen contents, the cylinder pressure, nitric oxide, and carbon dioxide were measured as a function of the hydrogen contents. According to preliminary studies related to the reaction mechanism for methane combustion and oxidation, a GRI 3.0 mechanism as the base mechanism was selected for HCCI combustion calculations describing the detailed reaction mechanism. By adding hydrogen, NO was increased while $CO_2$ was decreased. The cylinder pressure was also increased, having advanced timing for the maximum cylinder pressure and pressure rise region. Furthermore, lean operation limits were extended by adding hydrogen to the HCCI engine.

  • Swirl and tumble flows in an engine in-cylinder have been simulated by using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code, and the results are validated in comparison with experimental data. The large eddy simulation based on the Smagorinsky model and the fractional step method is adopted to describe the turbulence of in-cylinder flows and to save computing time, respectively. The main purpose of this study is connected with the effect of various conditions of intake flows on formation and development of in-cylinder tumble and swirl motions. The engine speeds considered are 1000 rpm and 3000 rpm for intake flows with inclination angles between $-10^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ}$ at deflection angles of $0^{\circ}$, $22.5^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$. The results are discussed by visualizing flow fields and by evaluating parameters in relation to vortex intensity such as swirl and tumble ratios.

  • Performance analysis and test of a 50kW micro gas turbine is carried out. The present study was initiated in 1996 by KIMM researchers to develope a 50kW class turbogenerator gas turbine engine for hybrid vehicle propulsion system. but with its low emission and compactness, it seemed that it can also be applied as a source of distributed power generation. In this study, general description of the KIMM's efforts to acquire performance test skills of the self-made 50kW micro gas turbine engine. At present, non-load performance test up to 615000 rpm was accomplished and is expected to make through 80,000 rpm by the end of year. Several revisions in design and manufacture were made during the course of experiments. The resulting outputs is thought to be valuable for the further refinement of the system for eventual commercialization of the product.

  • In this study are determined the unsteady temperature and thermal stress fields for a domestic 4-cylinder, 4-cycle gasoline engine cylinder head by the three-dimensional finite element method. A representative part of the cylinder head is modelled as a combination of hexahedron isoparametric elements, and the time-dependent temperature and the heat transfer coefficient of the gas are imposed as the thermal boundary conditions for the engine speeds of 500 rpm and 2000 rpm. The obtained results, which are represented graphically, indicate that the amplitudes of temperature fluctuation during a cycle are about 10.deg. C and 3.deg. C respectively on the surface of combustion chamber, and the maximum temperature fields occur at 30.deg. , 10.deg. respectively before the initiation of the exhaust stroke. Thermal stress fields due to non-uniform temperature distributions show that compressive stress is much larger than tensile stress throughout a cycle. It is also found that the compressive stress varies with substantial amplitude between the exhaust port and ignition plug hole, and the high tensile stress with small fluctuation occurs between exhaust port and the adjacent head bolt hole.

  • Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system can be used to improve fuel economy, performance and emissions. This study is identified the effect of VVT in terms of wide open throttle torque, Residual gas fraction, volume efficiency. Engine cycle simulations are performed on 2.0L DOHC in-line 4-cylinder SI engine by using WAVE of Ricardo. Results of the simulations had good agreement with WOT torque experimental data, and helped to predict the tendency of performance as the valve timings change. WOT torque was higher when intake valves were closed early for low rpm and late for high rpm.
