Effect of Engine Friction on Vehicle Fuel Economy during Warm-up (웜업시 엔진 마찰이 차량 모드 연비에 미치는 영향)

  • An improvement of vehicle fuel economy is one of the most important topic in automotive engineering. Lots of engineers make efforts to achieve 1% of fuel economy improvement. Engine friction is an important factor influencing vehicle fuel economy. This paper focuses on effect of engine friction on vehicle fuel economy during warm-up. A computer simulation is one of the powerful tools in automotive engineering field. Recently Simulation is attempting to virtual experiment not using expensive instruments. It is possible to presuppose fuel economy by changing the characteristic of accessories using CRUISE(vehicle simulation software). In this paper, fuel consumption at each part of the vehicle is analyzed by both of experiment and simulation. The results of fuel economy analysis on experiment substitute for Cruise to calculate fuel economy. The simulation data such as engine speed, brake torque, shift pattern, vehicle speed, fuel consumption level is well correlated to experiment data. In this paper, the change of warm-up time, faster or slower, through simulation is performed. As a result of the fast warm-up, fuel economy is improved up to 1.7%.

An Experimental Study on the Clutch Type Water Pump of Diesel Passenger Vehicle for Reducing Fuel Consumption and CO2 Emission (연비 개선 및 CO2 저감을 위한 승용디젤 차량의 클러치타입 워터펌프 적용에 따른 실험적 연구)

  • A typical cooling system of an engine relies on a water pump that circulates the coolant through the system. The pump is typically driven by the crankshaft through a mechanical link with engine starting. In order to reduce the friction and warm-up time of an engine, the clutch-type water pump (CWP) was applied in 2.0 liter diesel vehicle. The clutch-type water pump can force cooling water to supply into an engine by the operation of an electromagnetic clutch equipped as the inner part of pump system. The onset of CWP is decided by temperature of cooling water and engine oil. And, the control logic for an optimal operation of the clutch-type water pump was developed and applied in engine and vehicle tests. In this study, the warm-up time was measured with the conventional water pump and clutch-type water pump in engine tests. And the emission and the fuel consumption were evaluated under NEDC mode in vehicle tests. Also, tests were carried out for the various temperature conditions starting the operation of CWP. From the results of the study, the application of CWP can improve the fuel consumption and $CO_2$ reduction by about 3%.

STUDY OF CORRELATION BETWEEN WETTED FUEL FOOTPRINTS ON COMBUSTION CHAMBER WALLS AND UBHC IN ENGINE START PROCESSES

  • Unburned hydrocarbon (UBHC) emissions from gasoline engines remain a primary engineering research and development concern due to stricter emission regulations. Gasoline engines produce more UBHC emissions during cold start and warm-up than during any other stage of operation, because of insufficient fuel-air mixing, particularly in view of the additional fuel enrichment used for early starting. Impingement of fuel droplets on the cylinder wall is a major source of UBHC and a concern for oil dilution. This paper describes an experimental study that was carried out to investigate the distribution and 'footprint' of fuel droplets impinging on the cylinder wall during the intake stroke under engine starting conditions. Injectors having different targeting and atomization characteristics were used in a 4-Valve engine with optical access to the intake port and combustion chamber. The spray and targeting performance were characterized using high-speed visualization and Phase Doppler Interferometry techniques. The fuel droplets impinging on the port, cylinder wall and piston top were characterized using a color imaging technique during simulated engine start-up from room temperature. Highly absorbent filter paper was placed around the circumference of the cylinder liner and on the piston top to collect fuel droplets during the intake strokes. A small amount of colored dye, which dissolves completely in gasoline, was used as the tracer. Color density on the paper, which is correlated with the amount of fuel deposited and its distribution on the cylinder wall, was measured using image analysis. The results show that by comparing the locations of the wetted footprints and their color intensities, the influence of fuel injection and engine conditions can be qualitatively and quantitatively examined. Fast FID measurements of UBHC were also performed on the engine for correlation to the mixture formation results.

Exhaust Emissions Characteristics on Driving Cycle Mode and Ignition Advance Condition Change of CNG/LPLI Bi-Fuel Vehicle (CNG/LPLI Bi-Fuel 자동차에서 주행시험 모드와 점화진각에 따른 배출가스 특성)

  • Recently rise in oil prices feet the burden on not only diesel vehicle driver but also LPG vehicle driver, and get interested in various way to reduce fuel costs. In this study discuss on exhaust emissions characteristics on driving cycle mode and ignition advance condition change of CNG/LPLI Bi-Fuel vehicle. Experimental test was performed by changing the conditions of fuel (LPG/CNG), spark advance (Base, $10^{\circ}CA$, $15^{\circ}CA$), and driving mode (FTP-75, HWFET, and NEDC). In case of CO emission, in the order of CNG Base, CNG S/A10, S/A15 condition are average reduced -21%, -35%, -29% respectively compared to LPG fuel. The active emission reduction from the initial engine start, spark retard is likely to be beneficial in catalyst warm-up and improve combustion stability rather than spark advance.
