The simulation of power cycle and unsteady gas exchange processes in the inlet and exhaust systems of the single-cylinder 2-stroke cycle compression ignition engine was studied in this paper. In power cycle process, the single-zone model proposed by Whitehouse and Way was used, and the convective and radiative heat transfer from cylinder contents to surroundings was considered. To solve the equations for gas exchange process, the generalized method of characteristics including area change, friction, heat transfer and entropy gradients was used. Also with the path line calculation, the entropy change along the path line and the variation of specific heat due to the change of temperature and the composition of cylinder gas were considered. As a result of the simulation, the change of pressure and temperature in the cylinder against the crank angle, the rate of net heat release, and the change of properties at each point in the inlet and exhaust pipe against the crank angle were obtained. The engine performances under various operating conditions were also calculated.
This paper deals with mathematical modeling of a 75-ton open-cycle Liquid Propellant Rocket Engine (LPRE) and the steady state simulation based on a nominal operating point. Each component of open-cycle LPRE may be classified into seven major categories using thermodynamics and dynamics characteristics. To simplify the simulation model of LPRE in this paper, we used four govern equations with assuming no heat transfer process. We confirmed the mathematical model of LPRE by using the error ratio and comparing the experiment data and simulation data in steady state, and checked the stability with the linearized model. Finally, we demonstrated the simulation model as compared to the transient response of experimental data.

Since 1973, the competition on the development of fuel saving type internal combustion engines has become severe by the two times oil shock, and new type engines are reported every several months. Whenever these new type engines are developed, new designs are required and they will be offered in the market after performing the endurance test for a long time. But the engine market is faced with a heavy burden of finance, as the developing of a new engine requires tremendous expenses. For this reason, the computer simulation method has been lately developed to cope with it. The computer simulation method can be available to perform the reasonable research works by the theoretical analysis before carrying out practical experiments. With these processes, the developing expenses are cut down and the period of development is curtailed. The object of this study is the development of simulation computer program for the small naturally aspirated four-stroke diesel engine which is intended to product by the original design of our country. The process of simulation is firstly investigated for the ideal engine cycle, and secondly for the real engine cycle. In the ideal engine cycle, each step of the cycle is simulated by the energy balance according to the first law of thermodynamics, and then the engine performance is calculated. In the real cycle imulation program, the injection rate, the preparation rate and the combustion rate of fuel and the heat transfer through the wall of combustion chamber are considered. In this case, the injection rate is supposed as constant through the crank angle interval of injection and the combustion rate is calculated by the Whitehouse-Way equation and the heat transfer is calculated by the Annand's equation. The simulated values are compared with measured values of the YANMAR NS90(C) engine and Mitsubishi 4D30 engine, and the following conclusions are drawn. 1. The heat loss by the exhaust gas is well agree with each other in the lower load, but the measured value is greater than the calculated value in the higher load. The maximum error rate is about 15% in the full load. 2. The calculated quantity of heat transfer to the cooling water is greater than the measured value. The maximum error rate is about 11.8%. 3. The mean effective pressure, the fuel consumption, the power and the torque are well agree with each other. The maximum error is occurred in the fuel consumption, and its error rate is about 7%. From the above remarks, it may be concluded that the prediction of the engine performance is possibly by using the developed program, although the program needs to reform by adding the simulation of intake and exhaust process and assumping more reliable mechanical efficiency, volumetric efficiency, preparation rate and combustion rate.

A cycle simulation of 4 cycle spark ignition engine using methanol-water blend as a fuel has been developed for study of prediction of power, specific fuel consumption, mean effective pressure and thermal efficiency. One-dimensional flow model for intake process and thermodynamic model for combustion process were selected. After, performance test was made with conventional engine which was modified in consideration of fuel properties. And computational results by simulation have been compared with experimental results. As the agreement between computational and experimental results was good, prediction of engine performance by was possible.

The combustion characteristics of the D.I. diesel engine are largely dependent on the air-fuel ratio and the gas exchange process. The main factors are the shape of combustion chamber, fuel injection system, air flow inside the cylinder, intake air mass flow rate and so forth. Because these factors affect the combustion in a mutual and combined manner, it is very important to clearly understand the correlation of these factors in order to provide the combustion improvement plans. In this paper, we studied the performance and the gas exchange process of marine four-stroke engine using the engine cycle simulation. Also, we predicted briefly turbocharger engine matching.

The prediction of performance and emissions is presented for a spark ignition engine. a two zone, zero-dimensional model was employed which included thermodynamics, combustion and hear transfer, and a kinetic model employed for NOx. The model was used to analyze the processes of compression, combustion and expansion. Cylinder pressures and temperatures were calculated as a function of crankangle as well as engine performance and emissions. Predictions made with the simulation were compared with experimental data from a four cylinder spark ignition engine. Calculated pressures and, Co and Co$_{2}$ concentrations showed acceptable quantitative agreement with data. But calculated No concentrations were slightly different. A parametric study of the effect of variations in speed, combustion duration and spark timing was carried out. This simulation can be useful for design of spark ignition engines.
It has been an earnest wish for engineers to convert heat loss from engine into power, but it is almost impossible in actual application. The serious problem in engine operation without cooling is that the cylinder material is sometimes melted by exceeding melting temperature. Following the first law of thermodynamics, it is possible that heat loss to cooling water can be converted into mechanical work through crankshaft. In this study, LHR(Low Heat Rejection) engine coated with zirconia and made by quartz was introduced as one of the promising engine and several useful qualitative and quantitative data were drawn.

In this study, a cycle simulation program of a Unit-Injection(UI) system was developed to estimate the injection performance of newly designed injection system. A fundamental theory of the simulation program is based on the conservation law of mass. Loss of fuel mass in the system due to leakage, compressibility effect of the liquid fuel and friction loss in the control volume was considered in the algorithm f the program. For the evaluation of the simulation program developed, the experimental result which was offered by the Technical Research Center of Doowon Precision Industry Co. was incorporated. Two main parameters; the maximum pressure in the plunger chamber and total fuel mass(kg) injected into the engine cylinder per cycle, were measured and compared with the simulation results. It was found that the maximum error rate of the simulation result to the experimental output was less than 3% in the rated rotational speed (rpm) range of the plunger cam.
For reduction of $CO_2$ emission emitted from combustion engine, the developed nations have been focused on R&D of hybrid electric vehicle. Further more, many automobile companies are researching on various techniques related to engine used in HEV to enhance fuel economy. One of key techniques is miller cycle that control a valve timing to reduce compression stroke for saving energy and increase expansion stroke for high power. In this study, it was investigated the in-cylinder flow characteristics of miller cycle with variable intake valve timing by using the ANSYS simulation code. For simulation, the key analytic parameter defined as intake valve closing timing and cam profile. As main results, it was shown that LIVC cause a lower pressure inside cylinder and had better control turbulence intensity.
