This paper considers a two-user Gaussian interference channel with energy harvesting transmitters. Different than conventional battery powered wireless nodes, energy harvesting transmitters have to adapt transmission to availability of energy at a particular instant. In this setting, the optimal power allocation problem to maximize the sum throughput with a given deadline is formulated. The convergence of the proposed iterative coordinate descent method for the problem is proved and the short-term throughput maximizing offline power allocation policy is found. Examples for interference regions with known sum capacities are given with directional water-filling interpretations. Next, stochastic data arrivals are addressed. Finally, online and/or distributed near-optimal policies are proposed. Performance of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated through simulations.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm to optimize energy efficiency in a multi-user decoupled RF energy harvesting network and experiment on the trend of energy efficiency change assuming users' various geographical distribution scenarios. In the RF energy harvesting network where both wireless data transmission and RF energy harvesting are simultaneously performed, the energy efficiency is a key indicator of network performance, and it is necessary to investigate how various factors can affect the energy efficiency. In order to increase energy efficiency effectively, we can confirm that users' distributions are important factors in the RF energy harvesting network from the simulation results.
Recent advances in energy harvesting (EH) technology have motivated the adoption of rechargeable mobile devices for communications. In this paper, we consider a point-to-point (P2P) wireless communication system in which an EH transmitter with a non-ideal rechargeable battery is required to send a given fixed number of bits to the receiver before they expire according to a preset delay constraint. Due to the possible energy loss in the storage process, the harvest-use-and-store (HUS) architecture is adopted. We characterize the properties of the optimal solutions, for additive white Gaussian channels (AWGNs) and then block-fading channels, that maximize the energy efficiency (i.e., battery residual) subject to a given rate requirement. Interestingly, it is shown that the optimal solution has a water-filling interpretation with double thresholds and that both thresholds are monotonic. Based on this, we investigate the optimal double-threshold based allocation policy and devise an algorithm to achieve the solution. Numerical results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis and to compare the optimal solutions with existing schemes.
Energy harvesting devices have been proposed for sensor networking applications where batteries cannot be replaced, and cooperative communication schemes have been used to increase energy efficiency for wireless systems. Here, we develop transmission scheduling schemes for multi-terminal cooperative energy harvesting networks that maximize the packet delivery ratio, i.e., the probability that an event is reported successfully. We see that the proposed scheme provides virtually the same performance as the state-of-the-art threshold-based scheme, but does not require auxiliary parameter optimization. The proposed scheme also permits extensions to multiple cooperating nodes and sources, and it can be modified to accommodate fairness constraints.
Energy harvesting has emerged as a powerful technology for complementing current battery-powered communication systems in order to extend their lifetime. In this paper a general framework is introduced for the optimization of communication systems in which the transmitter is able to harvest energy from its environment. Assuming that the energy arrival process is known non-causally at the transmitter, the structure of the optimal transmission scheme, which maximizes the amount of transmitted data by a given deadline, is identified. Our framework includes models with continuous energy arrival as well as battery constraints. A battery that suffers from energy leakage is studied further, and the optimal transmission scheme is characterized for a constant leakage rate.
In this paper, we investigate the optimal packet scheduling problem in a two-user multiple access communication system, where the transmitters are able to harvest energy from the nature. Under a deterministic system setting, we assume that the energy harvesting times and harvested energy amounts are known before the transmission starts. For the packet arrivals, we assume that packets have already arrived and are ready to be transmitted at the transmitter before the transmission starts. Our goal is to minimize the time by which all packets from both users are delivered to the destination through controlling the transmission powers and transmission rates of both users. We first develop a generalized iterative backward waterfilling algorithm to characterize the maximum departure region of the transmitters for any given deadline T. Then, based on the sequence of maximum departure regions at energy arrival instants, we decompose the transmission completion time minimization problem into convex optimization problems and solve the overall problem efficiently.

This paper proposed a novel user's information feedback algorithm for improving network energy harvesting rate. The proposed algorithm is focused on determining energy harvesting users comparing increasing ratio of the amount of harvesting energy versus emitted energy and network threshold ${\alpha}$, which is critical harvesting parameter. Using this method, we can increase the rate of network energy harvesting preventing emitted energy from wasting inefficiently. The result of experiment in this paper shows that user's information feedback algorithm makes network energy harvesting rate more efficiently when it uses threshold ${\alpha}=15%$ to determine energy harvesting users.

This paper investigated the method for the output of power management IC (PMIC) for BLE beacon with energy harvesting device to be maintained constantly. The capacitor was used to store the energy supplied from energy harvesting device such as solar module and the capacitance was estimated to the optimum value according to the interval for the BLE beacon to send advertising signal.
As energy harvesting communication systems emerge, there is a need for transmission schemes that dynamically adapt to the energy harvesting process. In this paper, after exhibiting a finite-horizon online throughput-maximizing scheduling problem formulation and the structure of its optimal solution within a dynamic programming formulation, a low complexity online scheduling policy is proposed. The policy exploits the existence of thresholds for choosing rate and power levels as a function of stored energy, harvest state and time until the end of the horizon. The policy, which is based on computing an expected threshold, performs close to optimal on a wide range of example energy harvest patterns. Moreover, it achieves higher throughput values for a given delay, than throughput-optimal online policies developed based on infinite-horizon formulations in recent literature. The solution is extended to include ergodic time-varying (fading) channels, and a corresponding low complexity policy is proposed and evaluated for this case as well.
Powering wireless sensors with energy harvested from the environment is coming of age due to the increasing power densities of both storage and harvesting devices and the electronics performing energy efficient energy conversion. In order to maximize the functionality of the wireless sensor network, minimize missing packets, minimize latency and prevent the waste of energy, problems like congestion and inefficient energy usage must be addressed. Many sleep-awake protocols and efficient message priority techniques have been developed to properly manage the energy of the nodes and to minimize congestion. For a WSN that is operating in a strictly energy constrained environment, an energy-efficient transmission strategy is necessary. In this paper, we present a novel transmission priority decision scheme for a heterogeneous body sensor network composed of normal nodes and an energy harvesting node that acts as a cluster head. The energy harvesting node's decision whether or not to clear a normal node for sending is based on a set of metrics which includes the energy harvesting node's remaining energy, the total harvested energy, the type of message in a normal node's queue and finally, the implementation context of the wireless sensor network.
