This study examined apartment residents' energy-lifestyle, and their energy consumption patterns by energy-lifestyle. The major findings are as follow: 1)In order to identify energy lifestyle, three dimensions - value of life, energy consuming behavior and energy awareness - were defined by literature reviews, and each dimension was tested to define components. 2)The scores of the 14 factors that were defined by factor analysis on the three dimensions of the energy lifestyle were subject to cluster analysis, and then lifestyle was categorized into five groups. G1 is very negative, and indifferent to energy waste or saving at home. G2 is passively carrying out energy saving activities at home, only within their comfort. G3 is aware of energy saving, and more actively keeping energy saving behavior in their everyday lives, while they also show energy waste behavior at the same time. G4 is particularly indifferent to energy costs, and presenting energy squandering behaviors. G5 is better aware of energy saving than other groups, and carrying out energy saving behaviors in their everyday lives. This study would be of help to establish energy saving management and education plans in apartments.

In ad hoc network, the scarce energy management of the mobile devices has become a critical issue in order to extend the network lifetime. Current research activity for the Minimum Energy Multicast (MEM) problem has been focused on devising efficient centralized greedy algorithms for static ad hoc networks. In this paper, we consider mobile ad hoc networks(MANETs) that could provide the reliable monitoring and control of a variety of environments for remote place. Mobility of MANET would require the topology change frequently compared with a static network. To improve the routing protocol in MANET, energy efficient routing protocol would be required as well as considering the mobility would be needed. In this paper, we propose a new method, the CACH(Context-aware Clustering Hierarchy) algorithm, a hybrid and clustering-based protocol that could analyze the link cost from a source node to a destination node. The proposed analysis could help in defining the optimum depth of hierarchy architecture CACH utilize. The proposed CACH could use localized condition to enable adaptation and robustness for dynamic network topology protocol and this provide that our hierarchy to be resilient. As a result, our simulation results would show that CACH could find energy efficient depth of hierarchy of a cluster.

In this paper, we propose an energy-aware source routing protocol for maximizing a network lifetime in mobile ad hoc network environments. The proposed routing protocol is based on the source routing and chooses a path that maximize the path lifetime, by considering both transmit/receive power consumption and residual battery power in the mobile nodes from the perspective of source-destination end-to-end. This paper proposes a new routing cost and designs a new routing protocol for minimizing the control packet overhead occurred during the route discovery. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has similar performances to the conventional routing schemes in terms of the number of transmission hops, transmission rate and total energy consumption, but achieves the performance improvement of 20 percent with respect to the lifetime.

In wireless sensor networks, a number of nodes deployed in dense manner should be self-configured to establish a topology that provides communication and sensing coverage under stringent energy constraints. To establish an efficient topology, we propose the TRaffic-Aware Topology control (TRAT) algorithm that reduces energy dissipation by considering total amount of data flows in the network. Our algorithm controls the number of active nodes with traffic information and adjusts nodal transmission power by estimating amount of data flows. According to the result, the proposed algorithm shows about 30% better performance than the other methods in terms of energy efficiency.

Video streaming applications such as Netflix and Youtube are widely used in our daily life. A DASH based streaming client exploits adaptive bit rate (ABR) method to choose the most appropriate video source representation that the network can support. In this paper we propose a novel energy-aware ABR scheme that adds the ability to monitor energy efficiency in addition to the linear quadratic regulator algorithm we previously introduced. Our trace-driven simulation studies show that our proposed scheme mitigates and shortens re-buffering, resulting in energy savings of mobile devices while preserving the similar QoE compared to the state-of-the-art ABR algorithms.

In this paper, we present a QoS-aware MAC protocol (QA-MAC) for cluster based wireless sensor networks (WSNs). QA-MAC is a TDMA-based scheduling protocol that minimizes the energy consumption in multi-hop WSNs and provides Quality of Service (QoS). A dynamic scheduling algorithm according to the number of member nodes, node traffics, and traffic priorities is suggested. The selected cluster head allocates time slots for all member nodes in the first TDMA schedule period of each round. During the second schedule period in each round, the cluster head makes a schedule for all data transmission. The proposed QA-MAC (QoS-Aware MAC) could save energy, reduce transmission delay, and support QoS.

Untethered nodes in mobile ad-hoc networks strongly depend on the efficient use of their batteries. In this paper, we propose a new metric, the drain rate, to forecast the lifetime of nodes according to current traffic conditions. This metric is combined with the value of the remaining battery capacity to determine which nodes can be part of an active route. We describe new route selection mechanisms for MANET routing protocols, which we call the Minimum Drain Rate (MDR) and the Conditional Minimum Drain Rate (CMDR). MDR extends nodal battery life and the duration of paths, while CMDR also minimizes the total transmission power consumed per packet. Using the ns-2 simulator and the dynamic source routing (DSR) protocol, we compare MDR and CMDR against prior proposals for power-aware routing and show that using the drain rate for power-aware route selection offers superior performance results.

Interference-aware routing protocol design for underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) is one of the key strategies in reducing packet loss in the highly hostile underwater environment. The reduced interference causes efficient utilization of the limited battery power of the sensor nodes that, in consequence, prolongs the entire network lifetime. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient interference-aware routing (EEIAR) protocol for UWSNs. A sender node selects the best relay node in its neighborhood with the lowest depth and the least number of neighbors. Combination of the two routing metrics ensures that data packets are forwarded along the least interference paths to reach the final destination. The proposed work is unique in that it does not require the full dimensional localization information of sensor nodes and the network total depth is segmented to identify source, relay and neighbor nodes. Simulation results reveal better performance of the scheme than the counterparts DBR and EEDBR techniques in terms of energy efficiency, packet delivery ratio and end-to-end delay.

As multiprocessors have been widely adopted in embedded systems, task computation energy consumption should be minimized with several low power techniques supported by the multiprocessors. This paper proposes an energy-aware task scheduling algorithm that adopts both dynamic voltage scaling and power shutdown in multiprocessor environments. Considering the timing and energy overhead of power shutdown, the proposed algorithm performs an iterative task assignment and task ordering for multiprocessor systems. In this case, the iterative priority-based task scheduling is adopted to obtain the best solution with the minimized total energy consumption. Total energy consumption is calculated by considering a linear programming model and threshold time of power shutdown. By analyzing experimental results for standard task graphs based on real applications, the resource and timing limitations were analyzed to maximize energy savings. Considering the experimental results, the proposed energy-aware task scheduling provided meaningful performance enhancements over the existing priority-based task scheduling approaches.
