Solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) attracts much attention because of its high energy efficiency among many water-electrolysis technologies. SOEC operates at temperatures above 700℃, so that the water required for water-electrolysis must be supplied in the form of steam. When the steam to be supplied to the SOEC is generated by the SOEC system itself, an enormous amount of latent heat is required to vaporize the water, so additional energy must be supplied to the SOEC system. On the other hand, if the steam can be supplied from the outside, a small amount of energy is required to raise the temperature of the low temperature steam, so that the SOEC system can be operated without additional energy supply from outside, which enables efficient water-electrolysis. In this study, we figure out the size of heat exchanger for various steam temperature and effectiveness of heat exchanger, and propose the energy efficiency of the system.
Heating energy was measured in an apartment housing unit with a district heating system, varying the kind of hot water distributors. Ondol coils passing through a living room raised the temperature of the room where the heating was turned off. Including this characteristic of Ondol heating into the modeling, we performed simulations and showed a verification by comparison with the results of measurements. As a result, a main flow control method, which changes hot water flow rate supplied to a housing unit according to the thermal load, can reduce the supplied flow rate and lower the return temperature, compared with a constant flow method. That can result in decreased heat loss in utility-pipe conduits even though the heating energy supplied is almost the same. An outdoor reset control that raises the temperature of the supplied hot water if the outdoor temperature falls has the effect of a quicker response in heating than the reduced flow rate and return temperature.
Due to environmental regulation and technical improvements, renewable energy sources (RES) are increasingly penetrated and operated in power systems. Clean energy technologies have become cost-competitive with conventional power systems, and in the near future, the generation cost of RES is expected to approach grid parity. In this situation, it should be considered an extraordinarily important issue to be maximized resulting in utilization of RES as well as to develop technologies for efficiency improvement of RES. Therefore, in this paper, the method for determining an optimal installed capacity and interconnected location of RES is proposed in order to minimize the cost of energy not supplied, which can contribute to improve distribution reliability.

As the power industry moves towards open competition, there has been a need for methodology to evaluate distribution power system reliability by using customer interruption costs, particularly in power supply zones under the competitive electricity market. This paper presents an algorithm to evaluate system average interruption duration index, expected energy not supplied, and system outage cost taking into consideration failure rate of the distribution facility and industrial customer interruption cost. Also, to apply this algorithm to evaluate system outage cost presented in this paper, the distribution arrangement of a dual supply system consisting of mostly high voltage customers in an industrial complex in Korea is used as a sample case study. Finally, evaluation results of system interruption cost, system average interruption duration index, and expected energy not supplied in the sample industrial complex area are shown in detail.
In this study, evaporation of LN2 non-spreading pool on concrete plate was dealt with experimentally. The thermophysical properties of concrete, which is a composite material, were obtained by minimizing the difference between the numerical analysis results obtained from the assumed properties and the results from experiments. The thermal energy required for evaporation of the liquid pool is supplied from the concrete plate and the wall of the container. As a result of the measurement, the thermal energy flowing in from the wall was negligible compared to the one supplied from the concrete plate. It was found that the measured evaporation rate of the liquid pool by the heat energy supplied through the concrete plate agrees well with the PTC model except for the initial section of the experiment. The validity of the semi-infinite assumption and the one-dimensional assumption, which are the main conditions of the PTC model, was also verified through experiments. The evaporation rate model in the non-spreading pool discussed in this study can provide a basic frame for the one in the spreading pool, which is a meaningful result considering that the spreading pool is very realistic compared to the non-spreading pool.
This paper presents an energy saving hydrostatic pressure exchanger for sea water desalination equipment. In a reverse osmosis(RO) system for desalinating sea water, more than 70 percent of the supplied sea water, brines which were impassable through RO membrane are bypassed, resulting in high energy losses. In this paper, a hydrostatic pressure exchanger consisting of an embedded water hydraulic piston motor and a water hydraulic piston pump was proposed and investigated in order to recover the energy of the bypassed brines. The pressurized brines are supplied to the embedded water hydraulic piston motor as power sources and the water hydraulic piston pump is driven by the output torque of the embedded water hydraulic piston motor as well as electric motor. Consequently, the energy of the bypassed brines can be recovered. To examine the electric energy saving characteristics of the hydrostatic pressure exchanger, a simulation model was constructed using commercial software and experiments were conducted. Through the results of simulation and experiment, the feasibility of the electric energy saving effect of the proposed hydrostatic pressure exchanger was investigated.
As 'Low Carbon Green Building' is highly required, programs to evaluate building performance are actively and commonly used. For most of these programs, dynamic responses of buildings against external weather changes are very important. In order to simulate the programs, weather data of each region must be properly entered to estimate accurate amount of building energy consumption. To this end, the existing weather data and weather data of KSES were compared and analyzed to find out how weather changes. Energy load of Korea's standard houses was also analyzed based on this data. As a result, data corresponding to June ${\sim}$ September when cooling is supplied shows 23% of average increase with 30% of peak increase(June). On the other hand, data corresponding to November ${\sim}$ February when heating is supplied shows 29% of average decrease with 34% of peak decrease(November). Increase in cooling load and decrease in heating load in the above data comparison/analysis show that KSES 2009 data reflects increase in average temperature caused by global warming unlike the existing data. Increase in dry-bulb temperature depending on weather change of standard houses increases cooling load by 17% and decreases heating load by 36%
Energy Storage System(ESS) is installed at feeding line of railway substation. ESS will absorb regenerative energy when train braking and also charge electric energy when feeding line is no load condition. Absorbed and charged energy will be supplied when train is accelerating condition. Due to ESS the energy variation will be minimized and this effect is estimated.
Vertical open display cases are widely used in shopping malls, supermarkets, or retail stores to sell frozen and refrigerated products. Open display cases use air curtains to maintain a reasonable temperature within the storage space, prevent insects from breaking in, and reduce energy usage. In this research, computational fluid dynamics was used to find the optimal condition for reducing energy by considering various conditions such as discharge speed or temperature of air curtains. Results of the study showed that the amount of energy consumed in the display cabinet is influenced by the discharge speed and temperature of the slots installed on the upper area and the amount of air supplied to the storage area inside the shelf. This shows that the amount of discharged air supplied from the storage area influences the formation of air curtain and also the amount of energy consumption. As a result of this study, we learned that the amount of energy used can be reduced by increasing the amount of discharged air within the storage area and enhancing back pressure.
