고속철도 변전소 피크부하 저감용 ESS 용량 산정 및 경제성 분석 (Sizing and Economic Analysis of Battery Energy Storage System for Peak Shaving of High-Speed Railway Substations)

  • The paper proposed a sizing method of an energy storage system(ESS) for peak shaving of high-speed railway substations based on load profile patterns of substations. A lithium based battery ESS was selected since it can produce high-power at high speed that peak shaving requires, and also takes up a relatively smaller space for installation. Adequate size of the ESS, minimum capacity which can technically meet a peak shaving target, was determined by collectively considering load patterns of a target substation, characteristics of the ESS to be installed, and optimal scheduling of the ESS. In case study, a local substation was considered to demonstrate the proposed sizing method. Also economic analysis with the determined size of ESS was performed to calculate electricity cost savings of the peak shaving ESS, and to offer pay-back period and return on investment.

  • As the application of multirotor grows, the demands for multirotor that can fly longer and load more are increasing. Hydrogen has a high energy density, so it can satisfy these demands when used in multirotor. In order to design hydrogen fueled multirotor that satisfies the desired flight time and payload, it is important to calculate the specifications of a fuel cell, battery, and hydrogen storage system. This paper contains detailed information on various energy systems used in multirotor and fuel cell powered multirotor research trends. This study proposed a sizing calculation method that meets the target flight time and payload using thrust and power equations. It has been explained how the two equations derive the particular specifications. The specifications of the multirotor were derived by assuming a payload of 50 kg and a flight time of 1 hour. In addition, the effects of the values of the fuel cell, hydrogen storage system, and motor propeller were analyzed.

Lithium-ion Stationary Battery Capacity Sizing Formula for the Establishment of Industrial Design Standard

  • The extension of DC battery backup time in the DC power supply system of nuclear power plants (NPPs) remains a challenge. The lead-acid battery is the most popular at present. And it is generally the most popular energy storage device. However, extension of backup time requires too much space. The lithium-ion battery has high energy density and advanced gravimetric and volumetric properties. The aim of this paper is development of the sizing formula of stationary lithium-ion batteries. The ongoing research activities and related industrial standards for stationary lithium-ion batteries are reviewed. Then, the lithium-ion battery sizing calculation formular is proposed for the establishment of industrial design standard which is essential for the design of stationary batteries of nuclear power plants. An example of calculating the lithium-ion battery capacity for a medium voltage UPS is presented.

A Comprehensive Model for Wind Power Forecast Error and its Application in Economic Analysis of Energy Storage Systems

  • The unavoidable forecast error of wind power is one of the biggest obstacles for wind farms to participate in day-ahead electricity market. To mitigate the deviation from forecast, installation of energy storage system (ESS) is considered. An accurate model of wind power forecast error is fundamental for ESS sizing. However, previous study shows that the error distribution has variable kurtosis and fat tails, and insufficient measurement data of wind farms would add to the difficulty of modeling. This paper presents a comprehensive way that makes the use of mixed skewness model (MSM) and copula theory to give a better approximation for the distribution of forecast error, and it remains valid even if the dataset is not so well documented. The model is then used to optimize the ESS power and capacity aiming to pay the minimal extra cost. Results show the effectiveness of the new model for finding the optimal size of ESS and increasing the economic benefit.

독립형 태양광 발전 시스템의 무정전 전력공급을 위한 시스템 용량 최적 선정에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Optimal System Sizing of the Standalone Photovoltaic Power Generation System for Uninterruptible Power Supply)

  • Renewable energy has been increasingly used and widely acclaimed as one of the solutions to rampant environmental problems. Among numerous kinds of renewable sources, the penetration rate of the PV system is relatively higher than that of others due to ease of installation. However, one disadvantage of the PV system is its dependence on weather condition. The PV system is especially critical when it is used for standalone systems because it cannot operate when the power generated from a PV module is not enough. Therefore, PV systems are often used with an energy storage system, such as batteries, to store backup energy when the weather condition is insufficient to supply power to the system. Blackout time can be reduced by increasing the size of the energy storage system, but it is a trade-off with system cost. In this work, optimal sizing of a standalone PV system is proposed to supply power to the system without blackout. The sizing of PV modules and batteries is performed by a simulation based on actual irradiation data collected during the past five years. The Life cycle costing of each system is evaluated to determine an optimal set of PV modules and batteries among several different combinations. The standalone PV system designed by the proposed method can supply power to the system with no interruption as long as the weather condition is similar to those of the past five years.

  • 순수 전기에너지로 움직이는 전기자동차는 저장에너지 시공간의 한계로 인하여 회생제동은 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 전기자동차의 시스템 설계의 중요한 부분인 축전지 용량 크기와 수명에 영향을 미칠수 있는 회생 제동에 의한 에너지 효율 및 회생제동 순간 에너지 저장을 위한 울트라 캐패시터의 사이징에 대한 상관관계를 분석하여 효율적인 전기 자동차의 시스템 설계에 활용하고자 한다. 미국의 도심주행 코스를 대상으로 시뮬레이션을 수행하여 축전지 사이징과 회생제동의 효율, 울트라 캐패시터의 사이징에 대한 효율 관계를 제시하였다.

  • 태양광 추진 항공기는 감시, 지구 모니터링, 통신 등에 대기 오염 없이 그리고 가까운 장래에 인공위성과의 가격 경쟁력까지 갖추게 될 수 있어 미래의 고고도 장기체공 임무수행을 위해 더욱더 그 중요성이 증대되고 있다. 그러나 전통적인 항공기 사이징 방법들은 태양광 추진 항공기에 바로 적용될 수 없다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 동력 시스템 구성품들이 태양광 추진 장기 체공 항공기의 사이징에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 파악하기 위하여 에너지 균형 및 구속조건 연구를 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 동력 생성과 연료전지의 재생 에너지 저장을 위한 광전지 모듈을 동력 시스템 구성품으로 고려하였다. 또한 본 연구 결과를 검증하기 위해 고고도 무인기에 이 새로운 사이징 기법을 적용하여 결과를 제시하였다.

Prototype Microgrid의 동특성 모의에 관한 연구 (A Study on Simulation of Dynamic Characteristics in Prototype Microgrid)

  • Microgrid is generally defined as cluster of small distributed generators, energy storages and loads. Through monitoring and coordinated control, microgrid can provide various benefits such as reduction of energy cost, peak shaving and power quality improvement. In design stage of microgrid, system dynamic simulation is necessary for optimizing of sizing and siting of DER(distributed energy resources). As number of the system components increases, simulation time will be longer. This problem can restrict optimal design. So we used simplified modeling on energy sources and average switching model on power converters to reduce simulation time. The effectiveness of this method is verified by applying to prototype microgrid system, which is consist of photovoltaic, wind power, diesel engine generators, battery energy storage system and loads installed in laboratory. Simulation by Matlab/Simulink and measurements on prototype microgrid show that the proposed method can reduce simulation time not sacrificing dynamic characteristics.

  • As the reduction of greenhouse gases(GHGs) emission has become a global issue, the microgrid markets are growing rapidly. With the sudden changes in the market, Korean government suggested a new business model called 'Self-Sufficient Energy Islands'. Its main concern is a stand-alone microgrid composed of Distributed Energy Resources(DERs) such as Renewable Energy Sources(RESs), Energy Storage System(ESS) and Fuel Cell, in order to minimize the emission of GHGs. According to these trend, this paper is written to propose an optimal sizing method of DERs in a stand-alone microgrid by using Genetic Algorithm(GA), one of the representative stochastic methods. It is to minimize the net present cost with the variables, size of RESs and ESS. In the process for optimization, the sunless days are considered as additional constraints. Through the case study analysis, the size of DERs installed in a microgrid system has been computed using the proposed method in MATLAB. And the result of MATLAB is compared with that of HOMER(Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources), a well-known energy modeling software.

TRNOPT를 이용한 수직 지중열교환기 길이 산정 방법에 관한 연구 (Sizing of Vertical Borehole Heat Exchangers using TRNOPT)

  • Ground-coupled heat pump systems have been widely used, as they are regarded as a renewable energy source and ensure a high annual efficiency. Among the system components, borehole heat exchangers (BHE) play an important role in decreasing the entering water temperature (EWT) to heat pumps in the cooling season, and consequently improve the COP. The optimal sizing of the BHEs is crucial for a successful project. Other than the existing sizing methods, a simulation-based design tool is more applicable for modern complex geothermal systems, and it may also be useful since design and engineering works operate on the same platform. A simulation-based sizing method is proposed in this study using the well-known Duct STorage (DST) model in Trnsys. TRNOPT, the Trnsys optimization tool, is used to search for an optimal value of the length of BHEs under given ground loads and ground properties. The result shows that a maximum EWT of BHEs during a design period (10 years) successfully approaches the design EWT while providing an optimal BHE length. Compared to the existing design tool, very similar lengths are calculated by both methods with a small error of 1.07%.
