  • As the development of alternative energy is required due to the depletion of fossil fuels, interest in the use of hydrogen energy is increasing. Hydrogen is a promising clean energy source with high energy density and can lead to the application of environmentally friendly technologies. However, due to difficulties in production, storage, and transportation that prevent the application of hydrogen-based eco-friendly technology, research on reforming reactions using dimethyl ether (DME) is being conducted. Unlike other hydrocarbons, DME is attracting attention as a hydrogen carrier because it has excellent storage stability and transportability, and there is no C-C bond in the molecule. The reaction between DME and steam is one of the reforming processes with the highest hydrogen yield in theory at a temperature lower than that of other hydrocarbons. In this study, a hydrogen reforming device using DME was developed and a catalyst prepared by supporting Cu in alumina was put into a reactor to find optimal hydrogen production conditions for supplying hydrogen to fuel cells while changing reaction temperature (300-500℃), pressure (5-10 bar), and steam/carbon ratio (3:1 to 5:1).

  • To find out rational design and synthetic strategies toward efficient hydrogen storage materials, molecular modeling and quantum mechanical studies have been carried out on the MOFs(Metal-Organic Frameworks) having various organic linkers and nanocube frameworks. The calculation results about the free volume ratio, surface area, and electron density variation of the frameworks indicated that the capacity of the hydrogen storage of MOFs was largely dependent on the specific surface area and electron localization around benzene ring rather than the free volume of MOFs. The prediction of the modeling study could be supported by the hydrogen adsorption experiments using IRMOF-1 and -3, which showed more enhanced hydrogen storage capacities of IRMOF-3 compared with the IRMOF-1's at both experimental conditions, 77K, ∠ $H_2$ 1 atm and ambient temperature, ∠ $H_2$ 35 atm.

  • In this study, which focuses on ice storage, a fundamental study in cooling and solidification was performed, including the interesting phenomena of density inversion, supercooling and dendritic ice. A numerical study was performed for natural convection and ice formation considering existence of subcooling and dendritic ice were analyzed numerically by using finite difference method and boundary fixing method. In the mesh, the solid fraction was introduced with adding as a term to the energy conservation equation. A flow in the dendrite was modelled as a flow in a porous medium, and the momentum conservation equation was modified to incorporate resistance forces involved in flows through porous media. A numerical solution of the time dependencies of dendrite area and dense ice front was successfully obtained, and the numerical results were good agreement with experimental results. Based on this methodology, a discussion was made of phenomena and characteristics of cooling and freezing processes under various conditions.

  • To find out the optimum design of hydrogen storage and supply tank using Metal Hydride (briefly MH) and to make clear the performance characteristics under various conditions are our research purpose. In order to use the low-temperature exhaust heat, $LaNi_{4.7}Al_{0.3}$ which operates under the low pressure of 1 MPa is chosen, and we measure the basic properties, namely density, specific heat, PCT(Pressure-Concentration-Temperature) characteristics, and effective thermal conductivity. Then, a numerical calculation model of hydrogen storage using MH alloy is suggested and this thermal diffusion equation of model is solved by the backward difference method. This calculation results are compared with the experimental results of the systems which installed 1kg MH alloy and, it is found out that our calculation model can well predict the experimental results. By the experimental using MH alloy, it is recognized that the hydrogen flow rate can control by the step adjustment of brine temperature.

  • Magnesium and its alloys have the high potential as hydrogen storage materials because of their highest hydrogen storage capacity, low density and abundant resources. But poor kinetic properties of hydriding and dehydriding and high working temperature have limited their practical applications. In this study, the Mg-Ni binary alloys with different amount of Ni were produced by gravity casting and characterized in order to investigate the relationship between the microstructures and hydriding properties. The maximum hydrogen absorption capacity decreased, but the absorption kinetics increased with Ni content. The difference in the absorption kinetics was resulted from the differences in the sort and shape of primary solid phases and eutectic microstructure.

  • The hydriding and dehydriding properties of a Mg-10wt.%Ni mixture, mechanically-alloyed in order to improve the hydriding and dehydriding kinetics of pure Mg, were investigated. The $Mg_2Ni$ phase develops along with hydriding-dehydriding cycling. The principal effects of mechanical alloying in a planetary mill and hydriding-dehydriding cycling are considered to be the augmentation in the density of defects and the enlargement in the specific surface area. The mechanically-alloyed Mg-10wt.%Ni mixture is activated easily. It has much higher hydriding rate and hydrogen-storage capacity and relatively high dehydriding rate as compared with the pure Mg, the Mg-10wt.%Ni alloy, the Mg-25wt.%Ni alloy and the $Mg_2Ni$ alloy.

  • The Lorentz force distribution of a high $T_c$ superconducting tape with increasing transport currents in magnetic field ($H_a$) was visualized. The external magnetic field was applied normally to the coated conductor tape surface after zero-field cooling, and the transport current ($I_a$) was increased stepwise from 0 to 90 % of the values of the critical current ($I_c$ ($H_a$)) at applied filed, Ha. The field distribution (H(x)) near the sample surface across the tape width (2w) was measured using the scanning Hall probe method. Applying an inversion to the measured field distribution, we obtained the underlying current distribution (J(x)), from which the magnetic induction, B(x) was calculated with Biot-Savart law. Then Lorentz force per unit length was calculated using F(x)=J(x)${\times}$B(x), which appears to be very inhomogeneous along the tape width due to the complicated distributions of J(x) and B(x).

  • Because Li-ion battery and Li-Polymer battery have high-energy storage density, they are used for various electronic devices such as electronic cigarette, electronic bicycle, drone, second battery, even golf cart and electronic car. Recently, however, battery explosion is sometimes occurring on electronic devices using Li-ion battery and is becoming serious as bodily harm is breaking out due to explosion. For this, this paper described the Li-ion Battery's operating principles and verified the cause of explosion by overload tests caused by the high-energy storage density. According to the these experiments, we conducted a study to develope scanning techniques of fire and safety measures.

  • Series hybrid electric vehicles (SHEVs) having multiple power sources such as an engine- generator (EnGen), a battery, and an ultra-capacitor require a power control unit with high power density and reliable control operation. However, manufacturing using separate individual power converters has the disadvantage of low power density and requires a large number of power and signal cable wires. It is also difficult to implement the optimal power distribution and fault management algorithm because of the communication delay between the units. In order to address these concerns, this approach presents a design methodology and a power control algorithm of an integrated power converter for the SHEVs powered by multiple power sources. In this work, the design methodology of the integrated power control unit (IPCU) is firstly elaborately described, and then efficient and reliable power distribution algorithms are proposed. The design works are verified with product-level and vehicle-level performance experiments on a 10-ton SHEV.
