Wireless sensor networks encounter energy saving as a major issue as the sensor nodes having no rechargeable batteries and also the resources are limited. Clustering of sensors play a pivotal role in energy saving of the deployed sensor nodes. However, in the cluster based wireless sensor network, the cluster heads tend to consume more energy for additional functions such as reception of data, aggregation and transmission of the received data to the base station. So, careful selection of cluster head and formation of cluster plays vital role in energy conservation and enhancement of lifetime of the wireless sensor networks. This study proposes a new mutation chemical reaction optimization (MCRO) which is an algorithm based energy efficient clustering protocol termed as MCRO-ECP, for wireless sensor networks. The proposed protocol is extensively developed with effective methods such as potential energy function and molecular structure encoding for cluster head selection and cluster formation. While developing potential functions for energy conservation, the following parameters are taken into account: neighbor node distance, base station distance, ratio of energy, intra-cluster distance, and CH node degree to make the MCRO-ECP protocol to be potential energy conserver. The proposed protocol is studied extensively and tested elaborately on NS2.35 Simulator under various senarios like varying the number of sensor nodes and CHs. A comparative study between the simulation results derived from the proposed MCRO-ECP protocol and the results of the already existing protocol, shows that MCRO-ECP protocol produces significantly better results in energy conservation, increase network life time, packets received by the BS and the convergence rate.
It is essential to introduce EERS (Energy Efficiency Resource Standards) according to the trend of the era in which energy saving is emphasized, and it is time to settle down in a stable manner. Electric motors and lighting devices, which account for more than 60% of the nation's electricity use, are the most effective items of the EERS. And accurate methods of calculating savings must be preceded. In this study, the operation rate and load rate are measured through the demonstration of energy use at 400 businesses and the measured rates are used for EERS savings calculation. The results imply that the proposed method can be successfully applied to calculate cost-effective and reliable energy savings.

The use of groundwater and ground_heat is one of the ways to use natural and renewable energy, and it has been considered as a technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy-saving. There are a few researches on the optimum design for the open-loop geothermal system. In this study, to develop the optimal design method numerical simulation of the open-loop geothermal system with two-wells was performed by a groundwater and heat transfer model. In this paper, a study was performed to analyze the system performance according to well distance and pumping flow rate. In the result, average heat exchange rate and heat source temperature were calculated and it was found that they were dependent on the pumping rate.

considerate operation is a major issue in the equipment-intensive operation. Identifying an optimal equipment combination is important to achieve low-energy operations. An Earthwork operation planning system, which measures the energy consumption of construction operations by taking into account construction equipments' engineering attributes (e.g., weight, capacity, energy consumption rate, etc.) and operation conditions (e.g., road condition, attributes of materials to be moved, geometric information, etc.), is essential to achieve the low-energy consumption. This study develops an automated computerized system which identifies an optimal earthmoving equipment fleet minimizing the energy consumption. The system imports a standard template of earthmoving operation model and compares numerous scenarios using alternative equipment allocation plans. It finds the fleet that minimizes the energy consumption by enumerating all cases using sensitivity analysis. A case study is presented to verify the validity of the system.

Wireless sensor network combines sensing and computing technology which can sense light, temperature, vibration, magnetic field and wind etc, as each purpose of using those. Wireless nodes operate signal processing skill which has proceeded sensed information from the sensor, transmission which makes information reached to observer and limited energy managing skill which is needed on account of using battery to operate wireless. To make responsible measuring and sensing out of them, efficient energy management is so important to maintain life time of network. In this paper, after explaining CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance) traditional wireless MAC protocol, and ER-MAC(Energy Rate Medium Access Control) which are not managing resource of hardware but MAN(Medium Access Control), data-link layer out of OSI 7 layer. We would like to analyze those efficiency of power saving comparing with each protocol.

In the server cluster environment, one of the ways saving energy is to control server's power according to traffic conditions. This is to determine the ON/OFF state of servers according to energy usage of data center and each server. To do this, we need a way to estimate each server's energy. In this paper, we use a software-based power consumption estimation model because it is more efficient than the hardware model using power meter in terms of energy and cost. The traditional software-based power consumption estimation model has a drawback in that it doesn't know well the computing status of servers because it uses only the idle status field of CPU. Therefore it doesn't estimate consumption power effectively. In this paper, we present a CPU field based power consumption estimation model to estimate more accurate than the two traditional models (CPU/Disk/Memory utilization based power consumption estimation model and CPU idle utilization based power consumption estimation model) by using the various status fields of CPU to get the CPU status of servers and the overall status of system. We performed experiments using 2 PCs and compared the power consumption estimated by the power consumption model (software) with that measured by the power meter (hardware). The experimental results show that the traditional model has about 8-15% average error rate but our proposed model has about 2% average error rate.
The aim of this study is to evaluate current policies and suggest the way of overcome financial impediments to the energy efficiency function of residential buildings. Based on this analysis the paper enumerates policy recommendations for enhancing how energy efficiency is addressed in building codes and other policies for residential buildings. For achieving this goal, this study conducts the cost-benefit analysis to measure total energy savings and associated total cost. The results of study shows that the cost is greater than the benefit from 1st to 4th year but the benefit will be greater than the cost for the rest of the year. In addition, this study designs a financial support method and an implementation mechanism. Investment from the capital market will take place with the government's interest subsidy. Home retrofit will be undertaken with low interest rate with 2.5% and the return will be paid by a monthly energy bill. The results of this study provides some useful insights for the policy design, including the importance of developing information tools for providing appropriate information to households.
We present an approximate DRAM architecture for energy-efficient deep learning. Our key premise is that by bounding memory errors to non-critical information, we can significantly reduce DRAM refresh energy without compromising recognition accuracy of deep neural networks. To validate the key premise, we make extensive Monte-Carlo simulations for several well-known convolutional neural networks such as LeNet, ConvNet and AlexNet with the input of MINIST, CIFAR-10, and ImageNet, respectively. We assume that the highest-order 8-bits (in single precision) and 4-bits (in half precision) are protected from retention errors under the proposed architecture and then, randomly inject bit-errors to unprotected bits with various bit-error-rates. Here, recognition accuracies of the above convolutional neural networks are successfully maintained up to the 10-5-order bit-error-rate. We simulate DRAM energy during inference of the above convolutional neural networks, where the proposed architecture shows the possibility of considerable energy saving up to 10 ~ 37.5% of total DRAM energy.
In these days, we are faced to a couple of difficult problems, the one is the unstable price of the energy due to the shortage of fossil fuel resources and the other is the serious environmental pollution from the excessive consumption of fossil fuel. In order to save the thermal energy for the house heating, in this study the heat pump using the natural thermal energy resources was provided for Ondol heating and the thermal energy consumption of the heat was compared to that of oil boiler. The results could be summarized as follows: 1. In the Ondol room the temperature difference between the Ondol surface and room air was about 5∼$10^{\circ}C$ in accordance with the ambient temperature. 2. The Ondol room heating efficiency of the heat pump with compressor of 2PS was the highest at the water flow rate of 200 l/h. 3. The energy saving rate of the heat pump to the oil boiler for heating the Ondol system was 19.3%. 4. The Ondol heating cost of the heat pump was less 20.6% than that of oil boiler when oil price was 478 won/l.
In this study, we propose an Energy-Aware Web service to optimize energy efficiency using the characteristics of the system load. Currently, the service scale of data center is growing and the range of its applications is enlarged, causing interest in energy conservation. In particular, the web service has the largest proportion among various services of the data center. We propose a new energy saving method for web services guaranteeing the performance requirements of the services. The proposed method is optimized through the differences of energy-consumption rate over the system load. Performance evaluation has been performed under conditions similar to the actual service. The results indicated that the maximum energy reduction by the proposed method is up to 30% better than the existing methods.
