  • Nuclear technology made a great contribution to the national economy and society by localization of nuclear power plant design, and by stabilization of electricity price, etc. It is very important to conduct the retrospective analysis for the nuclear technology contribution to the national economy and society, but it is more important to conduct prospective analysis for the nuclear technology contribution. The term "technology value" is often used in the prospective analysis to value the result of technology development. There are various definitions of technology value, but generally it means the increment of future revenue or the reduction of future cost by technology development. These technology valuation methods are widely used in various fields (information technology or energy technology, etc). The main objective of this research is to develop valuation methodology that represents unique characteristics of nuclear power technology. The valuation methodology that incorporates market share changes of generation technologies was developed. The technology valuation model which consists of five modules (electricity demand forecast module, technology development module, market share module, electricity generation module, total cost module) to incorporate market share changes of generation technologies was developed. The nuclear power technology value assessed by this technology valuation model was 3 times more than the value assessed by the conventional method. So it was confirmed that it is very important to incorporates market share changes of generation technologies. The valuation results of nuclear power technology in this study can be used as policy data for ensuring the benefits of nuclear power R&D (Research and Development) investment.

  • The necessity and the importance of the remanufacturing are increasing day by day along with environmental problems. Many studies are being conducted on remanufacturing, but the research for cleaning is much lacking. This study aims to evaluate the effective cleaning method for remanufacturing of start motors, one of the automobile parts. The cleaning process consists of oil stain removal, drying and rust removal processes. In this study, the two processes were conducted except for the drying process which has little influence on cleaning. The methodology for cleaning agent selection, degreasing and rust removal process was presented. For each methodology, five analysis factors were calculated by two-way comparison according to the process, and the values were evaluated quantitatively by substituting them into the evaluation table. In the selection of cleaning agent, neutral system, ultrasonic cleaning in degreasing, and grinding in rust removal were selected as the best cleaning methods.

  • The safety of nuclear power plants has received much attention; this safety largely depends on the continuous availability of electrical energy source during all modes of nuclear power plant operation. A station blackout (SBO) describes the loss of the off-site electric power, the failure of the emergency diesel generators, and the unavailability of the alternate AC (AAC) power. Consequently, all systems that are AC powered such as the safety injection, shutdown cooling, component cooling water, and essential service water systems are unavailable. The aim of this study is to investigate the deficiencies of the existing alternatives for coping with an extended SBO for APR1400 design. The method is analyzing the existing deficiencies and proposing an optimal solution for the NPP design during the extended SBO. This study, established a new passive system, called passive decay heat removal system (PDHRS), using systems engineering approach.

  • The seismic isolation system makes a structure isolated from ground motions to protect the structure from seismic events. Seismic isolation techniques have been implemented in full-scale buildings and bridges because of their simplicity, economic effectiveness, inherent stability and reliability. As for the responses of an isolated structure due to seismic events, it is well known that the most uncertain aspects are the seismic loading itself and structural properties. Due to the randomness of earthquakes and uncertainty of structures, seismic response distributions of an isolated structure are needed when evaluating the seismic fragility assessment (or probabilistic seismic safety assessment) of an isolated structure. Seismic response time histories are useful and often essential elements in its design or evaluation stage. Thus, a large number of non-linear dynamic analyses should be performed to evaluate the seismic performance of an isolated structure. However, it is a monumental task to gather the design or evaluation information of the isolated structure from too many seismic analyses, which is impractical. In this paper, a new methodology that can evaluate the seismic fragility assessment of an isolated structure is proposed by using stochastic response database, which is a device that can estimate the seismic response distributions of an isolated structure without any seismic response analyses. The seismic fragility assessment of the isolated nuclear power plant is performed using the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology is able to evaluate the seismic performance of isolated structures effectively and reduce the computational efforts tremendously.

  • The study measures the resource use efficiency of diesel based power generation in the Maldives and analyses factors which influence efficiency levels. Stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) technique is applied to data on 30 plants over two year period from 2016 to 2017. The study finds that technical efficiency scores varies from 0.44 to 0.98 across power plants. About 33 percent of the plants have scores below the mean technical efficiency score of 0.87. Empirical results indicate ownership and use of solar photovoltaic (PV) have an influence on improving efficiency levels. Privately owned power plants in resort islands obtained higher technical efficiency scores compared to public and community owned power plants. This is a significant finding as the first study that used power plants in tourist sector in a comparative study. Size of the power plants was not found significant, but relatively small installed capacities can also be efficient. This finding is important because in many inhabited islands installed capacities remain oversized compared to the load. The benchmarking exercise offers model power plants that are relatively efficient, for other power plants and policy makers in small islands to learn from.

  • A dietary survey was conducted using 24-hour recall method in 80 male elementary school children, 83 high school students, 87 adults and 98 elderly people over 65 years of age to discuss food and nutrient intakes among different age groups. In observing food intake by age groups, the percentage of plant foods to total food intake was significantly higher in the elderly than other groups and that of animal foods was the highest in the children. The children consumed significantly higher amounts of milk and dairy products. Carbohydrate energy percent in the elderly people was 68.0%, significantly higher than other age groups. All age groups consumed Ca below Korean RDA and especially, 65.1% of the adolescents and 68.4% of the elderly consumed below 75% of RDA. Nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) of most nutrients was lowest in the elderly. Mean adequacy ratio (MAR), an index of overall dietary quality, was 0.94 for the children, 0.84 for the adolescents, 0.84 for the adults, and 0.73 for the elderly. The above results suggest that food and nutrient intakes have been differently affected with advancing age, and overall dietary quality of the elderly people is lower than that of other age groups. • Current supervision systems have been changed by the demands of social, physical and institutional environment, and have a role of preventing safety accident and in improving the construct ability through the analysis of issues in quality, time, construction, safety, and environmental management. The public sector "Construction Technology Management Act", a general and private sector "Building Act" and "Certified Architects Act", the residential building "Housing Act" are dealt with supervision systems, respectively, but private small building construction is excluded from the discussion of the main targets because of their relatively small scale and the lack of social interests, Thus, this study focused on the small buildings for improving the non-resident supervision systems. Survey results revealed that the non-resident supervisor needs to be selected not by clients but by officers in order to obtain its publicity. Based on the proper selection and execution of the supervision system suggested in this study, the potential effects can be summarized as 1) recovering of publicity, 2) correcting abnormal practice, and 3) realizing design intention for increasing the public value of buildings. In addition, findings in this study will be effective to amend current non-resident supervision systems for improving the quality of buildings and communities as well as for adopting the environmental-friendly energy-efficient smart building technologies.

  • Good plant-growth conditions can be achieved by means of using greenhouses. One of the main issues in greenhouse cultivation is energy savings through the development of high efficient heating and cooling system. GSHPs are one of the recommended systems to cope with this pending need. The aim of this study is to investigate the heating performance of ground source multi-heat pump system installed in a greenhouse under part load conditions. Daily average heating COP of the heat pump unit was very high by at least 7.4, because of relatively large condenser, evaporator, and mass flow rate through ground loop heat exchanger. However, the system COP, overall heating coefficient of the performance of the system with heat pump unit and GLHX, decreased drastically due to relatively large power consumption of circulating pump under part load condition. It is suggested that the technology to enhance the performance of the ground source multi-heat pump system for a greenhouse under part load conditions should be developed.

  • The large buildings in Korea usually use the generators to control the peak load of electronic consumption during the summer. It is necessary that these generators emit carbon dioxide, since they use gas or gasoline for their fuel. This study is to analyze the data of electronic consumption and operation of the generators at COEX, one of the representative complex building clusters in Korea, and to compare to the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per 1kWh from the domestic power plant by analogizing the frequency of using the generator during the summer and the amount of fuel consumption by the capacity of the generator and estimating the amount of carbon dioxide emitted from the generator.

  • In case of low pressure steam turbine used in power plant, it was operated in wet steam and high stress condition. Therefore, it is possible that the corrosion damage of low pressure was induced by this condition. According to previous study, about 30% of total blade failure correspond to corrosion fatigue or SCC(stress corrosion cracking) in low pressure turbine. Especially, LSB(last stage bucket) of low pressure turbine has a higher hardness to prevent erosion damage due to water droplet however, generally this is more dangerous for SCC damage. Therefore, to improve reliability of turbine blade. various methods for SCC evaluation has been developed. In this study, the crack found in LSB during in-service inspection was evaluated using microstructure analysis and stress analysis. From the stress analysis, the optimum size of fillet to remove the crack was proposed. And also, the reliability was evaluated for modified LSB using GOODMAN diagram.
