  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate nutrient intake and meal variety with breakfast eating in Korean adolescents using data from the 2008-2009 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The analysis included 1245 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. The subjects were divided into two groups according to breakfast skipping (BS: breakfast skipping, n = 235, BE: breakfast eating, n = 1110). The BS group was significantly higher in its frequency of eating soda drinks, instant noodle, and ice cream than the BE group. The BS group consumed significantly lower quantities of plant calcium and plant protein per 1,000 kcal compared to the BE group. Also the intake of cereal and vegetables in the BS group was significantly lower than those in the BE group, however, the intake of beverage in the BS group was significantly higher than that in the BE group. The average number of foods of the BE and BS groups were 29.50 and 25.85, respectively and revealed a statistical significance (p < 0.0001). The snack intake and % energy from snack intake of the BS group were significantly higher than those of the BE group. Also, the fasting blood glucose concentrations were significantly higher in the BS group compared to the BE group. In conclusion, adolescents who skip breakfast may have lower meal variety and higher blood glucose concentrations. Therefore, in support of proper dietary management, it is necessary to promote and encourage breakfast eating.

  • Although the anthracite power plant is an important source of greenhouse gas, research on this type of power plant has not been conducted much. The present study investigated the entire anthracite power plants in Korea and analyzed the emitted gas in connection with GC/FD and a methanizer in order to develop $CO_2$ emission factors. The study also sampled the anthracite to analyze the amount of carbon and hydrogen using an element analyzer, and to measure the calorie using an automatic calorie analyzer. The emission factors computed through the fuel analysis was 30.45 kg/GJ and that computed through the $CO_2$ gas analysis was 26.48 kg/GJ. The former is approximately about 15% higher than the latter. When compared the carbon content factors of anthracite with that of bituminous coal, the value of anthracite was 24% higher Compared with IPCC values, the emission factors by the fuel was 14% higher, and that by the emitted $CO_2$ gas was about 1.2% lower. More research is needed on our own emission factors of various energy-consuming facilities in order to stand on a higher position in international negotiations regarding the treaties on climate changes.

  • Although anthracite power plant acts as the important source of greenhouse gas emissions, relatively little is known about its emission potentials. Especially, because the emissions of Non-$CO_2$ greenhouse gas $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ are strongly dependent on fuel type and technology available, it is desirable to obtain the information concerning their emission pattens. In this study, the anthracite power plants in Korea were investigated and the emission gases were analyzed using GC/FID and GC/ECD to develop Non-$CO_2$ emission factors. The anthracite samples were also analyzed to quantity the amount of carbon and hydrogen using an element analyzer, while calorie was measured by an automatic calorie analyzer. The emission factor of $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ computed through the gas analysis corresponded to 0.73 and 1.98 kg/TJ, respectively. Compared with IPCC values, the $CH_4$ emission factor in this study was about 25% lower, while that of $N_2O$ was higher by about 40%. More research is needed to extend our database for emission factors of various energy-consuming facilities in order to stand on a higher position.

  • Load transfer experiments have been carried out to evaluate the performance of the anchorage and it has been stated that the specimens were manufactured and tested according to ETAG 013. On the other hand, the amount of spiral reinforcement and auxiliary reinforcement exceeded the amount specified in ETAG 013. In this study, the load transfer test method and the criteria specified in ETAG 013 were considered and the PT anchorage system was applied to manufacture specimens with high strength concrete and a high tensile prestressing strand. A load transfer test according to ETAG 013 was performed to evaluate the performance of the circular anchorage. As a result, it was confirmed that ETAG 013 is a very strict specification that does not satisfy the performance of an anchorage unless the specimens of an appropriate size and spiral reinforcement are used. To assess the stability of the specimens, increasing the size of the specimen by 15%, rather than increasing the amount of auxiliary reinforcement, is considered to be the correct method in accordance with ETAG 013.

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm that regular physical exercise habit and calcium intake play a role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly to confirm that regular exercise is important in reducing serum lipid levels in postmenopausal women. Subjects were classified into regular exercise group(more than 3 times/wk, more than 30 min per exercise) and non-regular exercise group. A convenient frequency method was used to assess the nutritional intake of subjects. Anthropometric measurement such as body weight and height, and blood pressure were measured. There was no significant difference between non-regular exercise group and regular exercise group in energy intake and calcium intake. The total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations in non-regular exercise group were significantly higher than those in regular exercise group. There were no significant correlations between age or weight with blood lipids and blood pressure in regular exercise group, while there were significant positive correlations between age or weight with blood lipids and blood pressure in non-regular exercise group. The levels of serum cholesterol, triglyceride, blood pressure and atherogenic index increased with age in non-regular exercise women. The blood pressure in low total Ca intake/plant Ca intake ratio group was significantly higher than that in high total Ca intake/plant Ca intake ratio group. There was a highly significant positive correlation between Ca intake and HDL-cholesterol in non-regular exercise women. And, there was a highly significant negative correlation between Ca intake and blood pressure in regular exercise women. The results suggest that increased habitual physical activity and calcium intake should be recommended by way of decreasing blood lipids and blood pressure in postmenopausal women. • Forages are the most important feed resource for ruminants worldwide, whether fed as pastures, forage crops or conserved hay, silage or haylage. There is large variability in the quality of forages so measurement and prediction of feeding value and nutritive value are essential for high levels of production. Within a commercial animal production system, methods of prediction must be inexpensive and rapid. At least 50% of the variation in feeding value of forages is due to variation in voluntary feed intake. Identification of the factors that constrain voluntary feed intake allows these differences to be managed and exploited in forage selection. Constraints to intake have been predicted using combinations of metabolic and physical factors within the animal while simple measurements such as the energy required to shear the plant material are related to constraints to intake with some plant material. Animals respond to both pre- and post-ingestive feedback signals from forages. Pre-ingestive signals may play a role in intake with signals including taste, odour and texture together with learned aversions to nutrients or toxins (post-ingestive feedback signals). The challenge to forage evaluation is identification of the factors which are most important contributors to these feedback signals. Empirical models incorporating chemical composition are also widely used. The models tend to be useful within the ranges of the datasets used in their development but none can claim to have universal application. Mechanistic models are becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated and incorporate both feed characteristics and use of biochemical pathways within the animal. Improvement in utilisation through the deliberate selection of pasture plants for high feeding value appears to have potential and has been poorly exploited. Use of Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy is a simple method that offers significant potential for the preliminary screening of plants with genetic differences in feeding value. Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy will only be as reliable as the calibration sets from which the equations are generated.

  • To cope with sever accident like Fukushima accident, the emergency response system is needed. It consist of the hardened I&C system and the mobile control station. The hardened I&C system monitors the state in the nuclear power plant and controls the emergency equipment such as valves, pumps and the mobile control station placed at 30km away from nuclear power plant receives the status information from the hardened I&C system and transmits the control data to the hardened I&C system. In this paper, we design the emergency communication system connecting the hardened I&C system to the mobile control station and analyze the performance of the system. This system consists of the terrestrial communication system and the satellite communication. The performance such as a communication link budget, throughput and delay time is analyzed for each system.

  • Because of industrial development, industrial facilities are becoming more complex and diversified. Plant industries are focused on productivity improvement, cost reduction, and product uniformity by simplifying production processes using automated control. Furthermore, plant industries require higher pressures and temperatures to improve energy efficiency. For this reason, the valves used in plants are operated under harsh conditions. Globe valves and gate valves are mainly used for high pressure these days. However, these valves have various problems, including low maintainability and high cost, due to structural problems. Therefore, butterfly and ball valve applications are increasing in industrial plants. This paper suggests a quadruple-offset butterfly valve that is applicable to bi-direction use, and the principle design parameters are suggested. The selected design parameters are an eccentric flange center line and shaft centerline(Offset 1), an eccentric seat centerline and disc shaft centerline(Offset 2), the angle between the flange centerline and seat wedge angle(Offset 3), the angle between the vertical direction of the disc shaft centerline and seat centerline(Offset 4), and the seat engagement angle. To analyze the interaction effect of the design parameters, ANOM and ANOVA were performed with an orthogonal array. The parameters were found to have effects in the following order: Offset 2, Offset 1, engagement angle, Offset 3, and Offset 4. The interaction between the parameters was insignificant.

  • This article suggests the radionuclides which should be considered more important to the offsite consequence assesment during a nuclear power plant accident. For this purpose, the relative importance to the early health effects of released radionuclides on the major organs during the accident is estimated under the assumption of the same release fraction. The inventories of the 25 elements, 54 nuclides selected in the Reactor Safety Study are calculated by ORIGEN 2 code. The organs of interest in the estimation are G. I. track, bone marrow, thyroid and lung. The result shows the relative potential importance of radionuclides as follows: For G.I. track, Np, Ce, Ru, Y, and Zr are of importance in sequence, Np, I, La, Sr, Ba for bone marrow, I and Te for thyroid, Cm, Ce, Ru, Pu, Zr for lung. In addition to iodine and noble gases, therefore, the potential contribution of those nuclides listed above to the offsite consequences should not be overlooked for some accidents of particular sequence.

  • Accurate identification of damping matrix in structures is very important for predicting vibration responses and estimating parameters or other characteristics affected by energy dissipation. In this paper, damping matrix identification method that use normal frequency response functions, which were estimated from complex frequency response functions, is proposed. The complex frequency response functions were obtained from the experimental data of the structure. The nonproportional damping matrix was identified through the proposed method. Two numerical examples (lumped-mass model and cantilever beam model) were considered to verify the performance of the proposed method. As a result, the damping matrix of the nonproportional system was accurately identified.
