In the event of loss of coolant accident (LOCA) and station black out (SBO) in the primary system of a nuclear reactor, the coolant water should be injected to reactor coolant system (RCS) without any intervention of operators or active components. To satisfy the requirements, hybrid safety injection tank (Hybrid SIT) was suggested by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). The pressure equalizing time of Hybrid SIT is an important parameter to determine the timing of coolant injection. To predict the pressure equalizing time of the Hybrid SIT, a separate effect test facility was constructed and sensitivity tests were conducted in various conditions. The main parameter determining the pressure equalizing time was obtained from separate effect test (SET) results. The wall of condensation on the inner wall of SIT and direct contact condensation on the water surface affected to the pressure equalizing time very much. In this study, the effect of each condensation phenomena on pressure equalizing time was quantitatively analyzed from results of SET and a prediction method of pressure equalizing time was proposed.
To examine the causal relationship between geomagnetic storm and substorm, we investigate the correlation between dispersionless particle injection rate of proton flux observed from geosynchronous satellites, which is known to be a typical indicator of the substorm expansion activity, and Dst index during magnetic storms. We utilize geomagnetic storms occurred during the period of 1996 ~ 2000 and categorize them into three classes in terms of the minimum value of the Dst index ($Dst_{min}$); intense ($-200nT{$\leq$}Dst_{min}{$\leq$}-100nT$), moderate($-100nT{\leq}Dst_{min}{\leq}-50nT$), and small ($-50nT{\leq}Dst_{min}{\leq}-30nT$) -30nT)storms. We use the proton flux of the energy range from 50 keV to 670 keV, the major constituents of the ring current particles, observed from the LANL geosynchronous satellites located within the local time sector from 18:00 MLT to 04:00 MLT. We also examine the flux ratio ($f_{max}/f_{ave}$) to estimate particle energy injection rate into the inner magnetosphere, with $f_{ave}$ and $f_{max}$ being the flux levels during quiet and onset levels, respectively. The total energy injection rate into the inner magnetosphere can not be estimated from particle measurements by one or two satellites. However, the total energy injection rate should be at least proportional to the flux ratio and the injection frequency. Thus we propose a quantity, “total energy injection parameter (TEIP)”, defined by the product of the flux ratio and the injection frequency as an indicator of the injected energy into the inner magnetosphere. To investigate the phase dependence of the substorm contribution to the development of magnetic storm, we examine the correlations during the two intervals, main and recovery phase of storm separately. Several interesting tendencies are noted particularly during the main phase of storm. First, the average particle injection frequency tends to increase with the storm size with the correlation coefficient being 0.83. Second, the flux ratio ($f_{max}/f_{ave}$) tends to be higher during large storms. The correlation coefficient between $Dst_{min}$ and the flux ratio is generally high, for example, 0.74 for the 75~113 keV energy channel. Third, it is also worth mentioning that there is a high correlation between the TEIP and $Dst_{min}$ with the highest coefficient (0.80) being recorded for the energy channel of 75~113 keV, the typical particle energies of the ring current belt. Fourth, the particle injection during the recovery phase tends to make the storms longer. It is particularly the case for intense storms. These characteristics observed during the main phase of the magnetic storm indicate that substorm expansion activity is closely associated with the development of mangetic storm.

Gas turbine system with steam injection has shown outstanding advantages such as high specific power and NOx reduction. In the present work, a comparative exergetic analysis was carried out for Steam Injected Gas Turbine (STIG), Regenerative Steam Injected Gas Turbine (RSTIG), and Regenerative After Fogging Gas Turbine (RAF). Effects of pressure ratio, steam injection ratio and steam injection method on the system performance was theoretically investigated. The results showed that the order of the highest exergy efficiency is RSTIG, RAF, and STIG for low pressure ratios but STIG, RSTIG, and RAF for high pressure ratios. In each arrangement, the combustion chamber has the highest exergy destruction and the compressor has the second one.
Due to its carbon-neutral nature, biogas generated from anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable wastes is one of the important renewable energy sources to reduce global warming. It is mainly composed of methane and various inert gases such as $CO_2$ and $N_2$, and the actual composition of biogas significantly varies depending on the origin of anaerobic digestion process. Therefore, in order to effectively utilize this fuel as an energy source for electricity, it is important to develop power generation engines which can successfully apply biogas with significant composition variations. In this study, efforts have been made to develop a diesel-biogas duel fuel engine as a way to achieve such a stable power generation. The effects of diesel fuel injection quantity and pressure on stable combustion and engine performance were investigated, and an impact of diesel fuel atomization was discussed. The engine test results show that there exists a 2 stage combustion which consists of diesel pilot fuel burning and premixed biogas/air mixture burning in dual fuel engine operation and optimum diesel injection parameters were suggested for biogases with various compositions and heating values.

Recently, instrumentation and control (I&C) systems in nuclear power plants have undergone digitalization. Owing to the unique characteristics of digital I&C systems, the reliability analysis of digital systems has become an important element of probabilistic safety assessment (PSA). In a reliability analysis of digital systems, fault-tolerant techniques and their effectiveness must be considered. A fault injection experiment was performed on a safety-critical digital I&C system developed for nuclear power plants to evaluate the effectiveness of fault-tolerant techniques implemented in the target system. A software-implemented fault injection in which faults were injected into the memory area was used based on the assumption that all faults in the target system will be reflected in the faults in the memory. To reduce the number of required fault injection experiments, the memory assigned to the target software was analyzed. In addition, to observe the effect of the fault detection coverage of fault-tolerant techniques, a PSA model was developed. The analysis of the experimental result also can be used to identify weak points of fault-tolerant techniques for capability improvement of fault-tolerant techniques
High injection pressure system has been developed as a measure to reduce harmful exhaust gases. In order to understand the effect of pressure on diesel spray injection process, wide range of high injection pressure was tested. The gas phase is modelled by the Eulerian continuum conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and fuel vapour fraction. The liquid phase is modelled following the discrete droplet model approach in Lagrangian form. The droplet distributions, vapor fractions and gas flows are analyzed in various injection pressure cases. The distributions of spray and vapor increase and the Sauter mean diameter decreases with increasing injection pressure quickly in a low pressure area but slowly in a high pressure area.
We investigate driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence by including the effects of expansion and collapse of background medium. The main goal is to quantify the evolution and saturation of strength and characteristic lengths of magnetic fields in expanding and collapsing media. Our findings are as follows. First, with expansion and collapse of background medium, the magnetic energy density per comoving volume does not saturate; either it keeps decreasing or increasing with time. The magnetic energy density relative to the kinetic energy density strongly depends on the expanding or collapsing rate. Second, at scales close to the energy injection (or driving) scale, the slope of magnetic field power spectrum shallows with expansion but steepens with collapse. Third, various characteristic lengths, relative to the energy injection scale, decrease with expansion but increase with collapse. We discuss the astrophysical implications of our findings.
This paper presents development of a CO2 injectivity analysis model using nodal analysis for the depleted oil reservoirs in Malaysia. Based on the final well report of an appraisal well, a basic model was established, and sensitivity analysis was performed on injection pressure, tubing size, reservoir pressure, reservoir permeability, and thickness. Utilizing the well testing report of A appraisal well, permeability of 10md was determined through production nodal analysis. Using the basic input data from the A appraisal well, an injection well model was set. Nodal analysis of the basic model, at the bottomhole pressure of 3000.74psia, estimated the CO2 injection rate to be 13.29MMscfd. As the results of sensitivity analysis, the injection pressure, reservoir thickness, and permeability tend to exhibit a roughly linear increase in injection rate when they were higher, while a decrease in reservoir pressure at injection also resulted in an approximate linear increase in injection rate. Analyzing the injection rate per inch of tubing size, the optimal tubing size of 2.548inch was determined. It is recommended that if the formation parting pressure is known, performing nodal analysis can predict the maximum reservoir pressure and injection pressure by comparing with bottomhole pressure.
