  • This paper presents a method for real-time estimation of TCSC reference quantity in order to enhance the power system transient stability energy margin using artificial neural network in multi-machine system. This paper has the three parts, the first part is to determine the lines to be installed by TCSC. The seconds is to estimate the energy margin using by ANN. To get the critical energy for training, we use the potential energy boundary surface(PEBS) method which is one of the transient energy function(TEF) method. And the last is to determine the TCSC reference quantity. In order to make training data for ANN in this step, we use genetic algorithm(GA). The proposed method is applied to 39-bus, 46-line. 10-machine model system to show its effectiveness.

  • An instantaneous amplitude (IA) estimator using the symmetric higher order differential energy operator is proposed. The amplitude estimator and the instantaneous frequency (IF) estimator based on the symmetric higher order differential energy operator coincide with the analyzed signal in time, and they show better estimation results than the IA and IF based on the higher order differential energy operator. Various IF and IA estimators are applied to AM-FM signals for the performance comparison. Among the IF and IA estimators, the IF and IA estimators based on the symmetric higher order energy operator show the best estimation accuracy. Then, the IA and IF estimators are applied to the distorted power line signal to show their usefulness as power disturbance detectors.

  • Large offshore wind farms have actively been developed in order to meet the needs for wind energy since the land-based wind farms have almost been fully developed especially in Europe. The key problem for the construction of offshore wind farms may be on the high cost of energy compared to land-based ones. NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) has developed a spreadsheet-based tool to estimate the cost of wind-generated electricity from both land-based and offshore wind turbines. Component formulas for various kinds and scales of wind turbines were made using available field data. In this paper, this NREL estimation model is introduced and applied to the offshore wind turbines now under designing or in production in Korea, and the result is discussed.

  • Background: Industrial X-ray CT system is normally applied to non-destructive testing (NDT) for industrial product made from metal. Furthermore there are some special CT systems, which have an ability to inspect nuclear fuel assemblies or rocket motors, using high power and high energy (more than 6 MeV) pulsed X-ray source. In these case, pulsed X-ray are produced by the electron linear accelerator, and a huge number of photons with a wide energy spectrum are produced within a very short period. Consequently, it is difficult to measure the X-ray energy spectrum for such accelerator-based X-ray sources using simple spectrometry. Due to this difficulty, unexpected images and artifacts which lead to incorrect density information and dimensions of specimens cannot be avoided in CT images. For getting highly precise CT images, it is important to know the precise energy spectrum of emitted X-rays. Materials and Methods: In order to realize it we investigated a new approach utilizing the Bayesian estimation method combined with an attenuation curve measurement using step shaped attenuation material. This method was validated by precise measurement of energy spectrum from a 1 MeV electron accelerator. In this study, to extend the applicable X-ray energy range we tried to measure energy spectra of X-ray sources from 6 and 9 MeV linear accelerators by using the recently developed method. Results and Discussion: In this study, an attenuation curves are measured by using a step-shaped attenuation materials of aluminum and steel individually, and the each X-ray spectrum is reconstructed from the measured attenuation curve by the spectrum type Bayesian estimation method. Conclusion: The obtained result shows good agreement with simulated spectra, and the presently developed technique is adaptable for high energy X-ray source more than 6 MeV.

  • Electric energy consumption is always followed by the introduction of diversity scale-up and state-of-the-art equipments in logistic centers. In order to analyze the status and the characteristic of the electric energy consumption quantitatively, and also to evaluate the efficiency of the electric energy, this research aims to develop an estimation model of standard electric energy consumption for logistic centers. The proposed model applies the thermodynamics theory so as to effectively reflect the peculiarity that the temperature in the logistic center influences the electric energy consumption. And the model consists of the energy consumed by the refrigerator, which can be subdivided into the heat conducted through the wall, the heat convected by the open doors and the heat lost into the goods, and the electric consumption of the machinery equipments. The model also includes a variety of explanatory variables to support an operator of logistics centers in evaluating the efficiency of energy consumption and establishing improvement strategies for energy efficiency. Application of the model developed in this study is discussed with observed data on energy consumption of a logistics center.

  • In the server cluster environment, one of the ways saving energy is to control server's power according to traffic conditions. This is to determine the ON/OFF state of servers according to energy usage of data center and each server. To do this, we need a way to estimate each server's energy. In this paper, we use a software-based power consumption estimation model because it is more efficient than the hardware model using power meter in terms of energy and cost. The traditional software-based power consumption estimation model has a drawback in that it doesn't know well the computing status of servers because it uses only the idle status field of CPU. Therefore it doesn't estimate consumption power effectively. In this paper, we present a CPU field based power consumption estimation model to estimate more accurate than the two traditional models (CPU/Disk/Memory utilization based power consumption estimation model and CPU idle utilization based power consumption estimation model) by using the various status fields of CPU to get the CPU status of servers and the overall status of system. We performed experiments using 2 PCs and compared the power consumption estimated by the power consumption model (software) with that measured by the power meter (hardware). The experimental results show that the traditional model has about 8-15% average error rate but our proposed model has about 2% average error rate.

  • The goal of energy-based seismic design is to obtain a structural design with a higher energy dissipation capacity than the energy dissipation demands incurred under earthquake motions. Accurate estimation of the story hysteretic energy demand of a multi-story structure is the key to meeting this goal. Based on the assumption of a mode-equivalent single-degree-of-freedom system, the energy equilibrium relationship of a multi-story structure under seismic action is transformed into that of a multi-mode analysis of several single degree-of-freedom systems. A simplified equation for the estimation of the story seismic hysteretic energy demand was then derived according to the story shear force and deformation of multi-story buildings, and the deformation and energy relationships between the mode-equivalent single-degree-of-freedom system and the original structure. Sites were categorized into three types based on soil hardness, namely, hard soil, intermediate hard (soft) soil, and soft soil. For each site type, a 5-story and 10-story reinforced concrete frame structure were designed and employed as calculation examples. Fifty-six earthquake acceleration records were used as horizontal excitations to validate the accuracy of the proposed method. The results verify the following. (1) The distribution of seismic hysteretic energy along the stories demonstrate a degree of regularity. (2) For the low rise buildings, use of only the first mode shape provides reasonably accurate results, whereas, for the medium or high rise buildings, several mode shapes should be included and superposed to achieve high precision. (3) The estimated hysteretic energy distribution of bottom stories tends to be underestimated, which should be modified in actual applications.

  • Geothermal-energy has been getting popular as a natural energy source for green buildings these days. As a result Geothermal Source Heat Pump System (GSHPs) was being recognized effective alternative systems to conventional heating and cooling systems owing to their higher energy utilization efficiency. But GSHPs has not been popularized thereby the large amount of initial cost of the system and insufficiency of studies for economic estimation. Therefore GSHPs are being developed to make up for the weak points that are the large amount of initial cost of the system and much annual electricity consumption. In this paper, economic estimation was conducted by payback period method and it shows that the pay back period of Heat Storage Type GSHPs was calculated 6.8 years compared with the absorption Chiller-Heater system and 8.2 years compared with the Ice storage-Boiler system. Heat Storage Type GSHPs also has the lower annual source energy consumption than the conventional heating and cooling systems because of using nighttime electricity.
