We have designed and developed novel luminescent lanthanide complexes for advanced photonics applications. Lanthanide(III) ions (Ln$^{3+}$) were encapsulated by the luminescent ligands such as metalloporphyrins and naphthalenes. The energy levels of the luminescent ligands were tailored to maintain the effective energy transfer process from luminescent ligands to Ln$^{3+}$ ions for getting a higher optical amplification gain. Also, key parameters for emission enhancement and efficient energy transfer pathways for the sensitization of Ln$^{3+}$ ions by luminescent ligands were investigated. Furthermore, to enhance the optophysical properties of novel luminescent Ln$^{3+}$ complexes, aryl ether-functionalized dendrons as photon antennas have been incorporated into luminescent Ln$^{3+}$ complexes, yielding novel Ln(III)-cored dendrimer complex. The novel Ln(III)-cored dendrimer complex has much higher PL intensity than the corresponding simple complex, due to the efficient site-isolation effect. In this article, we will deal with recent progress in the synthesis and photophysical studies of inert and stable luminescent Ln$^{3+}$ complexes for advanced photonics applications. Also, our review will include the exploratory investigation of the key parameters for emission enhancement and the effective energy transfer pathways from luminescent ligands to Ln$^{3+}$ ions with Ln(III)-chelated prototype complexes.

The energy and momentum coefficients ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ are measures of homogenerity of velocity distribution in a chanel section. They indicate the effect of energy and momentum transport. However, in most practical applications, they are assumed to be unity due to the difficulty in estimating them. Efforts have been made in this study to estimate these coefficients and to develop equations for practical applications. The Prandtl-von Karman logarithmic equation as being used today has limitations and far-reaching assumptions. Therefore, this paper uses Chiu's velocity distribution equation which seems to be capable of serving as such an alternative, to estimate the velocity distribution and the energy and momentum coefficients, ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ results are compared with those computed by other existing equations. For practical applications, this paper also uses Chiu's equation along with the Mannig's equation to calculate ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ without velocity data

Li ion battery (LIB) is one of the most remarkable energy storage devices currently available in various applications. With a growing demand for high-performance batteries, the role of electrochemical analysis for batteries, especially, electrode reactions are becoming very important and crucial. Among various analytical methods, cyclic voltammetry (CV) is very versatile and widely used in many fields of electrochemistry. Through CV, it is possible to know electrochemical factors affecting the reaction voltage and reversibility, and furthermore, quantitative analysis on Li+ diffusivity as well as intercalation and capacitive reactions, and also anionic redox reaction. However, the explanation or interpretation of the results of CV is often deficient or controversial. In this mini-review, we briefly introduce the principle of cyclic voltammetry and its applications in LIB to bring a better understanding of the electrochemical reaction mechanisms involved in LIB.
Many mobile applications, such as games, security software and mathematical applications, use a random number generator(RNG). Since mobile devices operate under a limited battery capacity, the low energy consumption is one of key system requirements. For mobile applications based on an RNG, it is important to use low-power RNGs. In this article, we evaluate the energy efficiency of several well-known RNG algorithms and suggest guidelines for selecting RNGs suitable for mobile application.

Internet-based social and interactive video applications have become major constituents of the envisaged applications for next-generation multimedia networks. However, inherently dynamic network conditions, together with varying user expectations, pose many challenges for resource allocation mechanisms for such applications. Yet, in addition to addressing these challenges, service providers must also consider how to mitigate their operational costs (e.g., energy costs, equipment costs) while satisfying the end-user quality of service (QoS) expectations. This paper proposes a heuristic solution to the problem, where the energy incurred by the applications, and the monetary costs associated with the service infrastructure, are minimized while simultaneously maximizing the average end-user QoS. We evaluate the performance of the proposed solution in terms of serving probability, i.e., the likelihood of being able to allocate resources to groups of users, the computation time of the resource allocation process, and the adaptability and sensitivity to dynamic network conditions. The proposed method demonstrates improvements in serving probability of up to 27%, in comparison with greedy resource allocation schemes, and a several-orders-of-magnitude reduction in computation time, compared to the linear programming approach, which significantly reduces the service-interrupted user percentage when operating under variable network conditions.

In this paper, we introduce an efficient energy management using a notion of virtual energy system for shared solar-powered sensor network. Virtual energy system is an abstraction that allows sensor network applications on a node to reserve their own fractions of the shared solar cell and the shared rechargeable battery, hence achieving logically partition of a shared renewable power source. Our results show that our design and implementation are reliable, lightweight and efficient, allowing proper isolation of energy consumption among applications.
In order to examine how accurately the wind farm design software, WindPRO and Meteodyn WT, predict annual energy production (AEP), an investigation was carried out for Seongsan wind farm of Jeju Island. The one-year wind data was measured from wind sensors on met masts of Susan and Sumang which are 2.3 km, and 18 km away from Seongsan wind farm, respectively. MERRA (Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications) reanalysis data was also analyzed for the same period of time. The real AEP data came from SCADA system of Seongsan wind farm, which was compare with AEP data predicted by WindPRO and Meteodyn WT. As a result, AEP predicted by Meteodyn WT was lower than that by WindPRO. The analysis of using wind data from met masts led to the conclusion that AEP prediction by CFD software, Meteodyn WT, is not always more accurate than that by linear program software, WindPRO. However, when MERRA reanalysis data was used, Meteodyn WT predicted AEP more accurately than WindPRO.
Energy efficiency is one of the most critical concerns for wireless sensor networks. By allowing sensor nodes in close proximity to cooperate in transmission to form a virtual multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) system, recent progress in wireless MIMO communications can be exploited to boost the system throughput, or equivalently reduce the energy consumption for the same throughput and BER target. However, these cooperative transmission strategies may incur additional energy cost and system overhead. In this paper, assuming that data collectors are equipped with antenna arrays and superior processing capability, energy efficiency of relevant traditional and cooperative transmission strategies: Single-input-multiple-output(SIMO), space-time block coding(STBC), and spatial multiplexing(SM) are studied. Analysis in the wideband regime reveals that, while receive diversity introduces significant improvement in both energy efficiency and spectral efficiency, further improvement due to the transmit diversity of STBC is limited, as opposed to the superiority of the SM scheme especially for non-trivial spectral efficiency. These observations are further confirmed in our analysis of more realistic systems with limited bandwidth, finite constellation sizes, and a target error rate. Based on this analysis, general guidelines are presented for optimal transmission strategy selection in system level and link level, aiming at minimum energy consumption while meeting different requirements. The proposed selection rules, especially those based on system-level metrics, are easy to implement for sensor applications. The framework provided here may also be readily extended to other scenarios or applications.

Piezoelectric ceramic fiber composite (PCFC) was fabricated using a planar electrode printed piezoelectric ceramic fiber driven in transverse mode for small-scale wind energy harvester applications. The PCFC consisted of an epoxy matrix material and piezoelectric ceramic fibers sandwiched by interdigitated electrode (IDE) patterned polyimide films. The PCFC showed an excellent mechanical performance under a continuous stress. For the fabrication of PCB cantilever harvester, five -PCFCs were vertically attached onto a flexible printed circuit board (PCB) substrate, and then PCFCs were serially connected through a printed Cu circuit. The energy harvesting performance was evaluated applying an inverted structure, which imples its free leading edge located at an open end but the trailing edge at a clamped end, to enhance strain energy in a wind tunnel. The output voltage of the PCB cantilever harvester was increased as the wind speed increased. The maximum output power was 17.2 ㎼ at a resistance load of 200 ㏀ and wind speed of 9 m/s. It is considered that the PCB cantilever energy harvester reveals a potential use for wind energy harvester applications.

In recent year, energy harvesting technologies from the ambient environments such as light, motion, wireless waves, and temperature again a lot of attraction form research community [1-5] due to its efficient solution in order to substitute for conventional power delivery methods, especially in wearable together with on-body applications. The drawbacks of battery-powered characteristic used in commodity applications lead to self-powered, long-lifetime circuit design. Thermoelectric generator, a solid-state sensor, is useful compared to the harvesting devices in order to enable self-sustained low-power applications. TEG based on the Seebeck effect is utilized to transfer thermal energy which is available with a temperature gradient into useful electrical energy. Depending on the temperature difference between two sides, amount of output power will be proportionally delivered. In this work, we illustrated a low-input voltage energy harvesting circuit applied discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) method for getting an adequate amount of energy from thermoelectric generator (TEG) for a specific wearable application. With a small temperature gradient harvested from human skin, the input voltage from the transducer is as low as 60mV, the proposed circuit, fabricated in a $0.6{\mu}m$ CMOS process, is capable of generating a regulated output voltage of 4.2V with an output power reaching to $40{\mu}W$. The proposed circuit is useful for powering energy to battery-less systems, such as wearable application devices.
