  • Background: Various solar energy collecting systems have been developed and analyzed for agricultural applications. They include solar thermal and electric devices such as solar crop dryers, solar water pumps, solar greenhouse heating, ventilation for livestock, solar aeration pumps, solar electricity, and many more. Purpose: This review provides the current status of research and development in the field as well as the solar energy systems that are currently in use in the agriculture sector across the globe. Review: Solar energy is the largest and cheapest energy resource on earth; one hour of solar radiation exceeds the complete global energy consumption in one year. The potential annual total solar radiation in South Korea is $3.58-5.4 kWh/m^2/day$. The available solar energy is sufficient for agricultural applications across the entire country. Conclusion: The scope of solar energy utilization in agricultural machinery engineering in South Korea and in other countries is promising.

  • Korea is utilizing geothermal resources mainly in the bathing and swimming facilities with very few applications for industrial processes or space heating. It is estimated that geothermal capacity and annual utilization are 36.2MWt and 761TJ/year as compared to global capacity and annual utilization of 15,145MWt and 190,699 TJ/year. RETScreen software is a user's friendly tool for analyzing the technical and financial pre-feasibility of potential Renewable Energy (RE) projects that promotes the use of RE applications through the capacity building of planners, decision-makers and industries for successful implementation of RE projects. Strong ties between Canada and Korean organizations such as Korean Solar Energy Society (KSES) and the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) exist for knowledge transfer about RETScreen. In this paper, an overview of RETScreen and its ground source heat pump (GSHP) model with a practical example of an existing project of a community hall in Canada are described to illustrate effectiveness of RETScreenin the implementation of RE technologies. The same community hall project is then evaluated hypothetically considering its location at Kangnyng, Korea. The main objective is to demonstrate how RETScreen GSHP model can also be utilized effectively for GSHP applications in Korea.

  • Patent analysis is the extracting knowledge which is needed for the company's research and development strategy through accumulated worldwide patent database. In order to set the future direction corresponding technology which is scheduled to be developed, the technology trends and deployment processes are identified by analyzing results of present patent applications. The patent analysis provides the required results for analyzing present patent applications. In this paper, technology classification for related patent analysis methods and system, and patent analysis for desalination technology using solar energy development was carried out as well. The patents in Korea, USA, Japan, China, and Europe were searched. The technology trend desalination technology using solar energy was analyzed based on patent application year, countries, main applications, and each technologies. The application status of desalination patents showed a tendency to increase slightly. It was found that the number of patent for applied desalination was USA patent 21.0%, Japan patent 27.0%, China 24.8%, EU 2.7% and Korea patent 24.5%, respectively.

  • This article reviews absorption cooling R&D in Europe from the viewpoint of fundamentals, cycle development and applications. The review contains information on R&D, predominantly of public projects in the field of sorption cooling. We report on research which is performed in Europe with some stress on Germany. There is progress in fundamentals, thermodynamic cycle design, and also applications. In the fundamentals part the discussion about thermodynamics, working pairs, and heat and mass transfer is reflected. Today's discussion on thermodynamic cycles is not very strong. Main focus is on special solid sorption cycles, compressionsorption hybrids, and open cycles, In the applications part the chilling business is the main issue. Some interest is given to the improvement of efficiency on and the adaptation to low temperature waste heat use, but the stress is on the use of solar energy as heat source. The area of heat pumping for heating purposes is less prominent but not at all negligible. Finally, industrial heat pumping involves the reverse cycle (heat transformer, heat pump type Ⅱ) also, but there is no significant activity.

  • Applications of energy harvesting from mechanical vibrations is becoming popular but the full potential of such applications is yet to be explored. This paper addresses this issue by considering an application of energy harvesting for the dual objective of serving as an indicator of structural health monitoring (SHM) and extent of control. Variation of harvested energy from an undamaged baseline is employed for this purpose and the concept is illustrated by implementing it for active vibrations of a pipe structure. Theoretical and experimental analyses are carried out to determine the energy harvesting potential from undamaged and damaged conditions. The use of energy harvesting as indicator for control is subsequently investigated, considering the effect of the introduction of a tuned mass damper (TMD). It is found that energy harvesting can be used for the detection and monitoring of the location and magnitude of damage occurring within a pipe structure. Additionally, the harvested energy acts as an indicator of the extent of reduction of vibration of pipes when a TMD is attached. This paper extends the range of applications of energy harvesting devices for the monitoring of built infrastructure and illustrates the vast potential of energy harvesters as smart sensors.

  • The smart energy system is the integrated power system in which the power components including central station generation, distributed generation, renewable power generation, energy storage, and communications and controls are complexly connected with each other. In smart energy system, it is very important how to configure the diverse power generations and how to determine the operation mode of the chosen components with economic feasibility. In this study, we introduce the optimal planning method based on both economic feasibility and load profiles and its applications for the smart energy system in apartment. This method was considered very useful to determine the configuration and to decide the optimal operation mode of the smart energy system.
