Recently, global railway car makers are competing desperately in developing high-speed railway vehicles. Ensuring passenger safety during a crash is essential. The design and the manufacturing of energy absorbing components are becoming more and more important. A deformation tube is a typical passive energy absorbing component for railway cars. In the current study the slab method was used to predict the energy absorbing capability of a deformation tube during the early design stage. The usefulness of the prediction method is verified through the comparisons between the results of FE simulations and those of the prediction method.

The energy-absorbing characteristic of impact limiters affects the cask design so significantly that it should be evaluated as accurate as possible. The objective of this study is to find the influence of the impact limiter's steel case and gusset plates which enclose the shock absorbing cellular material on the impact energy absorption. The influence of impact limiter's steel case and gusset plate stiffeners on the impact energy absorption behavior under horizontal drop impact was evaluated for a radioactive isotope transport cask. Though the impact limiters mitigate the impact damage of the cask, the impact limiter's steel case and gusset plate stiffeners increase the impact force so significantly that should be designed as soft as possible. The impact analysis without considering impact limiter's steel case and gusset plates stiffener gives non-conservative results, so the stiffness of the steel case and gusset plates should be considered in impact analysis.
Based on the eigenfunction expansion method, the wave-absorbing performance of a square or circular pile breakwater was investigated. Flow separation resulting from sudden contraction and expansion is generated and is the main cause of significant energy loss. Therefore, evaluation of an exact energy loss coefficient is critical to enhancing the reliability of the mathematical model. To obtain the energy loss coefficient, 2-dimensional turbulent flow is analyzed using the FLUENT commercial code, and the energy loss coefficient can be obtained from the pressure difference between upstream and downstream. It was found that energy loss coefficient of circular pile is 20% that of a square pile. To validate the fitting equation for the energy loss coefficient, comparison between the analytical results and the experimental results (Kakuno and Liu, 1993) was made for square and circular piles with good agreement. The array of square piles also provides better wave-absorbing efficiency than the circular piles, and the optimal porosity value is near P=0.1.
The hat shaped section members, spot welded strength resisting structures are the most energy absorbing ones of automobile components during the front-end collision. Under the static axial collapse load in velocity of 10mm/min and quasi-static collapse load in velocity of 1000mm/min, the collapse characteristics of the hat shaped section and double hat shaped section member have been analyzed by axial collapse tests with respect to the variations of spot weld pitches on the flanges. In addition, the quasi-static collapse simulations have been implemented in the same condition to the experiment's using FEM package, LS-DYNA3D. The simulated results have been verified in comparison with these from the quasi-static axial collapse tests. With the computational approaches the optimal energy absorbing structures can be suggested. Simulations are so helpful that the optimized data be supplied in designing vehicles in advance.

Bellows are suggested as energy absorbing elements for automotive steering systems. A metallic bellows has nearly constant axial collapse load which is desirable as an energy absorbing element for a steering column. Axial collapsability and bending flexibility of bellows can be utilized to reduce upward tilting and backward displacement of steering columns in the early stage of high speed crash. Since bending flexibility of bellows has negative effects on the vibration characteristics of steering columns it is necessary to maximize the first natural frequency of a bellows while maintaining its plastic bending flexibility and axial collapse load. An effort is made to attain optimum design of bellows based upon the Taguchi method. A general guideline for design of bellows is suggested.

Wave absorbing system is needed at various kinds of wave basins (wave flume, towing tank, square tank) for the model test related to the ocean engineering. In this paper, the performance of wave absorbing system with new concept is estimated throughout the experiments. Herein, the wave absorbing system is designed by punching plate with a given porosity which is installed horizontally and submerged near the water surface. As the incident wave generated by a wave maker advances above a punching plate, the strong jet flow is formed near a hole of punching plate. As a result, wave energy is dissipated into heat energy, Systematic model tests were conducted at KRISO to verify the performance of the wave absorber using a punching plate. It was found that the reflection coefficient of wave absorber is deeply dependent on both the porosity and the submerged depth of a punching plate. Inclined installation of a punching plate shows better performance than a horizontal one within a certain inclined angle.

The purpose of this study is to develop a sound absorbing material for indoor which manufactured by a clay and binding material. The seven kind of sound absorbing specimens which sintered through a mold process at high temperature were manufactured for the purpose of testing sound absorption performance. The random and normal sound absorption coefficients were measured for the sintered clay sound absorbing specimens with different particle size, density and mixture ratio. From the experimental results, it was found that its particle size was closely related to the sound absorption performance. It was shown that the sintered clay sound absorbing specimen had the sound absorption properties of a fiber-type or a resonance-type sound absorbing material depending on the particle size.
This paper proposes a multi absorbing wave energy converter design, in which a hydrostatic transmission is used to transfer wave energy to electric energy. The most important feature of this system is its combination of the pressure coupling principle with the use of a hydraulic accumulator to eliminate the effects of wave power fluctuation; this maintains a constant speed of the hydraulic motor. Tilt motion of a floating buoy was employed as the power take-off mechanism. Furthermore, a PID controller was designed to carry out the speed control of the hydraulic motor. The design offers some advantages such as extending the life of the hydraulic components, increasing the amount of energy harvested, and stabilizing the output speed.

This paper presents development of an special metal hydride(SMH) actuator system using a peltier module. The newly developed simple SMH actuator, consisting of the plated hydrogen-absorbing alloy as a power source, Peltier elements as a heat source and a cylinder with metal bellows as a functioning part, has been developed. The SMH actuator is characterized by its small size, low weight, noiseless operation and a compliance similar to that of human body. A new SMH actuator that uses reversible reactions between the heat energy and mechanical energy of a hydrogen absorbing alloy. It is well known that hydrogen-absorbing alloys can reversibly absorb and desorb a large amount of hydrogen, more than about 1000 times of their own volume. To improve the thermal conductivity of the hydrogen-absorbing alloy, an electro-less copper plating has been carried out. For this purpose, the effects of the electro-less copper plating and the dynamic characteristics of the SMH actuator have been studied. The hydrogen equilibrium pressure increases and hydrogen is desorbed by heating the hydrogen-absorbing alloys, whereas by cooling the alloys, the hydrogen equilibrium pressure decreases and hydrogen is absorbed. The SMH actuator has the characteristic of being light and easy to use. Therefore, it is suitable for medical and rehabilitation applications.

The simple SMH actuator, consisting of the plated hydrogen-absorbing alloys as a power source, Peltier elements as a heat source, and a cylinder with metal bellows as a functioning part has been developed. To improve the thermal conductivity of the hydrogen-absorbing alloy, an assembly of copper pipes has been used. It is well known that hydrogen-absorbing alloys can reversibly absorb and desorb a large amount of hydrogen, more than about 1000 times of their own volume. The hydrogen equilibrium pressure increases when hydrogen is desorbed by heating of the hydrogen-absorbing alloys, whereas by cooling the alloys, the hydrogen equilibrium pressure decreases and hydrogen is absorbed. The new special metal hydride (SMH) actuator uses the reversible reaction between the heat energy and mechanical energy of a hydrogen absorbing alloys. The desirable characteristics of SMH actuator, which makes it suitable for the uses in medical and rehabilitation applications, have been also studied. For this purpose, the characteristics of the new SMH actuator for different temperature, pressure, and external load were explored.
