  • External corrosion of buried pipes can be controlled using both coating and cathodic protection. However, deterioration of the coating can occur due to several reasons. The detection reliabilty of coating flaw detection methods is affected by interference such as metal objects connected to rectifiers and copper grids. When performing parallel direct current voltage gradient (DCVG) inspection, a sine wave form without potential reversal in voltage gradient appears in the area where the interference exists. However, this area may be not identified using existing methods. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of analyzing direction on the reliability of coating flaw detection of pipes buried in soil using a multi-electrode detector. DCVG on the buried pipe was measured along the buried pipe. This measurement parallel to the pipe was repeated. Measured data were analyzed for parallel, vertical, and diagonal directions. The reliability of coating flaw detection was improved by up to 46.4% compared to the conventional method.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the influences of the water fluoride concentration on the growth changes, the histologic characteristics of osteoblast in the tibia of growing newborn rats by using electron microscopy and on the composition changes of bone matrix in those by using energy dispersive x-ray system (EDX). The water fluoride concentration was respectively 0 ppm (contrast group), 100 ppm (100 ppm group), 200 ppm (200 ppm group) and 300 ppm (300 ppm group). The results of the investigation by using electron microscopy were as followed. In contrast group, the traditional cuboidal osteoblasts were observed. In 100 ppm group, several reversal line, the newly formed osteoid by the strongly activated osteoblast and the well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria in cytoplasm of osteoblast were observed. Also, many secretory vesicle around cell membrane were observed and some fused with cell membrane released secretory granule out of cell. In 200 ppm group, the depressed osteoblasts were observed, mitochondria in cytoplasm were expanded and cristae shape in mitochondria were destroyed. Also, the ribosome at the surface of rough endoplasmic reticulum were not observed. In 300 ppm group, the adjacent osteoblasts with endosteum were irregularly arranged, the cell membrane were destroyed and organelles were flowed out of cell. On the other hand, the results of the investigation by using energy dispersive x-ray system were as followed. P and Ca concentrations in 100 ppm group were increased more than those in contrast group. But, in 200 and 300 ppm group were not increased more than those in 100 ppm group. Therefore, the activities of the osteoblasts were increased, the bone matrix were actively synthesized by the supplied water fluoride. But, the osteoblasts were destroyed, inhibited by the higher water fluoride concentration.

  • We performed macro-spin simulation studies of the current-induced magnetization reversal of nanomagnetic elements with short current pulses. A special attention was paid to the effect of the energy barrier on the switching current distribution. The switching current and its distribution increase with decreasing the current pulse-width. The relationship between the energy barrier and switching current distribution is described by the Arrhenius-N$\'{e}$el law at a long pulse-width regime. At a regime of short pulse-width, however, the relationship is left unaddressed. The difficulty to address this issue arises because the magnetization switching with a short current pulse is governed not by the thermal activation but by the precession motion. Therefore, an exact formulation for the short pulse regime by solving the Fokker-Plank equation is needed to understand the result.

  • Ball reducer (HERB Drive: High Efficient Wave Rolling Ball Drive) with waved grooves has many advantages over other types of reducers for high-reduction ratio, low noise and low energy loss, etc. The mechanism of force transmission is very similar to that of cam and follower in automobile valve train system especially in contact behaviors. In this study, we have investigated the traces of contact between ball and outer ring, and the dynamic contact behaviors of elastohydodynamic lubrication(EHL) with a certain reduction ratio. In order to verify the contact behaviors between ball and outer ring for the critical endurance lift, the contact velocity and load are computed for a cycle. During some intervals of a cycle, the contact velocity reverses its direction very suddenly. It is expected that changing the contact direction causes undesirable endurance performance because EHL film frequently col lapse at the moment of velocity reversal. From the computational investigation in this work, we hope to predict similar contact damages in other machinery due to this kind of contact behaviors, which is very typical in many contact phenomena.

  • We examined the relations between CME speed and properties of magnetic helicity in the source region such as helicity injection rate and total unsigned magnetic flux, which reflect the magnetic energy in the active region. For this, we selected 22 CMEs occurred during the increasing phase of solar cycle 24, which shows extremely low activities and classified them into two groups according to evolution pattern of helicity injection rate. We then compared the relations with those from previous study based on the events in solar cycle 23. As the results, we found several properties as follows: (1) Both of CME speed and helicity parameters have very small values since we only considered increasing phase; (2) among 22 CMEs, only 6 events (27%) are classified as group B, which show sign reversal of helicity injection and they follow behind of appearance of group A events. This fact is well coincide with the trend of solar cycle 23 that only group A events was observed in the first 3 years of the period; (3) as the solar activity is increasing, the CME speed and helicity parameters are also increasing. Based on the observations of solar cycle 23, the helicity parameters was still increasing in spite of decreasing solar activity after maximum period.

  • Spin dynamics has been investigated intensively in various kinds of fields. Most popular one is an initial permeability at high frequency. Also, magnetic after-effect such as thermal fluctuation of fine magnetic particles and disaccommodation in soft magnetic materials were extensively studied in the past. When we apply an external farce with the same frequency as that of the system being examined, the system absorbs the external energy and the precession enhances. It is called resonance in general. Among the various resonances, ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) has been used as a good tool to evaluate material constants such as saturation manetization or spin damping parameter by analyzing a resonance curve. In this talk first instinctive understanding of Gilbert spin damping and spin pumping will be explained. Then, experimental data for enhancement of Gilbert damping parameter (G) evaluated from FMR spectrum and spin precession measured by a time resolved pump-probe method for Permalloy thin film will be introduced. Finally, magnetization reversal observed by air-coplanar probe will be given.

  • In this paper calculations of magnetisation and magnetoresistance characteristics of the Spin Valve (SV) and Pseudo Spin Valve (PSV) spintronics structures are reported and compared with the experimental data. The magnetisation reversal process was analysed with respect to the Stoner- Wohlfahrt model of total surface energy in terms of uniaxial anisotropy, exchange coupling between ferromagnetic layers, unidirectional exchange anisotropy of pinned layer (modelled by exchange coupling between magnetisation of pinned layer and net magnetisation of antiferromagnetic layer with high anisotropy). The numerical simulation of the model to the experimental magnetisation data yielded the above parameters for SV and PSV structures. These parameters were used to more sophistically micromagnetic modelling tool originating from the project called Object Oriented Micromagnetic Framework. Influence of the shape anisotropy of the Magnetic Tunnelling Junction cell used in MRAM was simulated by means of micromagnetic simulations. Results were compared to those obtained from the spot Kerr measurements.

  • Equilibrium relations between garnet and orthopyroxene have been investigated by reversal experiments in the range of 20-45Kb and $975-1400^{\circ}C$ in the $FeO-MgO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$(FMAS) system. A mixture of PbO with about 55 mol per cent $PbF_2$ was used as a flux and proved very effective. The Fe-Mg exchange reaction seems to have little or no compositional dependence at these conditions. Combination of the experimental results with the garnet mixing model of Ganguly and Saxena(1984) yields the following geothermometric expression for the common natural assemblages that can be represented essentially within the system $FeO-MgO-CaO-MnO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$. $$T^{\circ}C=(1971+11.91P(Kb)+1510(X_{Ca}+X_{Mn})^{Gt}/(lnK_D+0.96)-273$$.

  • Recently, much power demand from domestic power consumer is weakening the allowable power reserve margin in summer, especially at midday for one day due to a steep increase of air cooling loads such as air conditioner. Therefore solar airconditioning system can'be considered as one of the best remedies to meet the increase of peak power. Generally in solar air conditioning system, the diode rectifier is used to build up DC link voltage from AC source. The diode rectifier is simple and cheap but it brings out the problems of low power factor and plentiful harmonics at the AC source. Also It can derate the utilization rate of solar energy because the reverse of power flow cannot be made. Hence, in this paper to overcome the peak power problem in summer and to endure good AC input characteristics, solar air conditioning system using the PWM converter is proposed. As results, obtained are the characteristics of the PWM converter such as low distorted current waveform, high power factor and bidirectional power control. And also the stability of proposed system is verified by examining the dynamics of step load change and power reversal testing. (author). refs., figs., tabs.

  • We demonstrated memory thin-film transistors (MTFTs) with organic ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) and an amorphous oxide semiconducting indium gallium zinc oxide channel on the elastomeric substrate. The dielectric constant for the P(VDF-TrFE) thin film prepared on the elastomeric substrate was calculated to be 10 at a high frequency of 1 MHz. The voltage-dependent capacitance variations showed typical butterfly-shaped hysteresis behaviors owing to the polarization reversal in the film. The carrier mobility and memory on/off ratio of the MTFTs showed $15cm^2V^{-1}s^{-1}$ and $10^6$, respectively. This result indicates that the P(VDF-TrFE) film prepared on the elastomeric substrate exhibits ferroelectric natures. The fabricated MTFTs exhibited sufficiently encouraging device characteristics even on the elastomeric substrate to realize mechanically stretchable nonvolatile memory devices.
