In this study, extraction of uranium(VI) from an aqueous nitric acid solution was investigated using tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) as an extractant in an ionic liquid, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Cnmim][Tf2N]). The distribution ratio of U(VI) in 1.1 M TBP/[Cnmim][Tf2N] was significantly high when the concentration of nitric acid was low. The value of the distribution ratio decreased as the concentration of the nitric acid increased at lower acidities, and then increased with a nitric acid concentration of up to 8 M. This can be attributed to the different extraction mechanisms of U(VI) based on nitric acid concentrations. Thus, a cation exchange at low acidity levels and an ion-pair extraction at high acidity levels were suggested as the extraction mechanism of U(VI) in the TBP/[Cnmim][Tf2N] system.

The oceans are an untapped resource, capable of making a major contribution to our future energy needs. In the search for a non polluting renewable energy source, there is a push to find an economical way to harness energy from the ocean. Tidal stream is one of ocean energy form that is being investigated as potential source for power generation. Tidal current turbines are therefore designed as conversion machinery to generate power from tidal currents. A study on energy extraction from tidal currents is presented in this paper.
Wind speeds can vary rapidly and wind turbines cannot easily follow these variations because of their inertia and aerodynamic characteristics. For maximum energy extraction. the turbine blades should operate at their optimum tip speed ratio, but with rapid changes in wind speed. this is usually not possible. To improve the energy extraction from turbulent wind, it is necessary to establish an effective measure of the high frequency component of the wind. and then to use this measure to optimise the operation of the turbine controller for maximum energy extraction. This paper presents an approach for combining readings from three anemometers into a composite wind speed measurement. and using this signal to control the operation of a permanent magnet generator to achieve maximum energy extraction. The method combines simulation and experimental investigations into a heuristic algorithm. and demonstrates its effectiveness with field trials.
A method is described for the determination of the Po nuclides in a water sample. After the Po nuclides were purified from interfering elements in a water sample using a manganese dioxide precipitation followed by a solvent extraction method, the Po nuclides were deposited onto the silver plate. A large volume of the water sample was effectively pretreated with manganese dioxide precipitation method. To determine the optimum conditions for plating Po, the effects of the pH, volume, temperature and time on the Po deposition were investigated in hydrochloric acid solution. The investigated determination method of Po nuclides with solvent extraction was applied to a tap water sample.
This study was carried out to develop an efficient process far the elimination of phenol pollutant from soils. An microwave-assisted process (MAP) and a conventional Soxhlet extraction method (SEM) were employed to extract phenol from two types of soils. The effects of extraction methods, aged time of the spiked soil samples, extraction solvent and extraction time on the extraction performance were compared. Our results demonstrate that the recoveries from standard soil spiked were at least 10% higher fer MAP than these f3r the conventional Soxhlet. The extraction time by MAP requires significantly shelter time (1 min) than 15 h of the conventional Soxhlet. The recoveries from non-contaminated soil spiked with phenol were also almost identical f3r above results. The reduction of the extraction times with efficiency higher than that afforded by the conventional Soxhlet technique supports the suitability of the MAP method.
This study was carried out to investigate the high-acidity co-separation of Am and RE from a simulated radwaste solution by a solvent extraction using a mixture of Dimethyldibutyltetradecylmalonamide (DMDBTDMA, as an extractant) and dihexyl octanamide (DHOA, as a phase modifier) diluted with n-dodecane (NDD). All the experiments were conducted as a batch type. First, the environmentally friendly DMDBTDMA and DHOA composed of only CHON atoms were self-synthesized. Then, the conditions for the prevention of a third phase, generated in the organic phase were examined. In addition, the effects of the concentration of nitric acid, DHOA, oxalic acid and $H_2O_2$ on the co-extraction of Am and RE were elucidated. Consequently, the optimum condition of (0.5M DMDBTDMA+0.5M DHOA)/NDD-0.3M $C_2H_2O_4-4.5M$$HNO_3$ and O/A=2 was obtained through experimental work. Under this condition, the extraction yields were found to be about 80% for Am, more than 70% for RE such as La, Eu, Nd, Ce, etc., 3% for Cs and Sr, 69% for Fe and less than 11% for Mo and Ru. For the co-extraction of Am and RE, Fe should be removed in advance or prevented from a co-extraction with Am by controlling the different extraction rates of Am and Fe. About 95% of the Am and RE in the organic phase were stripped using a 0.5M $HNO_3$.
We investigate the performance of multi-body wave energy converters (WECs). This investigation considers multiple scattering of water waves by the buoys of a WEC under the generalized mode approach. Predominantly, the effect of a WEC's configuration on its energy extraction is studied in this research. First, single-row terminator and single-column attenuator arrays of vertical cylinders have been studied. The performance of these attenuator arrays shows that the wall effect induced by the periodic buoys influences the wave propagation and energy extraction in these WECs. Further studies show that a single-row terminator array of vertical cylinders performs better than the corresponding single-column attenuator array. Subsequently, multi-row terminator arrays of vertical cylinders are investigated by conducting a parametric study. This parametric study shows that the hydrodynamic property of three resonance phenomena makes energy extraction efficiency drop down, and the magnitude of energy extracted oscillates between the resonance points in these WECs. Finally, a 4×8 terminator array of vertical cylinders is studied to determine the effect of various dx (x-directional distance between adjacent rows) within this WEC on its performance. In particular, this study enforces at least two equal dx values within the 4×8 terminator array of vertical cylinders. It shows that a small value of this dx leads to better energy extraction efficiency in some of these various dx arrays than that of a corresponding regular array with the same dx.

A low energy ion irradiation system based on the deuterium arc ion source with a high perveance of 1 µP for a single extraction aperture has been successfully developed for the investigation of ion irradiation on plasma-facing components including the first mirror of plasma optical diagnostics system. Under the optimum operating condition for mirror testing, the ion source has a beam energy of 200 eV and a current density of 3.7 mA/cm2. The ion source comprises a magnetic cusp-type plasma source, an extraction system, a target system with a Faraday cup, and a power supply control system to ensure stable long time operation. Operation parameters of plasma source such as pressure, filament current, and arc power with D2 discharge gas were optimized for beam extraction by measuring plasma parameters with a Langmuir probe. The diode electrode extraction system was designed by IGUN simulation to optimize for 1 µP perveance. It was successfully demonstrated that the ion beam current of ~4 mA can be extracted through the 10 mm aperture from the developed ion source. The target system with the Faraday cup is also developed to measure the beam current. With the assistance of the power control system, ion beams are extracted while maintaining a consistent arc power for more than 10 min of continuous operation.
Various single solvents were tested to find the effective solvent for the extraction of algae oil from wet-form Chlorella minutissima. In the case of single solvents, their extractabilities for algae oil were increased with their polarity because the water in wet algae cell is to form a solvent shell around the lipids. Based on these results, the wet-form algae samples were treated with a polar alcohol solvent and then a nonpolar solvent was added in algae residue. In the algae oil extraction by ethanol/n-hexane, total lipid contents were 40-50% and composition of triglyceride in extracted oil was 46.50%. Considering solvent toxicity of conventional solvent mixture such as chloroform and methanol for algae oil extraction, the ethanol/n-hexane system was identified as the effective one for the oil extraction from wet-form Chlorella minutissima.

The changes of Np oxidation state in nitric acid and the effect of nitrous acid on the oxidation state were analyzed by spectrophotometry, solvent extraction, and electrochemical methods. An enhancement of Np extraction to 30 vol.% TBP was carried out through adjustment of Np oxidation state by using a glassy carbon fiber column electrode system. The information of electrolytic behavior of nitric acid was important because the nitrous acid affecting the Np redox reaction was generated during the electrolytic adjustment of the Np oxidation state. The Np solution used in this work consisted of Np(V) and Np(Ⅵ)without (IV). The composition of Np(V) in the range of 0.5M -5.5 M nitric acid was 32% ~ 19%. The electrolytic oxidation of Np(V) to Np(Ⅵ)in the solution enhanced Np extraction efficiency about five times higher than the case without the electrolytic oxidation. It was confirmed that the nitrous acid of less than about 10-5 M acted as a catalyst to accelerate the chemical oxidation reaction of Np(V) to Np(Ⅵ).
