  • Integrated RFID-WSNs (wireless sensor networks) have recently been researched to provide object identities, sensing information, mobile service, and network functionalities. In integrated RFID-WSNs, the reader collision is one of the critical problems. Above all, due to the absence of universally applicable anti-collision protocols and the channel capture phenomenon, the medium access control protocols in integrated RFID-WSNs suffer from reader collision and starvation problems. In this paper, we propose an efficient MAC protocol, called EMP, to avoid the above problems in integrated RFID-WSNs. EMP is a CSMA-based MAC protocol which is compatible with sensor networks operating on integrated nodes which consist of an RFID reader and a senor node. EMP resolves not only the reader collision problem, but also the starvation problem using a power control mechanism. To verify the performance of EMP, we compared it with other anti-reader collision MAC protocols using simulations. As a result, the performance of EMP showed improvements in throughput, system efficiency, and energy consumption compared to the single data channel protocols (CSMA/CA, Pulse, and DiCa) in dense deployment environments.

  • Although mobile applications are an essential characteristic of wireless sensor networks, most existing media access control (MAC) protocols focus primarily on static networks. In these protocols, fixed periodic neighbor discovery and schedule updating are used to connect and synchronize neighbors to provide successful data transmission; however, they cannot adapt to mobile speed variation and degrade the network performance dramatically. In this paper, we propose a mobile-supporting mechanism for MAC protocols, in which the decision to update the neighbors of a mobile node is made adaptively according to the mobile speed. Analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the mechanism efficiently avoids the disconnection of amobile node from its neighbors and achieves a better performance as compared with fixed periodic neighbor discovery.

  • Sensor nodes have various energy and computational constraints because of their inexpensive nature and ad-hoc method of deployment. Considerable research has been focused at overcoming these deficiencies through faster media accessing, more energy efficient routing, localization algorithms and system design. Our research attempts to provide a method of improvement MAC performance in these issues. We show that traditional carrier-sense multiple access(CSMA) protocols like IEEE 802.11 do not handle the first constraint adequately, and do not take advantage of the second property, leading to degraded latency and throughput as the network scales in size, We present more efficient method of a medium access for real-time wireless sensor networks. Proposed MAC protocol is a randomized CSMA protocol, but unlike previous legacy protocols, does not use a time-varying contention window from which a node randomly picks a transmission slot. To reduce the latency for the delivery of event reports, it carefully decides a fixed-size contention window, non-uniform probability distribution of transmitting in each slot within the window. We show that it can offer up to several times latency reduction compared to legacy of IEEE 802.11 as the size of the sensor network scales up to 256 nodes using widely used simulator ns-2. We, finally show that proposed MAC scheme comes close to meeting bounds on the best latency achievable by a decentralized CSMA-based MAC protocol for real-time wireless sensor networks which is sensitive to latency.

  • Finding an energy efficient route is one of the very important issues in the wireless sensor networks. The route scheme should consider both of the energy level of sensor nodes and the number of hops at the same time. First of all, this paper proposes an optimum routes finding scheme (ORFS), which could be used in the sensor network routing protocols. The scheme uses an optimum value for the path with the considerations of both the minimum energy level of a path and the number of hops at the same time. After that, this paper proposes a routing protocol based on the ORFS for how it could be used for the multipath directed diffusion with data aggregation (MDD-A), to get the better energy efficiency. The analysis result shows that the proposed routing protocol could lengthen the network life cycle about 18.7% compared to the previous MDD-A related protocols.

  • Sensors have limited resources in sensor networks, so efficient use of energy is important. In order to use the energy of the sensor node efficiently, researches applying mobile sink to the sensor network have been actively carried out. The sink node moves the sensor network, collects data from each sensor node, which spread the energy concentrated around the sink node, thereby extending the entire life cycle of the network. But, when the sink node moves, it requires a reset of the data transmission path, which causes a lot of control messages and delays. In this paper, we propose a CMS(Cluster-based Mobile Sink) method to support the movement of mobile sink in a cluster sensor environment. The proposed scheme minimizes an amount of control messages without resetting the routing paths of entire sensor networks by supporting the sink mobility path using the neighbor cluster list. And, it simplifies the routing path setup process by setting a single hop path between clusters without a gateway. The experiment results show that the proposed scheme has superior energy efficiency in processing and network structure, compared with existing clustering and mesh routing protocols.

  • This paper proposes Co-MAC (Coexistence MAC), an energy efficient medium access control protocol designed for large-scale sensor networks. In Co-MAC protocol, an overall network is divided into independent subnets, and each subnet orthogonally operates on time line in a temporal fashion. The basic idea of Co-MAC is to evenly distribute sensor nodes in a certain geographic area based on subnets to minimize overhearing which means the reception of unnecessary data packets from neighboring nodes. In our simulation, it was observed that energy efficiency of Co-MAC outperforms conventional MAC protocols under the given conditions.

  • In wireless sensor networks, data dissemination protocols have been proposed for mobile sink groups that are characterized by geographically staying closely and collective movement. They usually exploit flooding technology for mobility supporting and data delivery guarantee. However, it causes the excessive energy consumption of all sensor nodes in the group region due to data delivery participation. Moreover, the costs of the flooding would become higher in proportional to the group region. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient data dissemination scheme that resolves these problems. The virtual infrastructure called a 'pipe' is used as a rendezvous area. A source delivers data to the pipe, from which member sinks in the group retrieve it directly. Simulation results showed that this solution has better performance than existing protocols in terms of energy consumption as it reduces the number of regional flooding and eliminates unnecessary data flooding.

  • Various on-demand manner routing protocols have been proposed for efficient energy consumption in mobile ad-hoc networks. Some of the protocols tried to extend the network lifetime by periodically rerouting paths according to the energy consumption rate of nodes. However, those protocols suffer from frequent flooding and high overhead. This paper proposed a new routing protocol called ALPMR (Adaptive Local Path Modification Routing) that extends the network lifetime by using local path rerouting. The proposed ALPMR protocol performs local rerouting around nodes with little remaining energy as well as data congestion, thus reduces flooding and routing overhead and can extend the network lifetime. The performance of ALPMR protocol is observed using ns-2 simulator.

  • In Wireless Sensor Network, various routing protocols were employed by our Research and Development community to improve the energy efficiency of a network as well as to control the traffic by considering the terms, i.e. Packet delivery rate, the average end-to-end delay, network routing load, average throughput, and total energy consumption. While maintaining network connectivity for a long-term duration, it's necessary that routing protocol must perform in an efficient way. As we discussed Optimized Link State Routing protocol between all of them, we find out that this protocol performs well in the large and dense networks, but with the decrease in network size then scalability of the network decreases. Whenever a link breakage is encountered, OLSR is not able to periodically update its routing table which may create a redundancy problem. To resolve this issue in the OLSR problem of redundancy and predict link breakage, an enhanced protocol, i.e. S-OLSR (More Scalable OLSR) protocol has been proposed. At the end, a comparison among different existing protocols, i.e. DSR, AODV, OLSR with the proposed protocol, i.e. S-OLSR is drawn by using the NS-2 simulator.
