  • Photoaligning polymers usually possess "sofe" surface, containing flexible groups and provide relatively small anchoring energy($W<10^{-2}$ erg $cm^{-2}$). In this case field-induced reorientation of director on the aligning surface is essential. We have shown that surface director reorientation can modify the aligning surface and result in gliding of the axis of easy orientation of LC. this phenomena together with adsorption/desorption of ions in electric field cause strong sticking effect in LCDs photoaligning materials. We proposed a method of decreasing of the sticking effect based on irradiation of the photoaligning surface by an unpolarized light.

  • We would like to show a measuring technique of azimuthal anchoring energy of the nematic liquid crystals. The electro-optical setup of liquid crystal cell, crossed polarizers and magnetic field was assumed. The planar or hybrid alignment cells were prepared. The director in the light entering substrate and the polarization of light was adjusted into parallel to the magnetic field. The director orientation of exit substrate and analyser maintained perpendicular to the magnetic field. As the magnetic field strength is increased, the director deviates from the easy axis and rotates to the field direction. We obtained an equation calculating the change of transmission with the field and measured experimentally the transmission. By comparing the calculating and experimental data, we obtained the azimuthal anchoring strength.

  • We have studied improvement of light leakage of twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) in dark state using the hybrid aligned compensation film made of rod-like LC. When the voltage is applied properly to the TN-LCD, the director tilts up but LC director on the substrate don't tilts up due to surface anchoring energy of the LC cell. Accordingly, LC director from surface to middle LC of TN -LCD become hybrid state such as hybrid aligned film. Consequently, in this paper we achieve wide viewing angle performances of TN mode using developed hybrid aligned film which especially decreases light leakage at vertical direction in dark state.

  • This paper reports a methodology and application lot calculating distribution of the director in a liquid crystal cell by a numerical technique. To calculate distribution of the director, we applied a three dimensional finite element method (FEM) and calculated the distributions of electric potential and director in the liquid crystal cell. We have considered the free-energy density in the bulk of liquid crystal cell and calculated the switching property by the Ericksen-Leslie equation and the Laplace equation. We have calculated the optical transmission with distribution of the director by Berreman's method and confirmed the threshold voltage and the response time.

  • We studied the anchoring properties in photo-aligned periodic domains of liquid crystals (LCs) in an alternating homeotropic and hybrid geometry. In this geometry, the surface anchoring energy was determined in using the director-distorted length of the LC near domain boundary, calculated in a linear approximation of the director profile within the continuum theory. The measurements were made using the LC diffraction grating with the phase profile in the form of a trapezoid.

  • This paper reports a methodology for calculating distribution of the director in an In-plane switching liquid crystal cell by a numerical technique. To calculate distribution of the director, we developed a three dimensional finite element method (FEM) and calculated the distribution of electric potential and electric field in the liquid crystal cell. We have considered the free-energy density composed of electric potential and strain energy in the bulk of liquid crystal cell and calculated the switching property of liquid crystal cell by the Ericksen-Leslie equation and the Laplace equation We generated 1,859 nodes and 8,640 elements for IPS mode cell with 24${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$\times$12${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$\times$4.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and performed transient analysis until 16ms. As a result, horizontal electric field occurred at cell region except liquid crystal region above electrodes and the disclination occured on electrodes.

  • A modeling of the nucleation and dynamical behavior of defects from an inhomogeneous surface configuration using fast Q-tensor method is realized. On modeling the defect nucleation and dynamics, A fast Q-tensor method is applied. From the numerical modeling, we confirmed that surface inhomogeneity which makes strong strain energy in the local liquid crystal director field could cause defects. Experimental result has compared with numerical modeling in order to verify the simulation of the defect nucleation.
