An RF energy detector for spectrum sensing in TV white space transceiver is presented. It is based on an RF active filtering technique that comprises a low-noise amplifier with a frequency-translation high-pass filtering feedfoward loop, which attenuates the unwanted sideband energy and only passes the wanted band energy. Unlike the conventional architecture, a new architecture that can attenuate both sidebands at the same time is proposed. A simplified system modeling method is presented to assess the non-ideality effects on the RF energy detector performances. System behavioral simulations demonstrate that the proposed architecture can be instrumental for realizaing a RF energy detector circuit in CMOS.

In this paper, we describe the results of various calculations performed for a design of the thickness gauges that use the gamma-ray backscattering method. The radiation source is assumed to be the $_{24}$1Am(60keV gamma-ray) and the detector is a single crystal scintillator in a cylindrical form. The source is located at the center of the detector with the collimator of a cylindrical shape. First, when gamma-rays are incident on a material with a constant angle, we compute the variations of the spectrum for the photons scattered into different angular intervals. Next, we compute for an optimal size for the collimator cylinder for a fixed detector size and an optimal distance from the detector to the material. Finally, we compute the number of observed photons for different thickness of two different materials, a plastic film and an Al foil.
In this study, 3" × 3" NaI(Tl) detector, which is widely used in gamma spectroscopy, was modeled with FLUKA code, and calculations required to determine the detector's energy resolution were reported. Photon beams with isotropic distribution with 59, 81, 302, 356, 511, 662, 835, 1173, 1275, and 1332 keV energy were used as radiation sources. The photon pulse height distribution of the NaI(Tl) without influence of its energy resolution obtained with FLUKA code has been converted into a real NaI(Tl) response function, using the necessary conversion process. The photon pulse height distribution simulated in the conversion process was analyzed using the ROOT data analysis framework. The statistical errors of the simulated data were found in the range of 0.2-1.1%. When the results, obtained with FLUKA and ROOT, are compared with the literature data, it is seen that the results are in good agreement with them. Thus, the applicability of this procedure has been demonstrated for the other energy values mentioned.
Energy-resolved neutron imaging is an effective way to investigate the internal structure and residual stress of materials. Different sample sizes have varying requirements for the detector's imaging field of view (FOV) and spatial resolution. Therefore, a dual-mode energy-resolved neutron imaging detector was developed, which mainly consisted of a neutron scintillator screen, a mirror, imaging lenses, and a time-stamping optical fast camera. This detector could operate in a large FOV mode or a high spatial resolution mode. To evaluate the performance of the detector, the neutron wavelength spectra and the multiple spatial resolution tests were conducted at CSNS. The results demonstrated that the detector accurately measured the neutron wavelength spectra selected by a bandwidth chopper. The best spatial resolution was about 20 ㎛ in high spatial resolution mode after event reconstruction, and a FOV of 45.0 mm × 45.0 mm was obtained in large FOV mode. The feasibility was validated to change the spatial resolution and FOV by replacing the scintillator screen and adjusting the lens magnification.

The accuracy of DXA(Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) highly depends on the detection and separation capability of dual energy X-ray X-ray photons. In addition both of scan time and patient exposure are affected by detection efficiency. A CZT detector with a good energy resolution and high detection efficiency was evaluated for the application of bone densitometry. Its performance was compared to a photomultiplier tube with a NaI(T1) scintillator in terms of energy resolution, detection efficiency and the accuracy of bone mineral density measurement. The comparison study was performed with CZT detector and PM tube using DXA equipments(OSTEO Plus, OSTEO Prima, ISOL Technology). The energy spectrum was acquired using MCA(Multi-Channel Analyzer). The used X-ray energy ranged from 20keV to 86keV. The MCA result of the CZT detector showed a slightly sharper energy spectrum than that of NaI(T1). Detection efficiency of the CZT detector at 59.5keV was 1.4 times better. Remarkably the final results of bone mineral density measurements demonstrate only less than 1% difference. The CZT detector appears to have many benefits for the application of bone densitometry. Its excellent energy resolution can enhance the counting accuracy of dual energy X-ray spectrum. Furthermore its compactness in physical dimension and no cooling requirement will be additional benefits for a more compact and accurate bone densitometer.

We have developed a new heavy ion CT detector system for the use of a fan beam. The system consists of two sets of a position sensitive detector and an energy detector. The calibration runs were carried out using a $\^$12/C beam of 1mm in diameter with the energies of 290 MeV/u, 254.5 MeV/u, and 215.8 MeV/u. The spatial resolution of 1.1 mm and the energy resolution of about 1% were achieved.

The response property of the CZT detector ($5{\times}5{\times}5\;mm^3$), widely used in photon spectroscopy, was evaluated by considering the charge collection efficiency, which depends on the interaction position of incident radiation, A quantitative analysis of the energy spectra obtained from the CZT detector was also performed to investigate the tail effect at the low energy side of the full energy peak. The collection efficiency of electrons and holes to the two electrodes (i.e., cathode and anode) was calculated from the Hecht equation, and radiation transport analysis was performed by two Monte Carlo codes, Geant4 and MCNPX. The radiation source was assumed to be 59.5 keV gamma rays emitted from a $^{241}Am$ source into the cathode surface of this detector, and the detector was assumed to be biased to 500 V between the two electrodes. Through the comparison of the results between the Geant4 calculation considering the charge collection efficiency and the ideal case from MCNPX, an pronounced difference of 4 keV was found in the full energy peak position. The tail effect at the low energy side of the full energy peak was confirmed to be caused by the collection efficiency of electrons and holes. In more detail, it was shown that the tail height caused by the charge collection efficiency went up to 1000 times the pulse height in the same energy bin at the calculation without considering the charge collection efficiency. It is, therefore, apparent that research considering the charge collection efficiency is necessary in order to properly analyze the characteristics of CZT detectors.
The COREA (COsmic ray Research and Education Array in Korea) project aims to build a ground array of particle detectors distributed over Korean Peninsular, through collaborations of high school students, educators, and university researchers, in order to study the origin of ultra high energy cosmic rays. COREA array will consist of about 2000 detector stations covering several hundreds of $km^2$ area at its final configuration and detect electrons and muons in extensive air-showers triggered by high energy particles. During the intial phase COREA array will start with a small number of detector stations in Seoul area schools. In this paper, we have studied by Monte Carlo simulations how to select detector sites for optimal detection efficiency for proton triggered air-showers. We considered several model clusters with up to 30 detector stations and calculated the effective number of air-shower events that can be detected per year for each cluster. The greatest detection efficiency is achieved when the mean distance between detector stations of a cluster is comparable to the effective radius of the air-shower of a given proton energy. We find the detection efficiency of a cluster with randomly selected detector sites is comparable to that of clusters with uniform detector spacing. We also considered a hybrid cluster with 60 detector stations that combines a small cluster with ${\Delta}{\iota}{\approx}100m$ and a large cluster with ${Delta}{\iota}{\approx}1km$. We suggest that it can be an ideal configuration for the initial phase study of the COREA project, since it can measure the cosmic rays with a wide range energy, i.e., $10^{16}eV{\leq}E{\leq}10^{19}eV$, with a reasonable detection rate.
Background: For an accelerator-based BNCT, we have fabricated a new detector consisting of quartz optical fibers that have excellent radiation-resistant characteristics. Materials and Methods: The developed detectors were irradiated at Kyoto University Research Reactor. Results and Discussion: The experimental results showed that the new detector had good output linearity for the neutron intensity, and the response of the new detector did not decrease during the irradiation. Conclusion: The new detector consisting of quartz optical fibers can be applied to measurement of neutron field of an accelerator-based BNCT.
