The Nutritive Values in Different Varieties of Corn Planted in One Location Fed to Growing Pigs over Three Consecutive Years

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of variety and planting year on the nutritive values of corn fed to growing pigs. Four corn varieties examined in this experiment were planted in the same village located in Longhua County, Heibei Province, China, in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively. During each year, corn was hand-harvested in early October and sun dried to about 14% moisture content. Three batches of twenty-four barrows ($33.27{\pm}4.30$, $31.88{\pm}2.93$, $34.21{\pm}3.81kg$ body wight [BW] in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively) were used and allotted to a complete block design with 4 diets and 6 replicate pigs per diet. Pigs were individually placed in metabolic crates. The four experimental diets were formulated by mixing each variety of corn and vitamins and minerals, respectively. A five-day collection period followed a seven-day diet acclimation period. The results indicated that variety of corn significantly influenced the available energy content (digestible energy [DE] on dry matter basis, p<0.05; metabolizable energy (ME) on dry matter basis, p<0.05, respectively), and the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of organic matter (p<0.01), dry matter (p<0.05), gross energy (p<0.05), neutral detergent fiber (p<0.01), acid detergent fiber and ether extract (p<0.05). The planting year also significantly influenced the available energy contents (DE on dry matter basis, p<0.05; ME on dry matter basis, p<0.01, respectively) and the ATTD of neutral detergent fiber (p<0.01), acid detergent fiber (p<0.01), crude protein (p<0.01), and ether extract (p<0.01). No interaction was observed between the variety and planting year in DE and ME contents in corn. In conclusion, the variety and planting year significantly influenced the available energy and nutrient digestibility of corn fed to growing pigs.

Effects of Synchronization of Carbohydrate and Protein Supply in Total Mixed Ration with Korean Rice Wine Residue on Ruminal Fermentation, Nitrogen Metabolism and Microbial Protein Synthesis in Holstein Steers

  • Three Holstein steers in the growing phase, each with a ruminal cannula, were used to test the hypothesis that the synchronization of the hourly rate of carbohydrate and nitrogen (N) released in the rumen would increase the amount of retained nitrogen for growth and thus improve the efficiency of microbial protein synthesis (EMPS). In Experiment 1, in situ degradability coefficients of carbohydrate and N in feeds including Korean rice wine residue (RWR) were determined. In Experiment 2, three total mixed ration (TMR) diets having different rates of carbohydrate and N release in the rumen were formulated using the in situ degradability of the feeds. All diets were made to contain similar contents of crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) but varied in their hourly pattern of nutrient release. The synchrony index of the three TMRs was 0.51 (LS), 0.77 (MS) and 0.95 (HS), respectively. The diets were fed at a restricted level (2% of the animal's body weight) in a $3{\times}3$ Latin-square design. Synchronizing the hourly supply of energy and N in the rumen did not significantly alter the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, NDF or acid detergent fiber (ADF) (p>0.05). The ruminal $NH_3$-N content of the LS group at three hours after feeding was significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of the other groups; however, the mean values of ruminal $NH_3$-N, pH and VFA concentration among the three groups were not significantly different (p>0.05). In addition, the purine derivative (PD) excretion in urine and microbial-N production (MN) among the three groups were not significantly different (p>0.05). In conclusion, synchronizing dietary energy and N supply to the rumen did not have a major effect on nutrient digestion or microbial protein synthesis (MPS) in Holstein steers.

농촌형 녹색마을에 신재생에너지 보급을 위한 시설재배 및 농업기계의 CO2 배출량 분석 (CO2 Emission Analysis from Horticultural Facilities & Agricultural Machinery for Spread of New and Renewable Energy in Rural-type Green Village)

  • 화석에너지 의존도를 줄이면서 $CO_2$ 배출량을 낮추기 위하여 정부에서는 녹색마을을 선정하고 에너지 자급률을 40% 수준으로 높이려는 계획을 추진 중이다. 본 연구는 각 농업 분야 중에서 농기계의 사용과 재배 시설에 있어서의 에너지 사용량을 파악하고 이를 바이오디젤로 대체하였을 때의 $CO_2$ 저감수준을 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여, 농업 각 분야별 에너지 소비수준의 분석, 그리고 실천 가능한 신재생 에너지원의 선정이 요구된다. 경종재배의 전체 연간온실가스 배출량은 $5,667,258\;t-CO_2$이고, 그 중 시설 부문은 $4,932,607\;t-CO_2$인 것으로 분석되었으며, 농업시설 부문 중 에너지원별로 보면 경유가 $3,105,707\;t-CO_2$, 중유가 $1,370,578\;t-CO_2$를 배출하는 것으로 분석되었다. 우리나라 시설작물의 단위 면적당 온실가스 평균배출량은 $29,418\;t-CO_2/ha$인 것으로 나타났다. 농기계별 2007년 총에너지소비량을 살펴보면 트랙터가 284,763 kL로 가장 높게 나타났으며, 동력 경운기 221,314 kL, 곡물건조기 145,524 kL, 콤바인 72,537 kL 등의 순이었다. 전라북도 G시를 대상으로 이용 중인 시설재배와 농업기계의 이산화탄소 배출량을 비교분석한 결과, 바이오디젤로 전환하면 약 7% 정도의 $CO_2$ 감소효과가 있는 것으로 분석되었다.

Effects of Synchronizing the Rate of Dietary Energy and Nitrogen Release on Ruminal Fermentation, Microbial Protein Synthesis, Blood Urea Nitrogen and Nutrient Digestibility in Beef Cattle

  • The objective of this research was to determine the effects of synchronizing the rate of dietary energy and nitrogen release on: ruminal fermentation, microbial protein synthesis, blood urea nitrogen, and nutrient digestibility in beef cattle. Four, two-and-a-half year old Brahman-Thai native crossbred steers were selected for the project. Each steer was fitted with a rumen cannula and proximal duodenal cannula. The steers were then randomly assigned in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design to receive four dietary treatments. Prior to formulation of the dietary treatments, feed ingredients were analyzed for chemical composition and a nylon bag technique was used to analyze the treatments various ingredients for degradability. The treatments were organized in four levels of a synchrony index (0.39, 0.50, 0.62 and 0.74). The results showed that dry matter digestibility trend to be increased (p<0.06), organic matter and acid detergent fiber digestibility increased linearly (p<0.05), while crude protein and neutral detergent fiber digestibility were not significantly different (p>0.05). Higher concentration and fluctuation of ruminal ammonia and blood urea were observed in the animal that received the lower synchrony index diets. As the levels of the synchrony index increased, the concentrations of ruminal ammonia nitrogen and blood urea nitrogen, at the 4 h post feeding, decreased linearly (p<0.05). Total volatile fatty acid and bacteria populations at the 4 h post feeding increased linearly (p<0.05). Microbial protein synthesis trend to be increase (p<0.08). The results of this research indicate that synchronizing the rate of degradation of dietary energy and nitrogen release improves ruminal fermentation, microbial protein synthesis and feed utilization.

지역단위 미이용 바이오매스 발생량 추정 (Estimation of Community-Based Unused Biomass Generation)

  • This study was carried out to evaluation of biomass generation mechanisms and to propose the estimation method of biomass generation. Agricultural by-product biomass is generated during crops cultivation and after harvest. However these are not uniformly generated yearly and these depending on the seasons. For planning of biomass utilization, accurate information of the biomass resources is needed, especially characteristic and productivity of biomass are necessary. Agricultural by-product biomass are generated in a wide area being scattered and it is one of the major reason why agricultural biomass utilization is not activated compared with other waste biomass. In this study, estimation and evaluation biomass generation is achieved in specific spatial and temporal boundary, A-city in Gyeongi-do and september to November respectively. Quantity and quality of by-product biomass show big difference depending on the crop species and cultivation periods and these difference bring up that accurate biomass estimation should be considered during planning of biomass utilization and technology selecting for biomass converting to energy and other forms.

양액재배 농가의 고형배지 선택 기준에 관한 연구 (Solid Culture Medium Selection Criteria for Hydroponics Farm Households)

  • This study aimed to analyze the selection criteria and priority settings for solid culture medium used in hydroponic crop production in farm households. Expert brain storming was carried out to extract solid culture medium selection criteria for hydroponic farming. As a result, 3 criteria of economy (cost), productivity, and environment, and 9 factors were extracted. A questionnaire survey of hydroponic farm households was conducted in Gyeonggi, Gangwon, and Chooncheong provinces. AHP analysis of the hydroponic solid culture medium selection criteria identified productivity as the most important criterion, chosen by 58.7% of the respondents, followed by economy (28.4%) and environment (12.9%). The 9 factors were rated by the respondents in the following decreasing order of importance: 1, crop yield (28.3%); 2, pest occurrence (18.5%); 3, maintenance/management costs (12.0%); 4, convenience of maintenance/management (13.4%); 5, initial investment cost (11.6%); 6, material energy consumption (6.5%); 7, waste recyclability (4.0%); 8, waste disposal costs (3.4%); and 9 environmental emissions (1.81%). These results imply that hydroponic farm households consider cultivation-related quality factors more important than economic factors, such as price of culture medium or installation cost.

  • 분자설계를 통하여 측쇄를 변화시킨 아크릴공중합체를 합성하여 아크릴공중합체 점착제와 초박형웨이퍼와의 젖음성 및 점착물성을 조사하였다. 선형 아크릴공중합체를 에폭시계 Tetra-DX 가교제와 반응시켜 3차원 망상구조를 형성하고 가교의 영향을 조사하였다. 계면상호작용보다는 아크릴공중합체의 측쇄변화가 젖음성에 더 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 가교도가 증가할수록 probe tack, peel strength가 감소하는 경향을 나타냈다. 가교에 의해 SAFT 내열성이 증가하였지만 가교제의 함량이 증가하면 오히려 SAFT 내열성이 감소하였다.

A Comparative Study on the Effect of Cassava Hay Supplementation in Swamp Buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) and Cattle (Bos indicus)

  • Twelve swamp buffaloes and Brahman cattle heifers (6 animals each) were randomly assigned to two treatments, control (grazing only) and supplementation of cassava hay (CH) at 1-kg dry matter per head per day (DM/hd/d), in a $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement according to a cross-over design. The cassava hay contained a high level of protein (19.5% of DM) and a strategic amount of condensed tannins (4.0% of DM). As a result it was revealed that supplementation of CH at 1-kg DM/hd/d significantly (p<0.05) improved the nutrition of both swamp buffaloes and Brahman cattle in terms of DM, organic matter (OM), protein and energy intake and digestibility, ruminal NH3-N and rumen ecology. Supplementation significantly (p<0.05) reduced weight losses in both species and improved the health, in terms of reduced number of parasite eggs in feces (p<0.05), of both buffaloes and cattle. There tended to be a difference in term of response to CH between the two species. The DM, OM, protein intake and digestibility and total digestible energy intake tended to be higher for buffaloes as compared to cattle. Moreover, the percentage reduction of parasite eggs tended to be higher for buffaloes as compared to cattle (57.6 and 45.0%, respectively). However, there were no significant interactions between species and treatments.

표고버섯 골목의 사용연수에 따른 화학적, 물리적 성상 및 폭쇄처리 후 변화 관찰 (Analysis of Chemical and Physical Characteristics of Log Woods for Oak Mushroom Production Depending on Cultivation Periods and Steam Explosion Treatment)

  • 표고버섯 폐골목의 대체에너지 자원으로서의 가능성을 살펴보기 위하여 폐골목을 사용연수별로 구분하고 동일 수종의 정상재와 함께 화학적, 물리적 성상을 비교, 조사하였다. 또한 폐골목에 잔존하는 효소에 의한 전처리 효과를 살펴보기 위하여 기존의 전처리 방법인 폭쇄처리법과 비교하였다. 사용연수에 따른 화학적 성상의 변화는 회분, 수용성 추출물, alkali 추출물, 유기용매 추출물 함량 모두 뚜렷한 경향을 나타내진 않았지만 균주를 접종한 직후 폐골목에서 정상재보다 높은 함량을 나타내었다. Holocellulose 함량은 큰 폭으로 감소하였고 다른 주성분인 lignin 함량은 균주 접종 전후에 큰 변화를 보여주지 않았지만 cellulose 함량이 큰 폭으로 감소한 것을 고려하면 균주에 의해 상당량의 lignin 분해가 진행되었다. 부후정도는 균주 접종 후 점차 증가하는 모습을 보였지만, 결정화도는 급격히 감소하였다. 폭쇄처리에 의한 화학적, 물리적 성상의 변화로서 수용성 추출물, alkali 추출물, 유기용매 추출물 함량은 큰 폭으로 증가하였고, holocellulose 함량도 소폭 상승하였지만 lignin 함량은 특별한 경향을 나타내지 않았다. 그러나 다른 추출물의 함량이 급격히 증가한 것을 고려하면 holocellulose와 lignin 모두 감소하였다고 생각된다. 폭쇄처리에 의한 결정화도의 감소는 균주 접종 후의 감소폭과 비슷한 결과를 나타내었고, 인위적으로 부후시킨 재료에 대한 lignin 함량은 폐골목의 함량보다 감소하여 잔존 효소에 의한 전처리 가능성을 나타내었다. 이상의 결과로 미루어 보아 폐골목은 대체에너지 자원으로서 충분한 가능성을 갖고 있다고 사료된다.

Using Sustainable Agriculture to Improve Human Nutrition and Health

  • The purpose of this article is twofold: 1) to provide nutrition professionals with the history of how the concept of sustainable diets was introduced to the nutrition profession and 2) to describe how different sustainable agricultural practices offer potential for improving human nutrition and health. The idea of connecting sustainable agriculture With the promotion of human nutrition and health is not new. It is a concept that was introduced to the nutrition profession more than 20 years ago. To foster healthful, sustainable diets, consumers need to choose more whole foods. From the standpoint of nutrition and health, whole foods are naturally higher in fiber and lower in fat, sodium, sugar and additives compared to highly processed foods. From the standpoint of agricultural sustainability, whole foods bypass the high-energy costs of food processing and transportation. Organic farming systems offer potential benefits to human health through reducing farmers' exposure to pesticides and by increasing the total phenolic content in selected food crops. Participation in farmers' market nutrition programs and gardening has been associated with increased fruit and vegetable intake. Gardening may also be a way to increase access to fresh produce in low-income populations that do not have access to nutritious food outlets and to increase physical activity. Further research is needed to assess the human nutrition and health benefits of other types of sustainable agriculture strategies and to investigate the links among different agricultural practices with nutrient and total phenolic content in a wider variety of important food crops.
