  • Shopping became a meaning of simply buying goods and service as well as buying place and cultural experiences to people living nowaday. Many people make an appointment, watch movies and enjoy shopping in shopping malls. This Change of meaning of shopping made shopping center to be a place for pubic space gradually. Although shopping mall, a type of shopping center, existed from the past, contemporary shopping mall that is enclosed from air started to be established in 1950's in North America. After that lifestyle and shopping environment having been changed continuously and shopping mall in terms of architectural typology has been changed as well. Now shopping mall provides leisure and entertainment to people and also is playing an important role as redeveloping a city and revitalizing a town. This study will take a look at changes of typology of out-of-town regional shopping mall in north America and analyze reasons and characteristics of changes since 1960's shopping malls. The purpose of this study is to categorize the type of out-of-town regional shopping mall and to find application method in shopping mall design in Korea.

  • Shopping malls have been developed to increase sales revenue and attract visitors. This study focused on the sense of the outdoor characteristics of these shopping malls by comparing open and enclosed types of shopping malls in common spaces in LA and Korea through case study analyses. This research through case studies will form the foundation of comfortable shopping mall space design. The results are the follows. 1. Enclosed shopping malls tend to provide large indoor space to create a sense of outdoors. 2. The common space of enclosed shopping malls is developed through space expansion with horizontal and vertical connections that appear in different combinations depending on the space constraints and contexts. 3. The architectural planning of enclosed shopping malls are largely dependent on the concept of everyday life portrayed in the identity of each space, which usually involve the inclusion of sizable atriums to host indoor sports or special performances.

  • Emergency response of fire prevention manager has an effect on decisive emergency exit behavior of customer who is not accustomed to emergency response in a large-scale shopping department on fire. Especially enclosed stairways in a large scale store are usually located in back space where is impossible for customer to access. Therefore, speedy emergency exit inducement by fire prevention manager is needed for the customer's safe egress. The object of study is to analyse the factors affecting egress behavior and emergency response of fire prevention manager in respect of fire prevention management.
