  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the emulsion stability according to the quantity of emulsifiers and the pressure of homogenizer in coffee whitener preparation. The results of this study are as follow : 1. To obtain a standard emulsifier, the ratio of mono and triglycerides(Atoms 150), sorbitan monostearate (Span 60) and polyoxylene(20) sorbitan monostearate(Tween 60) was 60 . 20 : 20 and the optimum quantity was about 0.9fS for stable emulsion. 2. Characteristics as coffee whitner were markedly improved when the pressure of homogenizer was 200∼250kg1cmz and homogenizing times are over 4. 3. The good whitening capacity was showed when fat glouble's average diameter was under 0.5 Um.

  • A new technology was introduced to the emulsion polymerization. It is the ultrasonic activation method which replaced a chemical initiator and the environmentally benign process. In this study, free radicals were produced by a pulse type ultrasound energy irradiation, then polystyrene latex was polymerized without chemical initiator. With ultrasonic energy density, the degree of polymerization, average molecular weight, and particle size were increased, but the polydispersity index for the molecular weight and the particle size were decreased. The optimum condition of emulsifier concentration and temperature was found to be 1.0 wt.% SDS and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively. As a result, the emulsion polymerization process without chemical initiator was proved to be comparable to common latex properties such as average molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, particle size, etc.

  • Alkali-soluble random copolymer (ASR) was used as a functional resin in the emulsion polymerization of styrene to prepare structured nanoparticles. The calorimetric technique was applied to study the kinetics of emulsion polymerization of styrene using ASR and conventional ionic emulsifier, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). ASR could form aggregates like micelles and the solubilization ability of the aggregates was dependent on the neutralization degree of ASR. The rate of polymerization in ASR system was lower than that in SDBS system. This result can be explained by the creation of a hairy ASR layer around the particle surface, which decreases the diffusion rate of free radicals through this region. Although a decrease in particle size was observed, the rate of polymerization decreased with increasing ASR concentration. The higher the concentration of ASR is, the thicker and denser ASR layer may be, and the more difficult it would therefore be for radicals to reach the particle through this layer of ASR. The rate of polymerization decreased with increasing the neutralization degree of ASR. The aggregates with high neutralization of ASR are less efficient in solubilizing the monomer and capturing initiator radicals than that of the lower neutralization degree, which leads to decrease in rate of polymerization.

  • The purpose of this research was to synthesize fluorine modified waterborne polyurethane dispersion (F-WPU) by soap-free (internal emulsifier) emulsion polymerization techniques, to prepare coating solution based on fluorine modified waterborne polyurethane dispersion (F-WPU) and to compare the chemical and thermo-mechanical properties on the electrogalvanized steel sheet. Environmentally friendly F-WPU was prepared with a fluorinated polyol containing 60 wt% of fluorine. There are various ways of combining a wide variety of fluorinated polyols and diisocyanate to exhibit novel properties of waterborne polyurethane dispersion. Components of coating solution were largely divided into 4 kinds i.e., F-WPU, acrylic emulsion, silane coupling agent, and colloidal silicate. F-WPU coating solution on the electro-galvanized steel sheet showed excellent properties of corrosion resistance, alkali resistance and heat resistance, as compared to other coating solutions using a general waterborne resin. The F-WPU coating solution's reliable effects are possibly due to the fluorine atoms incorporated even in a small amount of F-WPU.

  • Emulsified transesterification of soybean oil into biodiesel was investigated using potassium hydroxide and sodium methoxide catalysts with methyl glucoside oleic polyester as a methanol-in-oil emulsifier. The transesterification reaction conditions were optimized to obtain high yields of fatty acid methyl esters of the quality defined by biodiesel standards. The developed process resulted in $95{\sim}96%$ of overall yield from soybean oil by alkali-catalyzed methanolysis at $45^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature with 6:1 of methanol-to-oil molar ratio and 1(v/v)% methyl glucoside oleic polyester in the presense of 0.8wt% KOH and 1.2wt% $NaOCH_{3}$.

  • The effects of oil concentration and stabilizers and emulsifiers on the emulsion stability of mayonnaise were studied. The highest viscosity of mayonnaise and the least amount of oil separation were by the additon of soluble starch, but when it was added below 0.6%, the viscosity of a mayonnaise decreased sharply during storage at 3$0^{\circ}C$. The stability of mayonnaise was increased only when the soluble starch was added to mayonnaise above 0.9%. When xanthan gum was added at the concentration of 0.05~0.1%, the viscosity of mayonnaise was increased considerably and the emulsion stability was improve. But if it was added more than at 0.2% on the contrary, the emulsion stability was reduced and the texture of mayonnaise was changed. When both 0.1%-xanthan gum and 0.3%-soluble starch were added, the most stable mayonnaise was obtained.

  • This study examined the effects of Cornus fructus addition to suger snap cookies on WRC (water rentention capacity) and AWRC (alkaline water retention capacity). WRC and AWRC increased as more Cornus fructus powder was added, whereas the sedimentation value and Pelshenke value decreased. Regarding cookie color, L value decreased, whereas the a and b values increased. As the cookie diameter became smaller, thickness increased and spread factor decreased. Hardness of the cookies decreased, and preference was highest for cookies with 5% added Cornus fructus. The preferences for cookies were in the following order: 7% < 3% < 1% < 0% < 5% addition. In conclusion, addition of less than 5% Cornus fructus powder was the most desirable. To complement cookie appearance, it seems necessary to adjust the water content of Cornus fructus powder or add an emulsifier.

  • A number of hydrophilic acrylic comonomers were incorporated into styrene-butadiene soap-free emulsion polymerization. It was found that reaction rate decreased according to : AN>AA>MMA>EA>IA>AAM>MA>HEMA. It was also observed that reaction rate increased with decreasing H-bonding factor contribution to the solubility parameter of the hydrophilic comonoer. The SBR latexes were very monodisperse with the particle size distribution of $1.03{\times}1.12$. Since growth rate is proportional to polymerization time, the difference in conversion rates between various comonomers was resulted from the particle number density of SBR latexes for the various hydrophilic comonomers. It was also found that the colloidal stability of the latexes was excellent because no external emulsifier was incorporated.

  • Silicone oil has organic and inorganic properties, and its skeleton is polysiloxane bonding that silicon is bonded hydrogen or organic group. Silicone compounds are very smooth and lubricant properties by low surface tension, low temperature dependence, and nonadhesive properties. Because of these properties, silicone compounds are used as many parts of chemicals, softener, smooth and libricant agents, water-repellent agent, and defoaming agent, etc. Emulsion was prepared with the inversion emulsification method which adopted the agent-in-oil method dissolving the polyoxyethylene(7) tridecyl ether(HLB 12.2) into methoxy terminated poly(dimethyl-co-methyl amino) siloxane and hydroxy terminated poly(dimethyl-co-methyl amino) siloxane in water. At this time, processed emulsion was almost microemulsion. When ratio of emulsifier increases, emulsion is stable bacuause microemulsion is solubilized by emulsion drop size and zeta-potential are decreased. But, when amount of electrolyte is increase, emulsion became unstable because emulsion drop size is increased.
