  • The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of the IPS Empress ceramic crown according to the incisal depth (1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm) and axial inclination ($4^{\circ}$, $8^{\circ}$, $12^{\circ}$) of the lower central ncisor. After 10 metal dies were made for each group, the IPS Empress ceramic crowns were fabricated and each crown was cemented on each metal die with resin cement. The cemented crowns mounted on the testing jig were inclined 30 degrees and a universal testing machine was used to measure the fracture strength. The results of this study were as follows : The fracture strength of the ceramic crown with 2.0mm depth and $12^{\circ}$ inclination was the highest (648 N). Crowns of 1.5mm depth and $4^{\circ}$ inclination had the lowest strength (482 N). There were no significant differences of the fracture strength by axial inclination in same incisal depth group. The fracture mode of the crowns was similar. Most of fracture lines began at the loading area and extended through proximal surface perpendicular to the margin irrespective of incisal depth. There had correlation between fracture strength and fractured surface area.

  • There have been many studies about marginal discrepancy of single restorations made by various systems and materials. But many of statistical inferences are not definite because of sample size, measurement number, measuring instruments. etc. The purpose of this study was to compare the marginal adaptations of the anterior single restorations made by different systems and to consider more desirable statistical methods in analysing the marginal fit. The in vitro marginal discrepancies of three different all-ceramic crown systems (Celay In-Ceram. Conventional In-Ceram. IPS Empress 2 layering technique) and one control group (PFM) were evaluated and compared. The crowns were made from one extracted maxillary central incisor prepared with a 1mm shoulder margin and $6^{\circ}$ taper walls by milling machine. 10 crowns per each system were fabricated. Measurements or a crown were recorded at 50 points that were randomly selected for marginal gap evaluation. Non-parametric statistical analysis was performed for the results. Within the limits of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1 Mean gap dimensions and standard deviations at the marginal opening for the maxillary incisor crowns were $98.2{\pm}40.6{\mu}m$ for PFM, $83.5{\pm}18.7{\mu}m$ for Celay In-Ceram, $104.9{\pm}44.1{\mu}m$ for conventional In-Ceram, and $45.5{\pm}11.5{\mu}m$ for IPS Empress 2 layering technique. The IPS Empress 2 system showed the smallest marginal gap (P<0.05). The marginal openings of the other three groups were not significantly different (P<0.05). 2 The marginal discrepancies found in this study were all within clinically acceptable standards ($100\sim150{\mu}m$). 3. When the variable is so controlled that the system may be the only one, mean value is interpreted to be the marginal discrepancy of a restoration which is made by each system and standard deviation is to be technique-sensitivity of each one. 4. From the standard deviations. the copy-milling technique (Celay/In-Ceram) was not considered to be technique-sensitive in comparison with other methods. 5. Parametric analysis is more reliable than non-parametric one in interpretation of the mean and standard deviation. The sample size of each group has to be more than 30 to use parametric statistics. The level of clinically acceptable marginal fit has not been established. Further studies are needed.

  • The pupose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of five kinds of all-ceramic crowns(Vintage, Dicor Empress-staining, Empress-layering, In-Ceram) luted with glass ionomer cerment and composite resin cement and to evaluate the effect of cements on the fracture stregth of all ceramic crowns. Five groups of twelve uniform sized all-ceramic crown specimens were fabricated. Six specimens of each group were cemented with glass ionomer cement(Fuji G.I. Cement) and the remaining six specimens of each group were etched, silane-treated, and cemented with composite resin cement(Bistite resin cement). The crowns were stored in water$(37^{\circ}C)$ for 1 day prior to loading in an Instron, using a steel ball(diameter 4mm) at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The crowns were angled $30^{\circ}$, so the steel ball contacted with the crowns 2mm lingual from the mid-incisal edge. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. With G.I. cement, mean fracture load(Kg) Were : Intage : $18.33{\pm}1.47$ ; Empress-staining : $23.92{\pm}6.67$ ; Dicor : $24.0{\pm}5.81$ ; Empress-layering : $26.92{\pm}2.80$ ; In-Ceram : $51.58{\pm}6.87$ ; ANOVA revealed a significant difference existed(p<0.05) between the group A(Vintage, Dicor, Empress-staining, Empress-layering) and group B(In-Ceram). 2. With Resin cement, mean fracture load(Kg) were : Intage : $22.75{\pm}4.97$ ; Dicor : $42.75{\pm}7.07$ ; Empress-staining : $44.08{\pm}7.99$ ; Empresslayering : $50.42{\pm}5.43$ ; In-Ceram : $52.58{\pm}6.51$ ; ANOVA revealed a significatnt difference existed(p<0.05) between the group A(Vintage) and B(Dicor, Empress-staining Empress-alyering, In-Ceram). 3. Resin cement significantly increased the fracture strength of the all-ceramic crowns for Dicor(156%), Empress-staining(185%), Empress-alyering(187%)(p<0.05); but did not increase the fracture strength of Vintage(128%) and In-Ceram(101%)(p>0.05). 4. Majority of the all-ceramic crowns show a wedge fracture extending through proximal surfaces to an apex, usually apical third(with G.I. cement) or middle third(with Resin cement) of the facial surface.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure the marginal fidelities and the fracture strength of IPS Empress $2^{(R)}\;and\;In-Ceram^{(R)}$ ceramic crowns. After constructed of 12 experimental dies for each group, ceramic crowns were fabricated on the metal master dies prepared on the maxillary right premolar Marginal gaps were measured on the specimen between the margin of each crown and finish-ing line of the metal master die by using stereo-microscope($SZ-ST^{(R)}$ Olympus, Japan) and all specimens were cemented on the metal master die with Bistite $II^{(R)}$ (Tokuyama soda Co, LTD., Japan) resin cement. Finally marginal gaps were measured again. To measure of the fracture strength, buccal incline on the functional cusp of specimens were loaded until the catastrophic failure occurred by using the AGS-1000 $D^{(R)}$(Shimadzu, Japan). The result of marginal fidelities and fracture strength were statistically analyzed with the SPSS version 8.0 programs. The results of this study were as follows : 1. No significant difference was found in the mean marginal fidelities and fracture strength between the IPS Empress $2^{(R)}\;and\;In-Ceram^{(R)}$. 2. In comparison of marginal fidelities between before and after cementation, there was significant difference(P<0.05). The IPS Empress 2 system was shown in this study that had good marginal fidelities and fracture strength compared to In-Ceram ceramics. Although this system was acceptable to clinical applications, the system still has to be considered long-term researches about marginal fidelities and fracture strength due to the lack of data about the clinical researches.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate marginal fit of four all-ceramic crown systems 1) conventional In-Ceram, 2) copy-milled In-Ceram using Celay system, 3) IPS Empress, 4) OPC(Optimal Pressable Ceramic). All ceramic crowns were made on epoxy dies. The fabricated crowns were sandblasted, cleaned with ultrasonic cleansing, silanated, and cemented with Bistite composite resin cement. the selected marginal areas of the crowns were the labial, lingual, mesial, and distal surface. Each selected area of surface was $0.6{\times}1.6mm$ in dimension. The image of each marginal area was captured to computer files using DT-55 Frame Grabber and light microscope connected CCD camera. The marginal gaps were measured every $70{\mu}m$ using computer image analysis program. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. The marginal fit of four all-ceramic crowns were significantly different from each other(p<0.01), and mean marginal fit values obtained were $31.42{\pm}16.52{\mu}m$ in conventional In-Ceram, $55.45{\pm}27.90{\mu}m$ in copy-milled In-Ceram using Celay system, $44.36{\pm}24.59{\mu}m$ in IPS Empress, $47.21{\pm}20.42{\mu}m$ in OPC. 2. In the marginal fit of conventional In-Ceraw and copy-milled In-Ceram crowns using Celay system there was no significant difference between mesiodistal and buccolingual surface, but in the marginal fit of IPS Empress and OPC crowns, there was significant difference between mesiodistal and buccolingual surface(p<0.01). 3. The marginal fit of four kinds of all-ceramic crowns was clinically acceptable.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the shade changes(${\Delta}E^*$) about $In-Ceram^{(R)}$, $IPS-Empress^{(R)}$, $OPC^{(R)}$ by using of the spectrophotometer arising from inital status and before and after cementation of the resin cement mounted on the metal core. We used a couple of statistics such as 'One- Way ANOVA' and 'Multiple Range Test.' We could be able to verify significantly what is being discussed here up to 95%. The results drawn from our research are as follows : 1. At the time of our experiments regarding the initial shapes of all-ceramic and mounting status of all-ceramic on the metal crown(${\Delta}E^*1$), and a comparison of mounting of all ceramic on the metal crown with all-ceramic cemented on the metal core(${\Delta}E^*2$), at the time of shade change of initial shapes and after we cemented on the metal core. (1) no significant difference among all-ceramics was found. (2) no particular difference was found regarding the $In-Ceram^{(R)}$. (3) a significant difference between the ${\Delta}E^*1$ and ${\Delta}E^*2$ regarding the $IPS-Empress^{(R)}$ was found(P<0.05). (4) a significant difference between the ${\Delta}E^*1$ and ${\Delta}E^*2$ regarding the $OPC^{(R)}$ was found(P<0.05). 2. When we compared the shade changes(${\Delta}E^*$) resulted from before and after the cementation on each of the parts involved of some all-ceramic, we could be able to find shade change increase form incisal third, middle third. and cervical third in that order in $In-Ceram^{(R)}$(spinell), IPS $Empress^{(R)}$, and $OPC^{(R)}$ all. In addition. we could be able to find a significant difference between cervical third and incisal third, middle third. (P<0.05) From what we have just seen, we might conclude that there is a significant shade change difference before and after the cementation with respect to $IPS-Empress^{(R)}$ and $OPC^{(R)}$. In addition, we could also be able to find more shade change difference at the cervical third rather than incisal third and middle third depending on the parts involved.

  • The computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system was introduced to shorten the production time of all-ceramic restorations and the number of patient visits. Among these types of ceramic for dental CAD/CAM, they have been processed into inlay, onlay, and crown shapes using leucite-reinforced glass-ceramics to improve strength. The purpose of this study was to observe the mechanical properties and microstructure of leucite-reinforced glass-ceramics for dental CAD/CAM. Two types of leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic blocks (IPS Empress CAD, Rosetta BM) were prepared with diameter of 13 mm and thickness of 1 mm. Biaxial flexural testing was conducted using a piston-on-three-ball method at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Weibull statistics were used for the analysis of biaxial flexural strength. Fracture toughness was obtained using an indentation fracture method. Specimens were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy to examine the microstructure of the leucite crystalline phase after acid etching with 0.5% hydrofluoric acid aqueous solution for 1 minute. The results of strength testing showed that IPS Empress CAD had a mean value of $158.1{\pm}8.6MPa$ and Rosetta BM of $172.3{\pm}8.3MPa$. The fracture toughness results showed that IPS Empress CAD had a mean value of $1.28{\pm}0.19MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and Rosetta BM of $1.38{\pm}0.12MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$. The Rosetta BM sample exhibited higher strength and fracture toughness. Moreover, the crystalline phase size and ratio were increased in the Rosetta BM sample. The above results are expected to elucidate the basic mechanical properties and crystal structure characteristics of IPS Empress CAD and Rosetta BM. Additionally, they will help develop leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic materials for CAD/CAM.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the microleakage of the IPS Empress ceramic crown according to 1) margin types such as rounded shoulder and bevel, 2) margin locations such as enamel and dentine, 3) resin cement types such as Variolink and Bistite. For this study, 80 extracted premolar teeth were used. After 10 experimental dies were prepared for each group, the IPS Empress ceramic crowns were fabricated on the dies and cemented with one of two types of resin cement. After 1,000 cycles of thermal changes were given with the thermocycling unit, each specimen was sectioned with a low speed diamond saw in both the buccolingual and the mesiodistal direction. The microleakage was then measured with a stereo microscope. The obtained results were as follows : 1. Every experimental group showed microleakage. The microleakage of the crowns which had a rounded shoulder on enamel cemented with Variolink was the lowest of all. The resulting rank of the mean microleakage was rounded shoulder on enamel using Variolink(0.601mm), rounded shoulder on enamel using Bistite (0.794mm), bevel on enamel using Variolink (0.826mm), rounded shoulder on dentine using Variolink(1.054mm), bevel on enamel using Bistite(1.087mm), rounded shoulder on dentine using Bistite(1.176mm), bevel on dentine using Variolink(1.258mm), and bevel on dentine using Bistite(1.467mm). 2. The statistically significant differences in the microleakage were found in 4 cases: rounded shoulder on enamel using Variolink and bevel on dentine using Variolink, rounded shoulder on enamel using Variolink and bevel on dentine using Bistite, rounded shoulder on enamel using Bistite and bevel on dentine using Bistite, bevel on enamel using Variolink and bevel on dentine using Bistite. 3. The microleakage of rounded shoulder finish line was lower than that of bevel finish line. The statistically significant differences were found with respect to the type of finish lines. 4. The microleakage of the finish line on enamel was lower than that of finish line on dentine. The statistically significant differences were found with respect to the location of the finish lines. 5. The microleakage of the Variolink cement was lower than that of the Bistite cement. The statistically significant differences were found with respect to the resin cements.
