Women's Empowerment Facilitates Complete Immunization in Indonesian Children: A Cross-sectional Study

  • Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to examine the effect of women's empowerment on the immunization of Indonesian children. The secondary objective was to examine the effect of wealth as a factor modifying this association. Methods: We utilized data from the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS). The subjects were married women with children aged 12-23 months (n=3532). Complete immunization was defined using the 2017 IDHS definition. Multiple components of women's empowerment were measured: enabling resources, decision-making involvement, and attitude toward intimate partner violence. The primary analysis was conducted using binomial logistic regression. Model 1 represented only the indicators of women's empowerment and model 2 controlled for socio-demographic variables. Subgroup analyses were conducted for each wealth group. Results: The primary analysis using model 1 identified several empowerment indicators that facilitated complete immunization. The analysis using model 2 found that maternal education and involvement in decision-making processes facilitated complete immunization in children. Subgroup analyses identified that wealth had a modifying effect. The indicators of women's empowerment were strong determinants of complete immunization in lower wealth quintiles but insignificant in middle-income and higher-income quintiles. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this study is the first to explore women's empowerment as a determinant of child immunization in Indonesia. The results indicate that women's empowerment must be considered in Indonesia's child immunization program. Women's empowerment was not found to be a determinant in higher wealth quintiles, which led us to rethink the conceptual framework of the effect of women's empowerment on health outcomes.

Effects of a Community-based Empowerment Program for Resident Leaders Participating in the Healthy Apartment Project (건강아파트 주민지도자 대상 지역사회역량강화 교육의 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a community-based empowerment program for resident leaders participating in the Healthy Apartment project. Methods: The design of this study was a single group pre-post test design. This program was consisted of 4-hour sessions. The total participants were 22 leaders. Results: The participants showed significant changes in social support (Z=-2.33, p=.020), collective action (Z=-3.91, p<.001), conflict and homogeneity (Z=-2.03, p=.042), and community perception index (Z=-3.97, p<.001) as sub factors of the individual level of SC-IQ (Integrated Questionnaire for the Measurement of Social Capital). They also showed significant changes in necessity of the resident organization (Z=-4.13, p<.001), resident participation (Z=-3.84, p<.001), convergence of resident opinion (Z=-3.94, p<.001) and the role of community leaders (Z=-3.94, p<.001) as sub factors of the perception and confidence of resident leaders (Z=-3.85, p<.001). Conclusion: Results indicate that the community-based empowerment program is effective in perceptions of social capital on the individual level and improvement of recognition as resident leaders and confidence for resident leaders.

Effects of Maternal Empowerment Program on Stress, Anxiety, Depression and Parenting Confidence in Mothers of Preterm Infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (신생아집중치료실 입원 미숙아 어머니를 위한 임파워먼트 프로그램이 스트레스, 불안, 우울 및 양육자신감에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an empowerment program on maternal stress, anxiety, depression and parenting confidence. Methods: A total of 44 mothers of preterm infants were assigned into an experimental or a control group (n=22 each). The experimental group received the usual nursing care and 7 sessions of an empowerment program. The control group only received the usual care. The program was implemented from June to December, 2016 in the neonatal intensive care unit of K university-affiliated hospital in Daegu, Korea. The outcome variables measured were parental stress (PSS: NICU), anxiety (STAI), depression (CES-D) and parenting confidence. Data were analyzed using t-test or repeated measures ANOVA. Results: Scores for both parental stress (t=3.07 p=.004) and depression (F=3.76, p=.26) were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group. However, there were no significant differences in anxiety between the groups (F=0.79, p=.505). Parenting confidence scores (F=9.05, p=.001) were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. Conclusion: A maternal empowerment program can be an effective means of reducing parental stress and depression as well as enhancing parenting confidence, for mothers of preterm infants.

A Study on the Public Services for Families in Crisis - focused on the Family empowerment program at the Healthy Families Support Center - (위기가족지원 서비스 운영 실태에 관한 연구 -건강가정지원센터의 가족역량강화사업을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current performance of the public services for families in crisis by analyzing the family empowerment service in Healthy Families Support centers. We analyzed performance data of the family empowerment service provided by 25 Healthy Families Support Centers from 2011 to 2013. The results are as follows; First, the number of families in crisis which received public services from the family empowerment service by the Healthy Family Support Centers in 2013 were less than the number in 2011, but increased from 2012. Second, according to the types of crisis, school violence was the most service needed family crisis in 2011, and it was suicide in 2012 and 2013. Third, in the specific services in emergency support for families and family function recovery program, Psychological and emotional support services were the most offered services during 3 years. Accordingly, efficiency of the programs and services in terms of budget is higher than that of any other services. Fourth, analysing the evaluation results of amily empowerment services in 2014, we found that its network is still heavily weighted in certain side by the lack of the utilization and the foundation of the network.

The Effect of an Empowerment Health Management Program on Self-esteem and the Quality of Life for the Urban Elderly (역량강화 건강관리 프로그램이 도시독거노인의 자아존중감과 삶의 질에 미치는 효과)

  • Objectives: The purpose was to test the effect of an empowerment health management program on self-esteem and the quality of life for the elderly who live in cities. Methods: Forty-three elders were randomly assigned to either the experimental group that received the intervention to participate in one year's empowerment practice (one home visiting per week and phone counselling) (n=21) or to the control group that got home visiting only (n=22). The data was analyzed using ANCOVA. Results: There was no significant difference in the self-esteem score between the two groups after the intervention. But the quality of life score of the experimental group was significantly different from that of the control group after the intervention. Conclusions: The health management intervention using empowerment for the elderly living alone with chronic diseases in urban areas had positive effects on the quality of life. Therefore this intervention can be broadly applied to other elders living alone with chronic diseases in urban areas.

Effects of socio-ecological factors on mental health of the residents in a single room occupancy (Jjok-bang) of South Korea (사회생태적 모델을 적용한 쪽방 주민의 정신건강 영향요인 분석)

  • Objectives: Residents of a single room occupancy (Jjok-bang) in Seoul are at high risk of having mental health issues. The majority of residents live in single households with past traumatic experiences including self-deprivation and social exclusion. This study was to investigate the association between mental health and socio-ecological factors at the intrapersonal and community levels. Methods: We conducted face-to-face surveys in Dongja-dong Jjok-bang area in June, 2014. Of 78 participants, 76% were male and the mean age was 60 years (SD=11.53). A multiple regression was used to analyze the association among depression, a sense of well-being, socio-ecological factors, and perceived empowerment and community solidarity. Results: Perceived empowerment (${\beta}=0.83$; 95% CI=0.40, 1.26) and community solidarity (${\beta}=0.52$; 95% CI=0.04, 1.01) were positively associated with a sense of well-being. Participants with empowerment (${\beta}=-2.55$; 95% CI=-4.86, -0.23) and those with community solidarity (${\beta}=-2.36$; 95% CI=-4.94, 0.21) were negatively associated with being depressed. Conclusion: Mental health of the residents in Jjok-bang was more influenced by empowerment and community solidarity than socio-demographic factors. It is necessary to improve public health infrastructures that can enable the residents to enhance empowerment and community solidarity utilizing socio-ecological perspectives.

The Performance, Autonomy, Empowerment and Organizational Commitment of the Preceptors (프리셉터의 업무수행, 자율성, 임파워먼트, 조직몰입에 대한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the performance, autonomy, and organizational commitment of the preceptors. Methods : The sample consisted of 29 nurses in one university hospital. The data were collected through a questionnaire survey of performance, autonomy, empowerment, and organizational commitment conducted from May through August. 30, 2003. The subjects accepted preceptor training for 26 hours, which was conducted by a researcher. The contents of the training program consisted of an introduction to preceptorship, nursing organization, teaching and learning methods, interpersonal relationships, organizational management, self management, and basic nursing practice. Analysis was performed by SPSS for percentile, mean, standard deviation, and correlation using the paired t-test. Results : Our study results showed that performance, autonomy, empowerment, and organizational commitment were significantly altered by training. After education for preceptors, performance, autonomy, empowerment, and organizational commitment were all enhanced. Performance was related with empowerment, and not with autonomy. Conclusion : This study suggests that the application of preceptorship as a nursing management intervention can benefit organizational efficiency.

Convergent Relationship between Organizational commitment, Empowerment, Work Environment of Dental Hygienist (치과위생사의 조직몰입도, 내부역량, 근무환경의 융합적 관련성)

  • This study aims to measure between organizational commitment, empowerment and working environment of dental hygienists. The subjects of the study were surveyed by 245 dental hygienists in Daegu and some areas of Gyeongbuk from May 2019 to October 2019. Technical statistics, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient were analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 program. The results of organizational commitment, empowerment and relevance to the working environment showed a positive correlation, indicating that the higher the organizational commitment among dental hygienists, the higher the individual's empowerment and the better the working environment. The medical institution has proposed measures to improve the empowerment and organizational commitment of dental hygienists, and suggests the need to develop programs to improve the work environment of dental clinic.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent of empowerment, task performance and job satisfaction perceived by hospital nurses and the relationship among those variables. Methods: The sample consisted of 261 nurses from a university affiliated hospital. Data were collected with self-administrated questionnaires including empowerment, performance and job satisfaction and analyzed using mean, standard deviation, ANOVA and $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test. Results: The mean scores of variables were as follows. Empowerment was 4.6472, task performance was 3.7814, and job satisfaction was 3.1240. The older, more educated and more experienced nurses showed more empowered and higher job performed than the younger, less educated and less experienced nurses. Empowerment had a positive correlation with task performance and job satisfaction. Conclusions: The results imply that hospital should develop the empowerment program for nurses to be more job performed and satisfied.

Effects of a Multi-disciplinary Approached, Empowerment Theory Based Self-management Intervention in Older Adults with Chronic Illness (만성질환 노인에서 임파워먼트 이론에 근거한 다학제적 자기관리 프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a multi-disciplinary self-management intervention based on empowerment theory and to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention for older adults with chronic illness. Methods: A randomized controlled trial design was used with 43 Korean older adults with chronic illness (Experimental group=22, Control group=21). The intervention consisted of two phases: (1) 8-week multi-disciplinary, team guided, group-based health education, exercise session, and individual empowerment counseling, (2) 16-week self-help group activities including weekly exercise and group discussion to maintain acquired self-management skills and problem-solving skills. Baseline, 8-week, and 24-week assessments measured health empowerment, exercise self-efficacy, physical activity, and physical function. Results: Health empowerment, physical activity, and physical function in the experimental group increased significantly compared to the control group over time. Exercise self-efficacy significantly increased in experimental group over time but there was no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: The self-management program based on empowerment theory improved health empowerment, physical activity, and physical function in older adults. The study finding suggests that a health empowerment strategy may be an effective approach for older adults with multiple chronic illnesses in terms of achieving a sense of control over their chronic illness and actively engaging self-management.
