An Application of Family-Friendly Policy for Use of Female Resource (여성인적자원의 활용을 위한 가족친화적 정책의 적용)

  • Many women experience the conflicting demands of work and family life according to the increase of employed women. Their demand for balance of two spheres makes the companies have family friendly policy. Family friendly policy is win-win policy which gives benefits to the employers and the employees by helping the employees to balance of their lives. But this policy has been recognized as the one for women and which only companies have to carry out. This study aims to suggest and extend the applicable field of the family friendly policy, and press that the whole society have to be family friendly. So, this study examined the necessity of family friendly policy in the aspects of company and society. And it showed how the employers, policy makers, general public society and communities support the family by carrying out and applying the policy in USA.

A Study on Clothing Recycling Disposition Behavior -Focusing on the Unmarried Women Workers- (의복재활용처분행동에 관한 연구 -미온 취업여성의 사장의복을 중심으로-)

  • This study puts an emphasis on the importance clothing and its reuse, dealing with the unmarried women workers who will be main domestic consumers. Questionnaire survey method was used in this research. The sample was taken from 546 unmarried women workers. The major findings are summarized as follows, it was found that Factor I was the cause of unplanned clothing management, Factor II was the cause of clothing modification and body type changes and Factors III was the cause of fashionmongering. Second, it was shown that as for experiences in hoarded clothing recycling disposition behavior subjective social strate had the high level, the group of sale and technical jobs / self-employed jobs had the higher level than the group of specialized skil / management jobs, the group in office-going and leaving clothing had the higher level than the group of people in separate uniform as working dress and the group of those experienced in environmental education had the high level.

An effect of the financial resources on the willingness to marriage formation among the never married in their 30s (30대 미혼남녀의 결혼의향에 대한 경제자원의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that influence the willingness to marriage initiation(WMI) among the never married in their 30s. In particular, we examine the effect of financial resources on the WMI. A data set from the National Survey of Marriage and Childbirth (2009 Wave) were analyzed. We find that the effect of financial resources on the WMI are different by gender. Home ownership is a statistically significant factor in the logistic regression model for men, but not in the model for women. Women with higher earnings are more likely to be single and unemployed men are more likely to be single than employed men. In the Korean societal contexts, these findings support the bi-standard of financial resources between male and female in the marriage market.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the strategies that may influence the marital satisfaction of dual-earner men and women. General linear model, Pearson's correlation analysis, Stepwise multiple regression were employed for data analysis. the subjects are 396 dual-earner men and women. The result from the research were as follows: 1) coping strategy use differs significantly by life cycle stage. 2) The following strategies significantly correlated with the level of marital satisfaction: cognitive restructuring, delegation. using social support, modifying standards, personal time reducing. 3) The result of stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that strategies which predict the level of marital satisfaction were cognitive restructuring, delegating, using social support, personal time reducing. these finding give us significant practical implications for social work intervention.

A Study of Urban Employed Housewives' Dynamics of Family System and Their Economic Well-Being (도시 취업주부 가계의 가족체계역동성 및 경제복지감)

  • We analyzed the dynamics of the family system and the economic well-being by utilizing the socio-demographic objective economic and subjective economic factors of urban employed housewives. The survey was conducted in Seoul and three other major cities. The subjects consisted of employed housewives in these areas who were currently cohabiting with their spouses and had at least one child. The preliminary and main survey questionnaires were distributed between November 12, 2001 and February 27, 2002, and 254 survey questionnaires were collected and analyzed We applied the frequency, average, percentage, Cronbach's $\alpha$, simple regression and multiple regression analysis by using SPSS/PC WIN. The findings were as follows. First, the mean score of the availability of life information was 3.21. Second, when the stability of husband occupation increased, the dynamics of family system worked very well. Third, the dynamics of family system didn't have any influence on the economic well-being.

Current Status and Factors Affecting Prenatal Care by Married Immigrant Women (결혼이민여성의 산전관리 실태와 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors affecting prenatal care (PNC) by married immigrant women. Methods: This study was a secondary analysis of "Reproductive Health Status of Married Immigrant Women and Policy Directions in Korea" by the Korea Institute for Health & Social Affairs. The participants were 727 married immigrant women from Asia. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, $x^2$ test and logistic regression with SPSS 14.0. Results: Of the 727 women interviewed, 91.7% visited prenatal clinic. However, first time for PNC was late and total number of PNC was lower (9.07) than the average of Korean women. Timing and number of PNC in rural area were later and fewer than those in urban area. PNC by these women was significantly lower in those who had lived in Korea longer and for those who the employed. However, PNC was significantly higher in those who attended health education during pregnancy and had not experienced premature delivery. Those who attended health education during pregnancy (OR=2.84, CI=1.49~5.40) or were unemployed (OR=0.51, CI=0.26~0.99) were more likely to have PNC. Conclusion: These findings illustrate the need to strengthen the public information and provide special services to their demands about PNC for married immigrant women.

Effect of Selection Attributes for Home Meal Replacement(HMR) on Purchasing of Married Women Living in a City (도시 기혼여성의 간편가정식 선택속성이 구매에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the purchasing behavior and selection attributes for Home Meal Replacement (HMR) and to identify the selection attributes affecting purchasing frequency and purchasing costs of married women living in a city. Among 837 questionnaires distributed to HMR married women consumers, 752 complete questionnaires (89.8%) were analyzed. The younger married women group showed higher frequency of purchasing HMR than the older age group. The 20s and 30s age groups showed higher purchasing costs for HMR than the 40s and older age groups. A higher proportion of employed married women purchased HMR three or more times per week and spent an average of more than 20,000 won per purchase in comparison with unemployed married women. HMR selection attributes were classified into five factors: 'taste and sanitation', 'economic efficiency', 'health and nutrition', 'convenience', and 'reliability and awareness'; mean scores of these factors' importance levels were 4.28, 3.93, 3.59, 3.54, and 3.50 out of 5 points, respectively. The importance level of 'taste and sanitation' factor was significantly greater as married women's age decreased. However, the importance level of 'health and nutrition' factor was significantly greater as married women's age increased. The results of the logistic regression analyses indicate that the 'taste and sanitation' and 'health and nutrition' factors affected frequency of purchasing HMR. The 'reliability and awareness' factor had the most significant impact on cost per purchasing HMR. Therefore, a product differentiation strategy according to married women's age and employment status should be applied. Product qualities and brand value should be improved to enhance competition in the HMR market.

Middle-aged women's experiences of physical activity for managing menopausal symptoms: a phenomenological study (폐경증상 관리를 위한 중년 여성의 신체활동 참여 경험: 현상학적 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to comprehensively understand and describe the meaning of physical activity for managing menopausal symptoms in middle-aged women. Methods: This study targeted middle-aged women with menopausal symptoms who participated in regular exercise at least three times a week for more than 12 weeks. Nine participants were individually interviewed via in-depth face-to-face interviews, and participatory observation was also employed. Colaizzi's phenomenological qualitative research method was applied for analysis. Results: Participants were asked, "What does it means to participate in physical activity at this time of your life?" Fourteen codes, six themes, and three theme clusters were derived for the meaning of physical activity for managing menopausal symptoms these middle-aged women. The six themes were "reviving the exhausted body and mind," "being free from the yoke of pain," "being settled in life," "finding oneself and becoming altruistic," "striving while anticipating change," and "equipping the body and mind." The three theme clusters were "overcoming my past pain," "taking the initiative for today's life," and "moving towards new change." Conclusion: The narratives revealed that physical activity allowed women to overcome menopausal symptoms, the burden of relationships, and stress, thereby enabling them to make positive changes in their lives and have expectations for the future. Thus, physical activity was a positive force in a healthy menopausal transition for women with menopausal symptoms. The findings of this study can be used to encourage physical activity in peri-menopausal women and to develop physical activity programs for managing menopausal symptoms.

Who is the Busiest in Korea? A Study on Gender Difference in Time Pressure (남녀의 시간압박인식 차이와 관련요인 탐색)

  • The aim of this study was to get answers to following research questions: Who are the busy people in such a speedy society like Korea? How the daily schedules of busy people might look like? What is the priority of activity that appear in their schedules?, And what is the gender difference? The sample of study came form the 2004 Korean Time Diary Data which have been collected by Korean National Statistical Office. The sample consisted of 11,976 married men and women, whose age range from 25-54 (women 49.7% of the sample). Dependent variable was time pressure measured in one item question with 4-likert scale. Socio-demographic factors and the amount of time in work/family role and other relevant activities were considered as well as gender. The results of the study showed us that men perceived more time deficit compared to women. Especially, employed men were the most time poor group, followed by employed women, unemployed women and unemployed men. The results showed that, even though there were similarities in the impact of relevant factors, men's time pressure were tightly linked with their work role and social status, while women's time pressure were responsive to both their role as a mother and as a worker. Nowadays, Korean fathers appear to face new expectation that they need to be involved in family just like mothers do. However, men and women still seems to traverse through different time path, which may create both burden and conflict to either party. Policy implication and detailed suggestions were discussed.

Married Women's contingent Work and Work/Family Conflicts - Concentrating on Study Paper Instructors (기혼여성의 비정규 노동과 일/가족 갈등 -학습지 교사를 중심으로)

  • The goal of this study is to analyze the complicated and diverse nature of the relationship between work and family life for the study paper instructors of whom are married women. The survey data for these analyses were from an in depth interview which was conducted with the 21 contingent female workers as study samples. They are the married women, who started to work or returned to work after an absence to raise a family. The results showed that in reality the contingent female worker faced worse working conditions than the full time female labour force, even if women were determined to be a study paper instructor to meet work and family demand. It was the contingent women worker with a short time work experience who were in the worst position tlo adjust their working arrangements to suit their family needs and were confronted with the greater inter-role friction as a vulnerable group. The study revealed that instrumental and emotional support of husband has a positive effect on maintaining job role and lessening role conflicts and stress of the women. The work/family relationship indicated its double side, conflict and support. The women simply could not afford to depend on the psychological support form family in the midst of the inferior employment conditions and the absence of social support. This strategy, however, was based on the family ideology and the patriarchal gender division of labor. It caused the overload, stress and poor health of women involving some risk to give up the work.
