  • This study explores a coefficient-based seismic capacity assessment method with a special emphasis on low-rise masonry in-filled (MI) reinforced concrete (RC) buildings subjected to earthquake motion. The coefficient-based method without requiring any complicated finite element analysis is a simplified procedure to assess the maximum spectral acceleration capacity of buildings. This paper first compares the fundamental periods of MI RC structures obtained, respectively, from experimental period data and empirical period-height formulas. The coefficient-based method for low-rise masonry buildings is then calibrated by the published experimental results obtained from shaking table tests. The comparison of the experimental and estimated results indicates that the simplified coefficient-based method can provide good approximations of the maximum spectral accelerations at peak loads of the low-rise masonry reinforced concrete buildings if a proper set of drift factors and initial fundamental vibration periods of structures are used.

  • Hull girder stress monitoring system for container ship uses four long-base-strain-gages at mid-ship to monitor the resultant stresses and the applied moment components of horizontal, vertical and torsional moments. The bending moments are estimated by using the conventional strain-moment relations, however, the torsional moment related to the warping strain requires the assumption of the shape of torsional moments over the hull girder. Though this shape could be a sine function with an adequate period, it largely depends upon certain empirical formulas. This paper introduces additional four long-base-strain-gages at mid-ship to derive the longitudinal slope of the warping strain because this slope is directly related to the torsional moment by Bi-moment concept. An open-channel-type cantilever beam has been selected as a simplified model for container ship and the result has proved that the suggested concepts can estimate the torsional component accurately. Finally this method can become reliable technique to derive all external moments in hull girder stress monitoring system for container ships.

  • The natural period calculation equations specified in the current building code are empirical formulas that depend on height and material type of the structure. Building with the upper wall and lower frame type is a unique structure which composed of two different structural system This type of structure needs either the deep transfer girder or the thick transfer plate that brings the sudden change of stiffness and mass. Therefore the natural period equations recommended by the current code can not be applied directly. In this study the natural period of building with typical plan obtained by dynamci analysis is compared with that of various codes. Ad approximate estimation equation for the natural period of building with the upper wall and lower frame type obtained by regression analysis is recommended. by the current code can not be applied directly. • This paper presents the comparison and evaluation of the existing test results and empirical formulas of high-strength concrete available in the literature for various types of models to describe the stress-strain relationship. The range of concrete compressive strength taken into account in this study was 400 to 1200kg/㎠ and the comprehensive assessment of each linearly varying ascending part and brittle type of descending one of each model was carried out. The results show that the fixed curve equation seems to be recommended to well describe the ascending part and so does Fafitis' exponential equation for the descending part in the stress-strain relationship of the high and ultra high-strength concrete.

  • Despite the increasing necessity of accurate estimation of ring-stiffened cylinders'ultimate strength, the complex structural behavior of cylinders has made their design mainly depend on empirical formulas mostly based on limited test data rather than theoretical background. This paper has developed the imperfection method which enables the ultimate strength analysis of buckling-sensitive structures by combining two separate functions covered by common commercial finite element softwares, which are linear elastic buckling analysis and nonlinear stress analysis. Developed method was applied to two of the world most renowned softwares, MSC/NASTRAN and ABAQUS, for the analysis of ring-stiffened cylinders and unexpectedly big difference in their analysis results was found. This tells that many widely used commercial softwares have their different strong points and weak points and the choice of commercial software should be cautiously made after thorough inspection. This paper ends with some useful information about which of the two aforementioned softwares is more respectively for the linear elastic buckling analysis and the ultimate strength analysis of ring-stiffened cylinders.

  • In this paper 30 kVA Super-Conducting Generator's test and analysis results of OCC and SCC are presented. Also the test and FE analysis results of the generator under 1.2, 2.4, and 3.6[kW] load are described. For FE analysis of the generator's performance, the external circuit is coupled with the FE region. The generator's end winding reactance is obtained based on the design data, actual dimension, preliminary FE analysis, and empirical formulas. The comparison of FE analysis coupled with external circuit to the test results shows a good agreement.

  • Lighting currents are one of major influences on the dynamic performance of ground electrodes. High lighting current intensity changes in the dynamic grounding performance due to ionization of the soil and very fast fronted pulses. The previous analysis has often been based on quasi-static approximation that is not applicable to very fast fronted pulses. To extend the analysis to fast fronted pulses in this paper, the full-wave analysis method based in the rigorous electromagnetic-field theory approach is used and the effects of the ionization of the soil me disregarded. Based on the simulation results, the empirical formulas applicable for slow and very fast fronted lightning current pulses me reviewed; therefore the validity of the theoretical approach is verified through comparison between the calculated and measured results.

  • Ice resistance is defined as the time average of all longitudinal forces due to ice acting on the ship. Estimation of ship's resistance in ice-covered waters is very important to both designers and shipbuilders since it is closely related to propulsion of a ship and it determines the engine power of the ship. Good ice performance requires ice resistance should be as low as possible to allow different manoeuvres. In this paper, different numerical methods are presented to calculate ice resistance, including semi-analytical method and empirical methods. A model test of an icebreaking vessel that was done in an ice basin has been introduced for going straight ahead in level ice at low speed. Then the comparison between model test results and numerical results are made. Some discussions and suggestions are presented as well to provide an insight into icebreaking vessel design at early stage.

  • The seismic design of embankment dams requires more comprehensive studies to understand the behaviour of dams. Deformations primarily control this behaviour occur during or after earthquake loading. Dam failures and incidents show that the impacts of deformations should be reviewed for existing and new embankment dams. Overtopping erosion failure can occur if crest deformations exceed the freeboard at the time of the deformations. Therefore, crest settlement is one of the most critical deformations. This study developed empirical formulas using Gene Expression Programming (GEP) based on 88 cases. In the analyses, dam height (Hd), alluvium thickness (Ha), the magnitude-acceleration-factor (MAF) values developed based on earthquake magnitude (Mw) and peak ground acceleration (PGA) within this study have been chosen as variables. Results show that GEP models developed in the paper are remarkably robust and accessible tools to predict earthquake-induced crest settlement of embankment dams and perform superior to the existing formulation. Also, dam engineering professionals can use them practically because the variables of prediction equations are easily accessible after the earthquake.

  • Soil erosion due to climate change is one of the global environmental issues. Especially, Korea is vulnerable to soil erosion as the frequency of extreme rainfall events and rainfall intensity are increasing. Soil erosion causes various problems such as reduced farmlands, deterioration of water quality in rivers, etc. To these severe problems, understanding the process of soil erosion is the first process. Then, it is necessary to quantify and analyze soil ersoion using an erosion model. Soil erosion models are divided into empirical, conceptual, and physics-based models according to the structures and characteristics of models. This study used GSSHA (Gridded Surface Subsurface Hydrologic Analysis), the physics-based erosion model, running on WMS (Watershed Modeling System) to analyze soil erosion vulnerability of the CheonCheon watershed. In addition, we compared the six sediment transport capacity formulas provided in the model and evaluated the equations fir on this study site. Therefore, this result can be as a primary tool for soil conservation management.
