  • The research was conducted to investigate the effect of drama education on the empathy and prosocial behavior abilities of middle school students. A total of 45 students participated in this study. Data were obtained through the use of the IRI(Interpersonal Reactivity Index) and the prosocial behavior scales. Those scales were administered to the group of students as a pre-test. Then, drama education was provided for 14 weeks for the group. The same scale was applied again to the group as a post test once the drama education was completed. The t-test on the differences between pre- and post test scores was used to analyze the effects of the program. The results showed that drama education had a statistically significant effect on the empathy and prosocial behavior abilities of students in the group. Finally, this study suggested implications for future performance arts education programs.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine 'Design Thinking' based Chemistry Class program as an education strategy for core competence of creative convergence talent. The program stages were modified and supplemented into eight stages, including 'Knowledge Understand', 'Empathy', 'Sharing perspective', 'Ideate', '1st Prototype', '1st Test', '2nd Prototype', and '2nd Test', so that the 'Design Thinking Process in Science Education' can be applied to the chemistry class. Considering the linkage between the 2015 and 2009 revised national curriculum, the achievement criteria were selected, and the lesson plans and student activity sheet were developed according to the themes to be met. Four thematic educational programs were developed and applied to Chemistry I for the second grade of high school students from March to August. The results were verified through qualitative data analysis of the class scene and pre- and post-test based on inventories of 'Empathy' 'STEAM educational competence', 'Problem solving process'. As a result of applying the developed program, 'empathy' showed a significant improvement in empathy with others and empathy with the problem situation. In 'STEAM educational competence', there was a significant enhancement in science and design competence. In the 'problem finding process', the problem definition, problem solution design, and problem-solving review were significantly improved in the 'problem-solving process'. The results of this study provided implications for the applicability of design thinking - based chemistry classes and its educational effect.

  • Objective: This study examined the relationships among teachers' empathy ability, children's peer competence and teacher-child relationships. Methods: 180 teachers and 360 children from 3 to 5 years old were included in the study. The research variables were measured by teachers' self-report through questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, and three-step mediated regression analysis. Results: First, teachers' empathy ability and teacher-child relationship showed significant differences according to teacher variables (age, marital status, parental status). And children's peer competence was significantly different according to gender. Second, intimacy which was a subfactor of teacher-child relationships showed a perfect mediating role in the association between teachers' empathy ability and peer competence. Conclusion/Implications: These results suggest the importance of teacher-child's intimate relationships since it affects the child's peer competence significantly. In this study, it was found that, in order to help foster the teacher's empathic ability and teacher-child relationships which have positive effects on the child's desirable peer formation, continuous teacher education and diverse studies are needed.

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of a loving-kindness and compassion meditation program on the empathy, emotion, and stress of nursing college students. Methods: A pre-posttest experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was applied. The participants were 39 nursing college students (experimental group: 19, control group: 20). The loving-kindness and compassion meditation program for nursing college students took 8 weeks. Data was collected from February 2016 to March 2016, and was analyzed by Chi-square test and independent t-test using IBM SPSS/WIN 19.0. Results: The difference between the experiment group and control group was statistically significant in empathy, negative affect, and perceived stress. Conclusion: The results indicate that the loving-kindness and compassion meditation program was effective for empathy improvement and stress management of nursing college students.

  • Previous multi-cultural education on elementary school students has focused on improving negative perceptions on multi-culture rather than enhancing morality among student, thus the outcomes seem to be not successful as intended. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between multi-cultural acceptance and pro-social behavior and to investigate the role of empathy as mediator in the relationships between these two variables. A convenience sample of 457 elementary school students in I city of Kyeonggi-do was employed. Results showed that multi-cultural acceptance was significantly associated with pro-social behavior and empathy had partially mediated the relationship between multi-cultural acceptance and pro-social behavior controlling for gender, grade, multi-cultural education. Findings suggest that multi-cultural education need to be incorporated into moral education course for improving pro-social behavior and empathy of students.

  • In this study, data were collected from currently employed early childhood teachers in order to explore the factors affecting the teacher efficacy of early childhood teachers and 202 data were analyzed. Frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed on the subjects' general characteristics, empathy, resilience, and teacher efficacy. As a result of the study, factors influencing early childhood teachers' teacher efficacy were identified as educational experience, job achievement, empathy, and resilience, and the explanatory power of the variable was 57.2% (F=45.848, p<.001). In conclusion, the higher the resilience (β=.480), job achievement (β=.286), teaching experience (β=.197), and empathy (β=.141) of early childhood teachers the higher the teacher efficacy was. Therefore, the development and education of a curriculum that combines regular and non-regular education programs that can improve resilience, job achievement, and empathy from the period as pre-service teachers are required to improve teacher efficacy of early childhood teachers.

  • This study aimed to investigate the role of scientific empathy in influencing students' productive disciplinary engagement in scientific activities and analyze the key factors of scientific empathy that manifest during this process. Twelve fifth-grade students were divided into three subgroups based on their general empathic abilities. Lessons promoting productive disciplinary engagement, integrating design thinking processes, were conducted. Subgroup discourse analysis during idea generation and prototype stages, two of five problem-solving steps, enabled observation of scientific empathy and practice aspects. The results showed that applying scientific empathy effectively through design thinking facilitated students' productive disciplinary engagement in science. In the idea generation stage, we observed an initial increase followed by a decrease in scientific empathy and practice utterances, while during the prototyping stage, utterance frequency increased, particularly in the later part. However, subgroups with lower empathic abilities displayed decreased discourse frequency in scientific empathy and practice during the prototype stage due to a lack of collaborative communication. Across all empathic ability levels, the students articulated all five key factors of scientific empathy through their utterances in situations involving productive science engagement. In the high empathic ability subgroup, empathic understanding and concern were emphasized, whereas in the low empathic ability subgroup, sensitivity, scientific imagination, and situational interest, factors of empathizing with the research object, were prominent. These results indicate that experiences of scientific empathy with research objects, beyond general empathetic abilities, serve as a distinct and crucial factor in stimulating diverse participation and sustaining students' productive engagement in scientific activities during science classes. By suggesting the potential multidimensional impact of scientific empathy on productive disciplinary engagement, this study contributes to discussions on the theoretical structure and stability of scientific empathy in science education.

  • The study was done to investigate the mediating effects of communication ability on the relationship among self-awareness, empathy, emotional intelligence and interpersonal competence of nursing students. Data on subject's self-awareness, empathy, emotional intelligence and interpersonal competence were collected using a structured self-reporting questionnaire. During September and December 2019, data were collected from 282 nursing students in J and K cities. Data were analyzed using three-step mediated regression analysis with the SPSS WIN 21.0 programs. Self-awareness, empathy, emotional intelligence and communication ability were positively correlated with interpersonal competence of nursing students. Also, communication ability had a partial mediating effect on the relationship among self-awareness, empathy, emotion intelligence and interpersonal competence. These finding indicate that it will be more effective to education strategies that can increase self-awareness, empathy, emotional intelligence and communication ability together when developing education programs that improve interpersonal competence.
