Using Gamification Development of Sex Education Program (Ethical Perspective) for Youth

  • Purpose: To prevent and respond to youth sexual problems that are becoming more serious with digital development, this study sought to develop a sex education program that applies gamification as an effective method for youth who are digital natives. Research design, data and methodology: To develop a sex education program for teenagers, elements of gamification were considered based on Dick and Kerry's teaching system design model. The learning content reflected UNESCO's 'Comprehensive Sex Education Guidelines'. In addition, it was designed to enable students to learn about ethics and morals from a social and emotional aspect. Results: A four-session distance learning sex education program was developed for first-year high school students. To learn about gender sensitivity, sexual relationships, sexuality, and healthy sexual behavior, we developed a story that reflects the mission and quest for sex education. It included leaderboards, time limits, and levels, and also utilized mechanics such as points and items. Edutech tools include video content, Google Sheets, Zoom, Padlet, and Mentimeter. Conclusions: This study aims to improve learning effectiveness, satisfaction, and immersion by developing a sex education program for youth using gamification that promotes active learner participation and motivation.

Emotion-based Video Scene Retrieval using Interactive Genetic Algorithm (대화형 유전자 알고리즘을 이용한 감성기반 비디오 장면 검색)

  • An emotion-based video scene retrieval algorithm is proposed in this paper. First, abrupt/gradual shot boundaries are detected in the video clip representing a specific story Then, five video features such as 'average color histogram' 'average brightness', 'average edge histogram', 'average shot duration', and 'gradual change rate' are extracted from each of the videos and mapping between these features and the emotional space that user has in mind is achieved by an interactive genetic algorithm. Once the proposed algorithm has selected videos that contain the corresponding emotion from initial population of videos, feature vectors from the selected videos are regarded as chromosomes and a genetic crossover is applied over them. Next, new chromosomes after crossover and feature vectors in the database videos are compared based on the similarity function to obtain the most similar videos as solutions of the next generation. By iterating above procedures, new population of videos that user has in mind are retrieved. In order to show the validity of the proposed method, six example categories such as 'action', 'excitement', 'suspense', 'quietness', 'relaxation', 'happiness' are used as emotions for experiments. Over 300 commercial videos, retrieval results show 70% effectiveness in average.

Generating Extreme Close-up Shot Dataset Based On ROI Detection For Classifying Shots Using Artificial Neural Network (인공신경망을 이용한 샷 사이즈 분류를 위한 ROI 탐지 기반의 익스트림 클로즈업 샷 데이터 셋 생성)

  • This study aims to analyze movies which contain various stories according to the size of their shots. To achieve this, it is needed to classify dataset according to the shot size, such as extreme close-up shots, close-up shots, medium shots, full shots, and long shots. However, a typical video storytelling is mainly composed of close-up shots, medium shots, full shots, and long shots, it is not an easy task to construct an appropriate dataset for extreme close-up shots. To solve this, we propose an image cropping method based on the region of interest (ROI) detection. In this paper, we use the face detection and saliency detection to estimate the ROI. By cropping the ROI of close-up images, we generate extreme close-up images. The dataset which is enriched by proposed method is utilized to construct a model for classifying shots based on its size. The study can help to analyze the emotional changes of characters in video stories and to predict how the composition of the story changes over time. If AI is used more actively in the future in entertainment fields, it is expected to affect the automatic adjustment and creation of characters, dialogue, and image editing.

Designing female-oriented computer games: Emotional expression

  • Recently, as the number of female players has increased rapidly, the electronic gaming industry has begun to look at ways to appeal to the largely untapped female market. According to the latest game market investigative report by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), the total number of game players in China increased by 24.8% in 2009, reached 69,130,000 people, and 38.9% of them are female players. This growth in the number of female player is corroborated by a series of investigative reports from IResearch Company in Shanghai, China: from 2003 to 2009, the number of female players grew from 8% to more than 49%. Therefore, no matter how much attention the game production companies have given to male players or how they have ignored the female players before, the companies would be sensible to face up this reality and adjust their marketing policy a bit more. This article analyzes gender preferences in video games which shows that male players are more likely to be attracted to elements of aggression, violence, competition and fast action in electronic game-playing, while female players are drawn to emotional and social aspects of the games such as an understanding of character relationships. The literatures cited indicates that female players also show apparent preference for games with familiar environments, games that allow players to work together, games that have more than one way to win, and games in which characters do not die. It also discusses the characteristics of female-friendly games from the aspect of emotion, pointing out that the simulation games involving pet, dressing-up, and social simulation games are very popular with female players. Because these are the most suitable game types to fill with emotions of love, share, jealousy, superiority, mystery, these are absolutely attractive to female players. Finally, in accord with the above, I propose some principles of designing female-oriented games, including presenting a good-looking leading character, making the story interesting with "live" NPCs(Non-Playing Characters), and finding ways to satisfy female nature instincts such as taking care of others and the inborn interest of classifying and selecting.
