  • New $\pi$-conjugated polymer with vinylene linkage, poly((10-hexyl-3,7-phenothiazine)-alt-(4-(4-butyl-phenyl)- 3,5-diphenyl-4H-[1,2,4]triazole)-3,5-vinylene) (PTV-TAZ) was synthesized by the Heck coupling reaction. The photoluminescence (PL) maximum wavelength and the band gap energy of PTV-TAZ film were 555 nm and 2.41 eV, respectively. The HOMO energy level of PTV-TAZ was -4.99 eV, which was slightly lower than that of PTV (-4.89 eV). Electron deficient aromatic 1,2,4-triazole (TAZ) in the polymer backbone does not affect the HOMO energy level significantly. The maximum efficiency and brightness of double layer structured electroluminescent (EL) device (ITO/PEDOT (30 nm)/PTV-TAZ (60 nm)/Al) were 0.247 cd/A and 553 cd/$m^2$, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of the device based PTV (1.65 ${\times}\;10^{-4}$ cd/A and 4.3 cd/$m^2$). This is due to that TAZ unit improves electron transporting ability in the emissive layer. The turn-on voltage (defined as the voltage required to give a luminescence of 1 cd/$m^2$) of brightness of the device based on PTV-TAZ was 12.0 V, which was similar to that the based on PTV (11.5 V). This is due to that the ionization potential of PTV-TAZ is very similar to that of PTV.

  • An OLED(Organic Light-Emitting Diode) device based on the emissive electroluminescent layer a film of organic materials. OLED is used for many electronic devices such as TV, mobile phones, handheld games consoles. ULVAC's mass production systems are indispensable to the manufacturing of OLED device. ULVAC is a manufacturer and worldwide supplier of equipment and vacuum systems for the OLED, LCD, Semiconductor, Electronics, Optical device and related high technology industries. The SMD Series are single-substrate sputtering systems for deposition of films such as metal films and TCO (Transparent Conductive Oxide) films. ULVAC has delivered a large number of these systems not only Organic Evaporating systems but also LTPS CVD systems. The most important technology of thin-film encapsulation (TFE) is preventing moisture($H_2O$) and oxygen permeation into flexible OLED devices. As a polymer substrate does not offer the same barrier performance as glass substrate, the TFE should be developed on both the bottom and top side of the device layers for sufficient lifetimes. This report provides a review of promising thin-film barrier technologies as well as the WVTR(Water Vapor Transmission Rate) properties. Multilayer thin-film deposition technology of organic and inorganic layer is very effective method for increasing barrier performance of OLED device. Gases and water in the organic evaporating system is having a strong influence as impurities to OLED device. CRYO pump is one of the very useful vacuum components to reduce above impurities. There for CRYO pump is faster than conventional TMP exhaust velocity of gases and water. So, we suggest new method to make a good vacuum condition which is CRYO Trap addition on OLED evaporator. Alignment accuracy is one of the key technologies to perform high resolution OLED device. In order to reduce vibration characteristic of CRYO pump, ULVAC has developed low vibration CRYO pumps to achieve high resolution alignment performance between Metal mask and substrate. This report also includes ULVAC's approach for these issues.

  • In the structure of ITO/N,N'-diphenyl-N,N' bis (3-methylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine(TPD)/tris (8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum$(Alq_3)$/Al device, we studied the efficiency improvement of organic light-emitting diodes due to variation of deposition rate of TPD materials. The thickness of TPD and $Alq_3$ was manufactured 40 nm, 60 nm, respectively under a base pressure of $5\times10^{-6}$Torr using a thermal evaporation. The $Alq_3$ used for an electron-transport and emissive layer were evaporated to be at a deposition rate of 2.5 $\AA$/s. When the deposition rate of TPD increased from 1.5 to 3.0 $\AA$/s, we found that the average roughness is rather smoother, external quantum efficiency is superior to the others when the deposition rate of TPD is 2.5 $\AA$/s. Compared to the ones from the devices made with the deposition rate of TPD 3.0 $\AA$/s, the external quantum efficiency was improved by a factor of eight.

  • To achieve high-performance colloidal quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs), the use of a densely packed QD film is crucial to prevent the formation of leakage current pathways and increase in interface resistance. Spin coating is the most common method to deposit QDs; however, this method often produces pinholes that can act as short-circuit paths within devices. Since state-of-the-art QD-LEDs typically employ mono- or bi-layer QDs as an emissive layer because of their low conductivities, the use of a densely packed and pinhole-free QD film is essential. Herein, we introduce the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique as a deposition method for the fabricate densely packed QD films in QD-LEDs. The LB technique successfully transfers a highly dense monolayer of QDs onto the substrate, and multilayer deposition is performed by repeating the transfer process. To validate the comparability of the LB technique with the standard QD-LED fabrication process, we fabricate and compare the performance of LB-based QD-LEDs to that of the spin-coating-based device. Owing to the non-destructiveness of the LB technique, the electroluminescence efficiency of the LB-based QD-LEDs is similar to that of the standard spin coating-based device. Thus, the LB technique is promising for use in optoelectronic applications.

  • A new $\pi$-conjugated polymer, poly[(2-methoxy-(5-(2-(4-oxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole)-hexyloxy))-1,4-pheny1ene-1,2-etheny1ene-alt-(10-hexyl-3,7-phenothiazine )-1,2-ethenylene] (PTOXDPPV), was synthesized by the Heck coupling reaction. The electron transporting unit, conjugated 1,3,4-oxadiazo1e (OXD), is attached on the main chain via linear 1,6-hexamethylenedioxy chain. The band gap and photoluminescence (PL) maximum of PTOXDPPV are 2.35 eV and 565 nm, respectively. These values are very close to those of po1y[(2,5-didecyloxy-1,4-phenylene-1,2-etheny1ene )-alt-(l0-hexyl-3,7-phenothiazine)-1,2-ethenylene] (PTPPV), which does not have OXD pendant. The estimated HOMO energy level of PTOXDPPV was -4.98 eV, which is very close to that of PTPPV (-4.91 eV). The maximum wavelength of EL device based on PTOXDPPV and PTPPV appeared at 587 and 577 nm, respectively. In the PL and EL spectrum, the emission from OXD pendant was not observed. This indicates that the energy transfer from OXD pendants to main chain is occurred completely. The EL device based on PTOXD-PPV (ITO/PEDOT/PTOXDPPV/AI) has an efficiency of 0.033 cd/A, which is significantly higher than the device based on PTPPV (ITO/PEDOT/PTPPV/AI) ($4.28{\times}10^{-3}\;cd/A$). From the results, we confirm that the OXD pendants in PTOXDPPV facilitate hole-electron recombination processes in the emissive layer effectively.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown on the TiN-coated silicon substrate with different thickness of Ni and Co catalysts layer at $600^{\circ}C$ using inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD). The Ni and Co catalysts were formed using the RF magnetron sputtering system with various deposition times. It was found that the growth of CNTs was strongly influenced by the surface morphology of Ni and Co catalysts. With increasing deposition time, the thickness of catalysts increased and the grain boundary size of catalysts increased. The surface morphology of catalysts and CNTs were elucidated by SEM. The Raman spectrum further confirmed the graphitic structure of the CNTs. The turn-on field of CNTs grown on Ni and Co catalysts was about 2.7V/pm and 1.9V/pm respectively. Field emission current density of CNTs grown on Ni and Co catalysts was measured as $11.67mA/cm^2$ at $5.5V/{\mu}m$ and $1.5mA/cm^2$ at $5.5V/{\mu}m$ respectively.

  • 2,7-bis(3',6'-diphenyl-[1,1':2',1"-terphenyl]-4'-yl)-9,9'-spirobi[fluorene] (BTPSF) and 2,7-bis(1,4-diphenyltriphenylen-2-yl)-9,9'-spirobi[fluorene] (BDTSF) were successfully synthesized as novel blue-emission materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on the spirobifluorene (SBF) moiety. BTPSF and BDTSF were obtained in high purity via a Diels-Alder reaction, without the use of a catalyst. Photoluminescence spectra of the synthesized materials showed maximum emitting wave-lengths of approximately 381 and 407 nm in solution and 395 and 434 nm in the film state, for BTPSF and BDTSF, respectively, indicating ultra-violet and deep blue emission colors. BDTSF was applied as an emissive layer (EML) in non-doped devices and achieved a current efficiency of 0.61 cd/A and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.46%.

  • A thermally cross-linkable polymer, poly[(2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene)-alt-(1,4-phenylenevinylene)] (Cross-PPV), was synthesized by the Heck coupling reaction. In order for the polymer to be cross-linkable, 20 mol% excess divinylbenzene was added. The chemical structure of Cross-PPV and thermally crosslinked Cross-PPV were confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. From the FT-IR, UV-Vis, and PL spectral data, thermally crosslinked Cross-PPV was insoluble in common organic solvents. The HOMO and LUMO energy level of thermally cross-linked Cross-PPV were estimated -5.11 and -2.56 eV, respectively, which were determined by the cyclic voltammetry and UV-Vis spectroscopy. From the energy level data, one can easily notice that thermally crosslinked Cross-PPV can be used for hole injection layer effectively. Bilayer structured device (ITO/crosslinked Cross-PPV/PM-PPV/Al) was fabricated using poly(1,4-phenylenevinylene-(4-dicyanomethylene-4H-pyran)-2,6-vinylene-1,4-phenylenevinylene-2,5-bis(dodecyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene (PM-PPV) as the emitting layer, which have HOMO and LUMO energy levels of -5.44 eV and -3.48 eV, respectively. The bilayered device had much enhanced the maximum efficiency (0.024 cd/A) and luminescence ($45cd/m^2$) than those of a single layer device (ITO/PM-PPV/Al, 0.003 cd/A, $3cd/m^2$). The enhanced performance originated from that fact that cross-linked Cross-PPV facilitatse the hole injection to the emissive layer and the injected hole and electron from ITO and Al are recombined in emitting layer (PM-PPV) effectively.

  • New devices with the structure of ITO/2-TNATA/NPB/TCTA/CBP:$7%Ir(ppy)_3$/BCP/SFC-137/LiF/Al were designed and fabricated to develop high efficiency green phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes and their electroluminescence properties were evaluated. Among the devices with different thicknesses of CBP in a range of $150{\AA}{\sim}350{\AA}$, the best luminance was obtained in the device with $300{\AA}$-thick CBP host. Nearly saturated current efficiencies indicates that the maximum efficiency value can be obtained with CBP thicknesses of $300{\AA}{\sim}350{\AA}$. The current density, luminance, and current efficiency of the PhOLED(phosphorescent organic light emitting diode) with $CBP(300{\AA}):7%Ir(ppy)_3-emissive$ layer at an applied voltage of 10V were $40mA/cm^2,\;10000cd/m^2$, and 25 cd/A, respectively. The maximum current efficiency was 40.5cd/A under the luminance of $160cd/m^2$. The peak wavelength and FWHM(full width at half maximum) in the electroluminescence spectral were 512nm and 60nm, respectively. The color coordinate was (0.28, 0.63) on the CIE (Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage) chart.
