  • The emission characteristics of odorous compounds discharged from the major environmental treatment facilities in Chungju were closely investigated by an ammonia passive sampler and by analyzing a questionnaire of the public complains. Amongst the four major emission sources, the manure treatment facility showed the highest concentration. The major components were sulfur compounds including H$_2$S, tri-methyl amine, and aldehydes. The foodwaste treatment processes releases sulfur compounds and aldehydes. Municipal waste water treatment facility emits a high concentration of acetaldehyde. It was found that the perceived odor level depends on the meteorological condition, and the odor intensity was higher at midnight than daytime.

  • It is known that the diffuse H${\alpha}$ halos around bright H II regions are more extended than the dust-scattered halos around point sources and the line ratios [S II] ${\lambda}$6716/H${\alpha}$ and [N II] ${\lambda}$6583/H${\alpha}$ observed outside of bright H II regions are generally higher than those in H II regions. These observational facts have been regarded as evidence against the dust-scattering origin of the diffuse H${\alpha}$ emission and the effect of dust-scattering has been neglected in studying the diffuse H${\alpha}$ emission. In this paper, we find, however, that dust-scattered halos of H II regions should be more extended than those of point sources and is in good agreement with the observed H${\alpha}$ profiles around H II regions. We also found that the observed line ratios [S II]/H${\alpha}$, [N II]/H${\alpha}$, and He I ${\lambda}$5876/H${\alpha}$ in the diffuse regions can be well reproduced with the dust-scattered halos around H II regions which are photoionized by late O- and/or early B-type stars in the interstellar medium with the abundances close to those of the warm neutral medium. Therefore, we conclude that the diffuse H${\alpha}$ emission may originate mostly from the dust-scattering.

  • Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode. • Recently in Korea, due to the significant drop of lead and bromine levels as a marker of autoemission source in the urban areas, the conventional application of receptor methods has many difficulties to properly apportion mass contribution of some sources. It is then needed to urgently develop alternative source profiles and identify new emission markers. Thus, the study has extensively examined the results obtained from using PAHs and elemental data for receptor modeling and has provided an opportunity to identify alternative source compositions and to determine a proper number of the ambient emission sources in Seoul area. The purpose of the study is to identify the sources of PM-10 and to estimate their mass contributions in Seoul area. Thus, a receptor model, target transformation factor analysis(TTFA) has been massively applied. The TTFA offers the possibility of determining the number of sources and their mass contributions. The input data used in this study are composed of two separate sets: fine (d$_{p}$ < 2.5.mu.m) and coarse (2.5.mu.m < d$_{p}$ < 10.mu.m) mode aerosol samples. Each sample was simultaneously collected by a PM-10 dichotomous sampler during the daytime(8 AM to 8 PM) and the nighttime(8 PM to 8 AM) from February to October 1993 on the Sungdong-Gu, Seoul. All the samples were analyzed to determine the levels of 10 inorganic elements by an XRF system as well as 14 PAHs by a HPLC. However, only 8 inorganic elements and 7 PAHs were used for the various statistical analysis.sis.

  • The air pollutant emission is mainly caused by line sources in urban area. For example, the annually totaled air pollutant emission is known to consist of about 80% of line sources in Daegu. Hence, the appropriate assessment on the air pollutants of line sources is very important for the atmospheric environmental management in urban area. In this study, we made a comparative study to evaluate suitable dispersion model for estimating the air pollution from line sources. Two air pollution dispersion models, ISCST3 and CALINE4 were the subject of this study. The results were as follows; In the assessment of air pollution model, ISCST3 was found to have 4 times higher concentration than CALINE4. In addition, actual data obtained by measurement and estimated values by CALINE4 were generally identical. The air pollution assessment based on ISC3 model produced significantly lower values than actual data. The air pollution levels estimated by ISCST3 were very low in comparison with the observational values.

  • We have searched for HI 21 cm line emission from shocked atomic gas associated with southern supernova remnants (SNRs) using data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. Among the 97 sources studied, we have detected 10 SNRs with high-velocity HI emission confined to the SNR. The large velocity and the spatial confinement suggest that the emission is likely from the gas accelerated by the SN blast wave. We also detected 22 SNRs which show HI emission significantly brighter than the surrounding regions over a wide ($>10 km\;s^{-1}$) velocity interval. The association with these SNRs is less certain. We present the parameters and maps of the excess emission in these SNRs. We discuss in some detail the ten individual SNRs with associated high-velocity HI emission.

  • Circularly polarized (CP) emission can be achieved by integrating emissive materials into chiral metasurfaces. Such CP light sources in integrated device platforms are desirable for important potential applications. However, the exact characterization of the polarization state in CP emission may include some errors because of the unwanted polarization distortion caused by optical components (e.g., beam splitter) in the optical setup. Here, we consider CP emission measurements from chiral metasurfaces and characterize the polarization distortion caused by the beam splitter. We first detail the procedures for the Stokes parameters and Mueller matrix measurements. Then, we directly measure the Mueller matrix of the beam splitter and retrieve the original polarization state of CP emission from our metasurface sample. Using the measured Mueller matrix of the beam splitter, we specifically identify what contributes to polarization distortion in CP emission. Our work may provide useful guidelines for the characterization and compensation of polarization distortion in general Stokes parameter measurements.

  • We have decomposed the 11-cm radio continuum emission of the W51 complex into thermal and non-thermal components. The distribution of the thermal emission has been determined by analyzing HI, CO, and IRAS $60-{\mu}m$ data. We have found a good correlation between the 11-cm thermal continuum and the 60- 11m emissions, which is used to obtain the thermal and non-thermal 11-cm continuum maps of the W51 complex. Most of the thermal continuum is emanating from the compact H II regions and their low-density ionized envelopes in W51A and W51B. All the H II regions, except G49.1-0.4 in W51B, have associated molecular clumps. The thermal radio continuum fluxes of the compact H II regions are proportional to the CO fluxes of molecular clumps. This is consistent with the previous results that the total mass of stars in an H II region is proportional to the mass of the associated molecular clump. According to our result, there are three non-thermal continuum sources in W51: G49.4-0.4 in W51A, a weak source close to G49.2-0.3 in W51B, and the shell source W51C. The non-thermal flux of G49.5-0.4 at 11-cm is $\~28 Jy$, which is $\~25\%$ of its total 11-cm flux. The radio continuum spectrum between 0.15 and 300 GHz also suggests an excess emission over thermal free-free emission. We show that the excess emission can be described as a non-thermal emission with a spectral index ${\alpha}{\simeq}-1.0 (S_v{\propto}V^a)$ attenuated by thermal free-free absorptions at low-frequencies. The non-thermal source close to G49.2-0.3 is weak $(\~9 Jy)$. The nature of the source is not known and the reality of the non-thermal emission needs to be confirmed. The non~thermal shell source W51C has a 11-cm flux of $\~130Jy$ and a spectral index ${\alpha}{\simeq}-0.26$.

  • Thermo-acoustic emission (AE) from composite laminates under the repetitive thermal cyclic loads have been quantitatively analyzed in consideration of AE source mechanisms. The repetitive thermal load brought about a large reduction, i.e. an exponential decrease in AE total ringdown counts and AE amplitudes. It was thought that generation of thermo-AE during the first thermal cycle was not caused by crack propagation but by secondary microfracturing due to abrasive contact between crack surfaces.

  • Using the CAPSS emissions data, we analysed changes and reasons in the annual air pollutant emission trends from 1999 to 2014. The CO emissions in the metropolitan area decreased steadily since 2001, when the latest model year of automobiles and high efficiency fuel were applied. However, other regions have not changed significantly in annual emissions. $NO_x$ emissions continued to increase since 2003, and unchanged after the decline in 2007. $SO_x$ emissions are steadily declining due to the supply of low sulfur oil. The $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ emissions were repeatedly affected by the influence of motor vehicles activities in the metropolitan area. In Gangwon and Chungcheong Provinces, emissions are increasing according to the use of coal in the manufacturing sector. And VOC and $NH_3$ emissions are increasing steadily every year. The major CO emission sources was automobiles in the metropolitan area. However, agricultural residue burning was the biggest CO sources in the Chungchong, Honam and Yeongnam Provinces. The major sources of $NO_x$ emissions differ from region to region. In the Metropolitan area, Honam and Yeongnam region, the truck was the largest emitter of $NO_x$. However, the cement kiln was the largest producer of $NO_x$ in Gangwon region, and the power plant is the largest emitter in Chungcheong Provinces.
