  • The NOx emission characteristics of double-concentric diffusion flames and normal diffusion flames fueled with CH$_4$ were studied. Experimental and numerical investigations were carried out for double-concentric diffusion flame with varying central air flow rate and normal diffusion flame. The Emission indices of NOx(EINOx) were measured by chemiluminescent method and calculated by numerical model based on detailed chemistry. From the comparison between double-concentric diffusion flames and normal diffusion flames, the results show that EINOx of double-concentric diffusion flames are lower than normal diffusion flame, because of Prompt EINOx was decreased. EINOx of double-concentric diffusion flames increase with central air flow rate increasing.

  • Coal-burning utilities are facing a major NOx control compliance challenge due to the heavy emission regulation. In response to this challenge, some applicative technologies to effectively reduce NOx are developed and applied in the pulverized coal power plants. One of these is low NOx burner(LNB) equipped with multi-staged air register. In this study, NOx emission rate and flame shapes are investigated with secondary and tertiary air flow conditions in air staged coal burner, and the optimal windows of flow conditions to minimize NOx emission rate are found out. The test conditions treated in this study are the flow rate, swirl direction and intensity and throat injection velocity of secondary and tertiary air.

  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is used to reduce NOx emission, to improve fuel economy, and to suppress knock since it offers the benefits of the inlet charge dilution. The effects of EGR was investigated on the performance and emission to reduce exhaust thermal load with a single cylinder liquid-phase LPG injection engine, in a wide range of EGR rate, engine conditions and LPG proportions. As EGR rate was increased, NOx was reduced while HC was increased. Pumping loss reduction by EGR improved bsfc and increased EGR lowered exhaust gas temperature. And, LPG proportions were made a difference on the performance and emission characteristics.

  • A study on the Correlation of Orthogonal Cutting Parameter (Cutting speed, Depth of cut, Feed Rate) and Acoustic Emission Signal. It is well known that acoustic emission (AE) is the emission of elastic wave resulting from the deformation and fracture of materials. This study estabished correlation of orthogonal cutting parameter and AE signal, and researched into in-process monitoring of tool wear and failure. The results are as follow; 1. AE RMS was under the influence of cutting speed but hardly influenced by depth of cut and feed rate. 2. AE RMS was under the influence of flank wear. 3. AE count rate increased by increased cutting speed. 4. AE RMS value was rapidly increased in 130 m flank wear.

  • The effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of exhaust emissions and specific fuel consumption have been investigated using an eight-cylinder, four cycle, direct injection diesel engine operating at several loads and speeds. The experiments in this study are conducted on the fixed fuel injection timing of $38^{\circ}$ BTDC regardless of experimental conditions. In conclusion, it is found that $NO_{x}$ emission is markedly reduced with the drop of burnt gas temperature at high speeds and loads especially as the EGR rate increases, while the soot particulate rises with EGR rate and load at a given engine speed, especially high loads. The reduction of exhaust emissions within the Korea heavy duty diesel engine emission standards can be roughly achieved by the optimal EGR rate without degarding the specific fuel consumption, based on the correlations between exhaust emissions.

  • In 1995 Kimchi refrigerator was developed at first, and has used HFC-134a as refrigerant. Kimchi refrigerator has been made 1,044,694 on the basis of 2010, disposed about 160,000 per year. Although mobile air conditioning, commercial refrigerator, general refrigerator is regarded as a major source of HFC-134a, little information is available for its emission characteristics of HFC-134a. This paper addresses the fugitive emission factors of Kimchi refrigerator at use-phase and disposal-phase. The residual quantities of Korean-made fifty three waste Kimchi refrigerators were weighed using a commercial recover of refrigerants to determine the emission factors at the disposal-phase. On the other hand, the emission factors at use-phase were estimated from the residual quantities and operating times. The average residual rate of forty three scarp Kimchi refrigerators is determined to be $74.6{\pm}5.2%$. The emission factor at the use-phase is estimated to be $3.5{\pm}0.8%/yr$ as a result of using average age of 11.7 years and the average residual rate determined here. The emission factor at the disposal-phase is determined to be 31.3% after adopting 58% of the recycling rate of refrigerant reported by Recycling Center. We estimate 3.1 g/yr for the average emission quantity of HFC-134a per operating refrigerator, while 22.5 g for that per waste Kimchi refrigerator. Since the chemical compositions of refrigerant of waste Kimchi refrigerator were the same as those of new refrigerant, it is expected that the HFC-134a recovered from waste Kimchi refrigerator can be reused for refrigerant.

  • The effect of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of exhaust gas emissions, and SFC are experimentally investigated by four-cylinder, four-cycle and direct injection marine diesel engine. In order to reduce the soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to intake system of the engines, a soot removal system of a cylinderical-type scrubber is specially designed and manufactured for the experimental system. (1) SFC is increased in downward convex curve style with increasing excess air ratio, it is increased with increasing EGR rate at the same excess air ratio. (2) NOx emission is reduced in downward convex curve style with increasing excess air ratio, it is reduced with increasing EGR rate at the same excess air ratio. (3) Soot emission is decreased in downward convex curve style with increasing excess air ratio, it is reduced with increasing EGR rate at the same excess air ratio. (4) CO emission is increased in nearly straight line style with increasing excess air ratio, it is increased with increasing EGR rate at the same excess air ratio. (5) HC emission is not constant tendency with increasing excess air ratio, it is increased with increasing EGR rate at the same excess air ratio.

  • This study was carried out to estimate the BVOCs emissions with the emission factors which reflected the native conditions of forests in Jeju Island. This study made effective use of the previous data for the weather data and the emission rate of each organic volatile component measured at 10 species of conifers and broad leaved trees. The CORINAIR method and the grid system of $1km{\times}1km$ for whole area of Jeju Island were adopted in calculating the BVOCs emission emitted from forest. The vegetation information for Jeju Island was referred to GIS and a government report. By the results of BVOCs emission for Jeju Island, the 85% of monoterpene emission was emitted from conifers and the others was from broad leaved trees. Most of monoterpene emission was attributed to Pinus thunbergii and Cryptomeria japonica. The broad leaved trees greatly contributed to the isoprene emission and Quercus serrata played a dominant role in emission of isoprene. The total amount of BVOCs emission was estimated as $3612ton\;yr^{-1}$ in Jeju Island. The 51.1% of total emission was contributed to conifers, the 44.9% to broad leaved trees, and the 4.0% to grassland. Of total emission of BVOCs, monoterpene accounted for 32.3%, isoprene for 28.0%, and OVOCs for 39.7%. The BVOCs emission estimated by this study was less than that estimated by other previous study. This means that it is important to survey the emission rate at native conditions and gather the detailed information for various species of vegetation on target region.

  • Acoustic emission technique is applied to the fatigue crack initiation in a carburized gear tooth. Acoustic emission test performed on carburized gear and three-point bending test equal to carburized gear hardness. The marked acoustic emission are detected at the early stage of crack initiation measured by a crack gauge and the final stage just before the tooth failure. The estimated acoustic emission energy rate are characteristic of the measured acoustic emission.

  • New empirical relations between stellar CaII emission and rotation or age are derived by analyzing Wilson's CaII flux measurements (1968, 1978) of lower main sequence stars, and then we correlate them with their age and rotation rate. It is found that stellar chromospheric emission decays smoothly with age as a star slows down rotationally, establishing that both the emission level and rotation rate decrease with the square root of age.
