하수관거에 퇴적된 유기물에 의한 악취 발생과 산화전리시스템을 이용한 악취 저감 (Odor Emission from Sediments in Sewer Systems and Odor Removal using an Electrolytic Oxidation Process)

  • Odor emission from domestic sewer systems has become a serious environmental problem. An investigation on a sewer manhole revealed that anaerobic decay of sediment organic matters (SOMs) and related declines of oxidation reduction potential (ORP) in the sediment layer were the main reason of the production of volatile sulfur compounds. In addition, as the anaerobic decaying period continued, the odor intensity rapidly increased with increasing concentrations of $H_2S$ and dimethyl sulfide. As a feasible method to control SOMs and to minimize odor emission potentials, an electrolytic oxidation process has been employed to the sediment sludge phase. In this study, voltages applied to the electrolytic oxidation process were varied as a main system parameter, and its effects on odor removal efficiencies and reaction characteristics were investigated. At the applied voltages greater than 20 V, the system efficiently oxidized the organic matter, and the ORP in the sludge phase increased rapidly. As a consequence, the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulfide was found to be >99% within 60 minutes of the electrolytic oxidation. Overall, the electrolytic oxidation process can be an alternative to control odor emission from sewer systems, and a threshold input energy needs to be determined to achieve effective operation of the process.

전력설비에서의 SF6 저감기술 동향 및 특성 분석 (Trends and Characteristics in SF6 Emission Reduction Technology of Electrical Equipment)

  • $SF_6$ 가스는 $CO_2$에 비해 배출량은 적지만 GWP는 $CO_2$ 가스의 22,800배1)로 높으며, 최근 $non-CO_2$에 의한 온실가스 규제가 강화됨으로에 따라 온실가스 감축을 고려한 친환경 $SF_6$ 처리 기술 개발이 대두되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 전력설비 내에서 절연체로 사용되는 $SF_6$ 가스의 배출양상에 따른 배출 특성을 분석하고, 그에 따른 $SF_6$ 가스 저감기술을 살펴보았다. 주요 기술로는 사용 중의 유지보수와 폐기단계에 적용될 수 있는 가스의 회수율($85{\rightarrow}99%$)을 재고시키는 기술과 $SF_6$ 가스 제거를 위한 촉매 제조에 관한 기술 및 차단기 내부 점검 시 별도 $SF_6$ 가스 회수 없이 충전된 상태에서 내시경으로 차단기 내부를 점검하여 $SF_6$ 가스를 저감하는 기술이 있으며, 이러한 기술을 통해 대기 중 $SF_6$ 가스 저감이 이루어질 것으로 판단된다.

  • 전력설비의 $SF_6$ 가스 배출저감을 통한 CDM 방법론 AM0035(Approved Methodology 0035. Ver 1.0)를 적용한 사업은 EB(Executive Board) 41차 회의 결과에 따라 $SF_6$ 가스의 운영 상태 및 과정, 불확도를 포함한 베이스 라인, 프로젝트 배출량 산정에 주요 매개변수의 직접 모니터링을 명확하게 입증해야 한다. 본 연구를 통하여 유지보수 시 회수율, 폐기 교체 전 후 가스 순도, 재처리(reclamation) 전 후 $SF_6$ 가스 손실률, 회수 설비 및 재처리 설비의 전력사용량에 의한 배출량, 운반 시 발생되는 누출량(leakage)의 다양한 모니터링 결과를 보수적으로 고려하였다. 그 결과, 기존 방법론보다 베이스 라인 배출량이 감소하고, 프로젝트 배출량이 증가되어 저감량이 감소하는 것을 확인하였다.

폐기물소각시설의 유해대기오염물질 배출특성 연구 (Characteristics of Hazardous Air Pollutant Emissions from Waste Incinerators)

  • In this study, we have investigated waste incinerators which are one of the major HAPs emission sources. In order to obtain more reliable HAPs emission data from waste incinerators, direct sampling for the possible pollutants from the stack was carried out and the analysis was performed. The purpose of study was to understand the emission status from waste incinerators and recognize the problems and finally to set up a strategy to reduce the HAPs emissions from waste incinerators. The emission concentrations of 8 species of heavy metals and 16 species of PAHs have been analyzed for the first time in Korea. Not only the emission characteristics of HAPs from waste incinerators were identified, but also the analysis of reduction efficiencies for control devices such as BF and wet scrubbing systems was carried out.

산업연관표(2003년)를 활용한 산업별 CO2 배출 원단위 분석 (Analysis of CO2 Emission Intensity per Industry using the Input-Output Tables 2003)

  • 산업에서 발생되는 온실가스를 줄이기 위해서는 각 산업별 온실가스 발생량을 정확히 예측해야 한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 2003년 산업연관표와 에너지 사용량 통계자료를 기초로 401개 산업별 직 간접 $CO_2$ 원단위를 산출하고 이를 활용하는 방안을 검토하였다. 본 연구는 국내에 없는 일부 데이터 대신 해외 데이터 사용, 석유정제부문에 대한 분배 문제, 카본뉴트럴 측면에서 재검토 필요성, 폐기물처리 부문 과정의 일부 미고려 등에 따른 결과의 한계를 가지고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 부산물로 얻어지는 코크스로가스나 철강계 가스, 자원순환 관점에서 주목받고 있는 폐기물 영향까지를 고려한 401개 상세 산업별 직 간접 $CO_2$ 원단위를 산출했다는 측면에서 의미가 있다. 산업별 $CO_2$ 배출 원단위 분석 결과를 살펴보면, 간접 $CO_2$ 원단위가 크게 나타난 대표적인 산업으로는 조강, 레미콘, 선재 및 궤조, 주철물, 철근 및 봉강 산업이다. 이들 산업은 직접 $CO_2$ 원단위가 큰 산업에서 생산된 원료물질을 이용하여 제품을 생산하고 있다. 직접 $CO_2$ 배출 원단위가 크게 나타난 대표적인 산업으로는 시멘트, 선철, 석회 및 석고 제품, 석탄화합물 등 자연으로부터 채취한 원광석 등을 이용하여 다른 산업에 유용한 원료물질로 정제하는 산업이었다. 본 연구 결과는 산업별 특성이 반영된 저감 목표치 산정, $CO_2$ 저감정책별 감축 잠재량 산정, 기업의 $CO_2$ 배출량 수준 파악 및 저감 목표량을 설정할 때 유용하게 활용될 수 있다. 그 밖에도 국내에서 활발히 연구되고 있는 환경경제통합계정, 산업별 물질흐름분석 분야에서 널리 응용될 수 있을 것이다.

국내 철도부문의 활동도 자료에 따른 온실가스 배출량 비교 연구 (Comparison of GHG Emission with Activity Data in Korean Railroad Sector)

  • Since national GHG reduction target by 2020 has been presented in Korea, the role of railroad has been reinforced within transport system due to the allocation of reduction target into sector. So, it is necessary to manage activity data systematically for the calculation of GHG emission in railroad. Now, the activity data of diesel consumption for NIR(National Inventory Report) are provided from oil supply and demand statistics. On the other hands, the activity data collected directly from railroad operating companies are used for GHG & Energy Target Management Act. This study aimed to assess the GHG emissions using two kinds of activity data related to the diesel consumption of railroad in 2009 and 2010. As a result, GHG emissions based on oil supply and demand statistics was 636 thousands ton $CO_{2e}$, but the activity data collected from railroad operating companies showed 649 thousands ton $CO_{2e}$ in 2009. Also, the gap of $CO_{2e}$ emission was increased in 2010. These trends were caused because oil supply and demand statistics included total diesel sales volume during 1 year and the activity data collected from railroad operating companies were the amount of diesel consumption only at railcar operation and maintenance step. In conclusion, it is important to develop the management and verification system of activity data with high reliability to substitute oil supply and demand statistics in railroad sector.

산성비 원인물질인 이산화황 저감모형 구축과 평가에 관한 연구: Global 2100 모형을 중심으로 (Development and Evaluation on a Model for Reducing SO2: Case Study on Global 2100 Model)

  • Acid rain below pH 5.6 is responsible for 40% of annual precipitation in Korea and it is more serious especially in major cites. Because of that, it is urgent to make measures to reduce the emission of $SO_2$, one of the major air pollutants causing acid rain. The national total emission of $SO_2$ in 1994 was estimated as 1.6 million tons. The $SO_2$ emission in 2020, is expected to increase up to 3.2 million tons, about 2 times that of 1994 under Business-As-Usual scenario. We could take various $SO_2$ reduction measures such as installing desulfurization facilities, the supply of low-sulfur oil and clean fuel(LNG), energy savings, upgrading of production process. However, it is necessary to check the economic feasibility and the attainability to reduction target with a dynamic optimization mode, "Global 2100 Model". The cost-benefit analyses for the measures using the revised "Global 2100 Model" clearly revealed that the desulfurization facilities should be introduced to reduce the $SO_2$ concentration to 0.01 ppm with fuel substitution. If the introduction of desulfurization facilities is delayed, We can not attain the goal of Ministry of Environment before the year of 2012, even in the case that almost all the fuels would be substituted with LNG.

  • South Korea's power consumption is increasing every year. For stable electric power supply, more generation facilities are needed. But it is not easy to build nuclear power generation facilities, so provision of renewable energy is thought of as the solution. For the system's stable management, practical use of energy storing system is needed. Currently, pumping up electric power station is considered most useful. In this study, we have calculated the least amount of energy storing device by considering the renewable energy, HVDC, and change in power for the appliance of ESS in Jeju system, according to The 6th Basic Plan for Long-term Electricity Supply and Demand. Also we have calculated the amount of the battery and about the load equalizing effect to use battery as power storing device. Finally, we have calculated the reduction of electricity generation and the reduction of $CO_2$ emission with this study.

현대 FFV(Flexible Fuel Vehicle) 개발 (Research and development of Hyundai FFVs(flexible fuel vehicles))

  • This paper describes Hyundai's research and development work on a flexible fuel vehicle (FFV). The work on FFV has been conducted to evaluate its potential as an alternative to the conventional gasoline vehicle. Hyundai FFV described here can be operated on M85, gasoline, or any of their combinations, in which the methanol concentration is measured by an electrostatic type fuel sensor. For that operation, a special FFV ECU(Eletronic Control Unit) has been developed and incorporated in the FFV. The characteristics affecting FFV operation, such as FFV ECU control strategy and injector flow rate, have been investigated and optimized through the experiment. And various development tests have been performed in view of engine performance, durability, cold startability, and exhaust emissions reduction. The exhaust gas aftertreatment system consisting of manifold type catalyst and secondary air injection system shows good emission reduction performance including formaldehyde, and finally, the possibility of the FFVs as the low emission vehicles is evaluated by presenting NMOG(Non-Methane Organic Gases) levels with respect to M0 and M85. With these results, it is concluded that FFV can be a candidate for the low emission vehicles, but more works on its durability improvement is required.

Performance and emission characteristics of biodiesel blends in a premixed compression ignition engine with exhaust gas recirculation

  • This paper is based on experiments conducted on a stationary, four stroke, naturally aspirated air cooled, single cylinder compression ignition engine coupled with an electrical swinging field dynamometer. Instead of 100% diesel, 20% Jatropha oil methyl ester with 80% diesel blend was injected directly in engine beside 25% pre-mixed charge of diesel in mixing chamber and with 20% exhaust gas recirculation. The performance and emission characteristics are compared with conventional 100% diesel injection in main chamber. The blend with diesel premixed charge with and without exhaust gas recirculation yields in reduction of oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter. Adverse effects are reduction of brake thermal efficiency, increase of unburnt hydrocarbons (UBHC), carbon monoxide (CO) and specific energy consumption. UBHC and CO emissions are higher with Diesel Premixed Combustion Ignition (DPMCI) mode compared to compression ignition direct injection (CIDI) mode. Percentage increases in UBHC and CO emissions are 27% and 23.86%, respectively compared to CIDI mode. Oxides of nitrogen ($NO_x$) and soot emissions are lower and the percentage decrease with DPMCI mode are 32% and 33.73%, respectively compared to CIDI mode.
