  • To deal with the emergency of the solitary aged people, we have developed a collapse-sensing phone, in which a collapse sensor, a GPS receiving chipset and a CDMA sending chipset are included. The general cellular phone is somewhat expensive communication device using sound and characters, but the collapse-sensing phone is a cheaper and popular version. If the collapse sensor recognizes a certain of collapse of the aged people, CDMA sending chipset will send the location of the phone which is received from satellite by GPS receiving chipset. In this paper, a collapse recognition algorithm which is developed by using much experimental data, will be introduced to explain how to recognize the real collapse from fast sitting or immediate standing after collapse. Once a true collapse is ecognized, the phone-ID and the coordinate will be sent to the server of administrative office via CDMA network. And the position of emergency will be displayed on the GIS with the rescue center.

  • In this paper, we propose a design of the implementation for a search and rescue system for mountain climbers and evaluate the performance of the system. Search and rescues of people in emergency situations in mountain areas have been difficult due to lack of information about their location. In the proposed design, several small and commonly-available RF-based sensors, some amount of storage and processing devices are used. Infestations offer geographically intermittent coverage at high speeds. The proposed mountain climber tracking system use the directed diffusion scheme combined with infostation system. We also analyze the performance of the proposed system with NS-2 simulation package. From the performance analysis results, we expect that the proposed system will be very useful to early detect climbers' locations in emergency situations in Korea mountain areas.

  • Firefighters are exposed to extreme stress and risk owing to the nature of their work. This can lead to psychological burnout, and work overload can result in lethargy and depression. This study aims to analyze the mediating effect of depression on the impact of heavy workloads on psychological exhaustion among firefighters. We conducted a survey among firefighters in various regions of Korea to analyze the levels of work overload, depression, and psychological burnout. The analysis yielded the following results. First, work overload, depression, and psychological exhaustion showed positive correlations. Second, the mediating effect of depression on the relationship between work overload and psychological exhaustion was verified. This study confirms the necessity of the systematic management of psychological exhaustion by addressing the mediating role of depression in the context of heavy workloads. This study is expected to serve as foundational data for policy measures aimed at reducing the burden on firefighters, and maintaining their mental health.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to clarify the role of alcohol use disorders and acute alcohol consumption in suicide attempts by gender. Methods : Data of 1,152 suicide attempters(487 males and 742 females) who had visited an emergency center was gathered. Suicide attempts were categorized into three groups according to alcohol use: an alcohol use disorder group(AUD), an acute alcohol use group(AAU), and a no-alcohol use group(NAU). The intent and lethality of suicide attempts were evaluated by Suicidal Intents Scale and Risk-Rescue Rating Scale. Results : For Suicidal Intents Scale score, the male AUD group revealed a significantly lower mean score than the male AAU one. However, there were no statistically significant differences for female subjects across subgroups. With regard to the Risk-Rescue Rating Scale score, there were no significant differences for males, while the AUD group showed both the lowest highest rescue scores and lowest risk-rescue scores within female groups. Conclusions : AUD in females was more likely regarding impulsive suicide attempts with high rescue chances. Consuming alcohol might have different effect on suicide attempts by gender and our study shows that alcohol use is an important risk factor according to gender, particularly with regard to female suicide attempts.
