The experiment was implemented to gain basic data for stable proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) production through germination viability and establishment uniformity based on seed refining under seed selection with specific gravity of proso millet seed. Seeds of three proso millet cultivars were carefully selected by adjusting NaCl into 9 levels (1.000, 1.005, 1.010, 1.015, 1.020, 1.025, 1.030, 1.035, 1.04 g·L-1), and their standard germination rate, seeding quality and field emergence rate were investigated. Proso millets showed heavier thousand seed weight as specific gravity high. In standard germination, all of the 3 cultivars of selected seeding showed at least 91% germination rate. With respect to the 1.040 g·L-1 selection by specific gravity, 'Hwanggeum' had 98.9%, 'Ibaekchal', 99.4%, and 'Hwangsilchal', 98.9%, recording the highest. Seeding quality was investigated and it was found that, compared with the non-selected seeds, selected seeds had longer plant heights and averaged 2.0, 2.2 and 1.9 cm, respectably. In terms of leaf length, only 'Hwanggeum' and 'Ibaekchal' showed distinctive differences. No significance was found in stem diameter and SPAD. The seeds selected using specific gravity all had longer or heavier average root length, root weight and stem weight. Compared with non-selected seeds, the specific gravity of 1.040 g·L-1 had longer root lengths of 2.9, 3.0 and 2.9 cm. 1.040 g·L-1 was also found to have the heaviest root weight, and stem weight. The field emergence viability investigation found significance solely in the mean emergence time (MET) by the cultivar. High significance was found in percent emergence (PE) and emergence rate index (ERI) in the specific gravity for the selection of seeds. All of the three cultivars showed higher PE and ERI as specific gravity selection high. The 1.040 g·L-1 specific gravity selection had the highest PE of 90.7, 85.3 and 92.8%. For productivity increase based on improved proso millet germination rate and enhanced establishment uniformity, it seems favorable to employ 1.040 g·L-1 specific gravity selection using salt solution.
Reasonable seedling emergence is a prerequisite for successful crop cultivation especially in medicinal crops. The study was carried out to model the pretreatment or seed treatment of Codonopsis lanceolata seeds by evaluating the treatment effects of priming, $GA_3$, drying and water imbibition after drying on their germination and then their successive seed treatment on the basis of its seedling emergence. The priming using $Ca(NO_3)_2$ and $GA_3$ treatment under their different concentrations and light quality illuminated for 12 hours a day were separately done and the two best results from priming and $GA_3$ treatments were compared to determine the better one. The drying of imbibed seeds using the above best result and water imbibition of the dried seeds were successively done to measure the rates of germination and emergence. On the greatest germination rate of the first two individual treatments, priming was obtained at $Ca(NO_3)_2$ 150 mM under blue, red light or darkness for 2 days but $GA_3$ was done at 0.1 mM under blue light imposed for 3 days. However, the result of the latter $GA_3$ treatment was better than that of priming. $GA_3$ treated seeds were best desiccated under $35^{\circ}C$ and 4 hour red light illumination. A day water imbibition immediately before sowing increased the germination rate of seeds dried after $GA_3$ treatment. Seedling emergence tested after all 3 successive treatments, $GA_3$, drying and water imbibition before sowing was greater than the two others, only $GA_3$ treatment and the combination of $GA_3$ and drying, meaning that its pretreatment of seeds or seed treatment must follow the successive procedure of the above 3 ones.
Indoor seed treatments to elevate seedling emergence should be of value. The study was done to model the presown treatments of Platycodon grandiflorum seeds by evaluating the treatment effects of priming,$GA_3$, drying and water imbibition after drying on their germination and then their successive seed treatments on the basis of its seedling emergence. after priming using $Ca(NO_3)_2\;and\;GA_3$ treatment under their different concentrations and light quality illuminated for 12 hours a day were done separately and their two best results were compared to determine the better one, drying of imbibed seeds using the above best result and water imbibition of the dried seeds were successively done to check the rates of germination and emergence. In each treatment of priming and $GA_3$, the former best germination occurred at $Ca(NO_3)_2$ 150 mM done under 2 day darkness but the latter one did at 0.01 mM done under 12 hour a day red light forced for 3 days. Of the two best results from priming and $GA_3$ treatments, the latter result was shown higher germination rate. $GA_3$ treated seeds were best desiccated under $35^{\circ}C$ and 4 hour red light illumination. The germination rate of seeds dried after $GA_3$ treatment was enhanced as imibibed 2 days immediately before sowing. Seedling emergence of all 3 successive treatments, $GA_3$, drying and water imbibition before sowing was the greatest than the two others, only $GA_3$ treatment and the combination of $GA_3$ and drying, in which indicated that its presown seed treatment must follow the successive procedure of the above 3 ones.

To obtain the basic informations necessary to develop the production technology of vegetable soybean seeds, this study was conducted at the National Crop Experiment Station, RDA, Suwon, Korea in 1993. Seeds of three vegetable soybean varieties, 'Mikawashima', 'Hwaeomputkong', and 'Seokryangputkong' produced at Pyeongchang, a highland in Korea and introduced from Japan were planted on April 20 in the field. The emergence rate among varieties was significanlty different. Emergence rate of seeds produced at Pyeongchang was higher by 7% than that of the seeds from Japan. Rate of pod infection by Phamapsis spp., brown spot by Septaria glycines, soybean mosaic virus(SMV), and downy mildew by Peronospora manshurica in the field was not different between locations. The growth characteristics, yield components, and green pod and grain yields were not different between locations. Therefore, it was proved that the production of vegetable soybean seeds with the better quality and higher emergence is possible in highland, Korea. possible in highland, Korea.
Soil crusting and hardening as a result of drying after rainfall were examined in relation to seedling emergence by employing five rice varieties (Italiconaverneco, Dadazo, and Galsaekggarakshare, Dongjinbyeo and Sumjinbyeo) and two barnyardgrass species (E. crus-gallj var. oryzjcola and E. crus-galli var. praticola). Sandy loam, loam, and silty loam soils were used. The artificial rainfall of 0, 20 and 40mm were applied after sowing and covering with 4cm soil. Air temperature and solar radiation averaged over 9 days after seeding was 31.3$^{\circ}C$ and 16.9MJ /m$^2$, respectively. Soil strength increased rapidly by drying after artificial rainfall, being greater in soils with greater amount of clay and artificial rainfall. Soil crust was formed on the surface with artificial rainfall in all soils tested. However, soil crust was exfoliated in silty loam and loam soil, and lifted as seedlings emerge. Seedling emergence of rice varieties was decreased by rainfall treatments. Sumjinbyeo and Dongjinbyeo showed much poorer seedling emergence especially in sandy loam soil than the other varieties. Poor seedling emergence of these varieties might have been caused by delayed seedling emergence which had made them expose to greater soil strength. Seedling emergence of barnyardgrasses showed no differences among soil textures and rainfall treatments, because they emerged rapidly before soil crusting and hardening were proceeded enough to hamper seedling emergence. Seedling emergence of Sumjinbyeo and Dongjinbyeo decreased with increasing soil strength averaged over 3 days to 5 days after seeding, being lowered to 80% at soil strength of 1.0kg/cm$^2$ and to 50% at 1.7kg/cm$^2$. Emergence speed of barnyardgrasses was faster than rice varieties, and E. crus-galli var. oryzjcola than E. crus-galli var. praticola. Italiconaverneco and Dadazo showed faster emergence in rice varieties. Galsaekggarakshare showed slower emergence speed than these two varieties with similar seedling emergence percentage. The greater and faster elongations of mesocotyl and incomplete leaf in rice, and of mesocotyl in barnyardgrass were the characteristics responsible for higher seedling emergence rate in the environment examined.
The behavior and circadian rhythm of emergence, copulation and oviposition in the Oriental tobacco budworm (Heliothis assulta Guenee) were studied to obtain the following results. More than three quarters of adults emerged within 3 hours after the light-off. It took about 33 min for an adult to expand and tan its wings after emergence. Adult male showed a sequential pattern of mating behavior, such as antennal movement, wing elevation and vibration, exten¬sion of hairpencils, and tapping of female ovipositor leading to a copulation. However, adult female revealed a rather simple behavior, such as protraction and retraction of her terminal abdomen and vibration of wings. All of the mating took place during the early part of the scotophase, with the peak from 1 hr to 2 hrs after the light-off. But the mating peak in virgin females tended to advance with age. Adult females showed the highest rate of mating among 24 hr-olds and the rate declined with age. The rate of first matings in males gave a very similar pattern to that of females. The duration of copulation was $77\pm$14min. Oviposition occurred throughout the entire scotophase, with the peak during the first 2 hrs. The most nu¬mber of eggs deposited daily was seen on the 3rd day after the mating. Mating rate, number of eggs laid and longevity we~e compared under different sex ratio. Unmated adults lived longer than mated adults.
Seedling emergence of 15 rice varieties (Gayabyeo, Chilseongbyeo, Samgangbyeo, Yeongsanbyeo, Yeongdeugbyeo, Hwajinbyeo, Palgongbyeo, Seomjinbyeo, Tamjinbyeo, Milyang 95, M 101, M 202, Newbonnet, Tebonnet, and Lemont) were tested at different soil moisture regimes and seeding depths. Submergence for four days immediately after seeding did not reduce emergence rate in all varieties. Under the flooded condition, the percentage of emergence of all varieties at 1.5cm seeding depth ranged 0~40%, it is much lower compared to uncovered control, and percentage of seedling survival ranged 0~24% due to death of some emerged seedlings. Under the field condition, one time flooding up to 10cm above the soil surface after seeding did not reduce the percent emergence of seedlings. The pF value of soil was 0 for few days after flooding or raining and Eh of soil ranged 443-453m V.
This experiment was conducted to study whether priming with deep sea water results in enhancement of seed germination and to identify the optimum concentration of the priming solution, and duration of priming using sweet pepper (Cv. California wonder), rice (Cv. Ilpum) and ginseng seed. Sweet pepper and rice seeds were primed with 5 various concentrations (5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30%) for deep sea water for 48 hours, 24 hours and 12 hours at $25^{\circ}C$ and ginseng seeds in 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30%, and 2,4,6, and 8 electrical conductivity (EC) which were made by desalinating deep sea water. Priming in deep sea water (DSW) improved the early and final germination percentage, mean germinal on rate, emergence percentage and root and shoot length, compared with plain water, $KNO_3$ and without priming treatments. In sweet pepper, 24 hours priming with 5 percentage DSW significantly improved the early germination percentage and radical length. It has also improved the mean germination and emergence days and early emergence percentage, compared with $KNO_3$ and control. Whereas, in rice, 48 hours priming with 10 percent DSW significantly improved the early germination percentage, plumule emergence percentage, root length and shoot height. Hence the best seed priming treatment on sweet pepper and Rice are 24 hours with 5 percentage DSW and 48 hours with 10 percentage DSW, respectively, whereas in ginseng, priming with EC4, EC8 and 25% DSW had shown better germination.
