In recent geotechnical engineering, geothermal approach has been on the horizon to deal with geoenvironmental issues, freezing and thawing problems, and seepage phenomenon in dams and embankments. In this study, geothermal characteristic through inner body of dams and its influence on the seepage flow were experimented by lab test and field instrumentation. Also, one of up-to-date temperature monitoring technique, called as multi-channel thermal line sensing, was evaluated its availability. As a result of lab test, it is found that the seepage flow has influence on the geothermal characteristic and a potential of finding phreatic line and seepage fluctuation could be possible by continuous temperature monitoring using thermal line sensing skills. These kine of geothermal information could be available to the modelling of water geo-structure interaction. Out of short-term field tests, clear water table and temperature distribution of a dam were easily found through temperature monitoring in holes located near a reservoir and holes within a depth of constant temperature layer. However, it is also found that the geothermal flow and finding seepage line could not be easily understandable through multi-channel temperature monitoring because of the existence of constant temperature field, thermal conductivity of soils and rocks, and unsaturated characteristics of geo-material. In this case, long-term geothermal monitoring is recommended to find sudden fluctuation of seepage line and amount of leakage.
This study was conducted in order to analyze weather characteristics during the reign of King Sejo in the Chosun Dynasty based on The Annals of the Chosun Dynasty. For this purpose, first of all, we need to determine whether The Annals of the Chosun Dynasty is a reliable material for research on weather characteristics. Thus, we compared weather phenomena during the reign of King Sejo with those in China and Japan in the same period. From the results, it was found that The Annals of the Chosun Dynasty is a useful material at least to grasp macroscopic trends in weather phenomena. Based on this assumption, we analyzed weather characteristics during the reign of King Sejo using data from The Annals of the Chosun Dynasty. During the days of King Sejo, the climate was not changed violently and there were not many disasters caused by abnormal climate such as bad harvests. This suggests that the climate was relatively stable during the period of King Sejo. As a consequence of stable weather, famine decreased markedly. However, this was not only because of stable climate but also because of the government's active efforts to reduce disasters. As droughts and floods were not frequent, social costs for recovery from disasters also decreased considerably and the saved money could be invested in the construction of social safety nets for the prevention of disasters. One of factors supporting the enthronement of King Sejo was a series of heavily damaging bad harvests during the reign of Kings Munjong and Danjong. The prevention of bad harvests was a historical mission given to the regime of King Sejo. During his reign, King Sejo promoted various policies in order to stop bad harvests. Such efforts included the government's active construction of embankments, introduction of seeds suitable for reclaimed lands, and inspiration of the consciousness of forceful farming enduring natural disasters such as floods. As a result, abnormal weathers such as floods and droughts did not lead directly to bad harvests.
Recently, the high speed railway comes into the spotlight as the important and convenient traffic infrastructure. In Korea, Kyung-Bu high speed train service began in about 400km section at 2004, and the Ho-Nam high speed railway will be constructed by 2017. The high speed train will run with a design maximum speed of 300-350km/hr. Since the trains are operated at high speed, the differential settlement of subgrade under the rail is able to cause a fatal disaster. Therefore, the differential settlement of the embankment must be controlled with the greatest care. Furthermore, the characteristics and causes of settlements which occurred under construction and post-construction should be investigated. A considerable number of studies have been conducted on the settlement of the natural ground over the past several decades. But little attention has been given to the compression settlement of the embankment. The long-term settlement of compacted fills embankments is greatly influenced by the post-construction wetting. This is called 'hydro collapse' or 'wetting collapse'. In spite of little study for this wetting collapse problem, it has been recognized that the compressibility of compacted sands, gravels and rockfills exhibit low compressibility at low pressures, but there can be significant compression at high pressures due to grain crushing by several researchers(Marachi et al. 1969, Nobari and Duncan 1972, Noorany et al. 1994, Houston et al. 1993, Wu 2004). The characteristics of compression of fill materials depend on a number of factors such as soil/rock type, as-compacted moisture, density, stress level and wetting condition. Because of the complexity of these factors, it is not easy to predict quantitatively the amount of compression without extensive tests. Therefore, in this research I carried out the wetting collapse tests, with focusing in various soil/rock type, stress levels, wetting condition more closely.
The subject of this paper is research into the application of electrical resistivity monitoring to detecting the water leakage of water utilization facilities. For this purpose, we installed a comprehensive monitoring system consisting of resistivity measurement, inclinometer, piezometer, and water gauge at an embankment. Using this monitoring system, we monitored the various kinds of measurement data and compared the resistivity structures and that of hydrological and engineering data in order to investigate the water leakage and stability of the embankment. The variant images of electrical resistivity at the embankment were provided from the monitoring data and we could accurately locate the portion of which resistivities have sharply changed. Furthermore, we could estimate the stability of the embankment more effectively and quantitatively by jointly interpreting the monitoring data of resistivity, water level, pore water pressure, and subsurface displacement. The monitoring experiments in this study led us to the conclusion that for the efficient maintenance of the water utilization facilities, monitoring the resistivity data and hydrological data would be much more preferable to performing the just one-time measurements.

Various difficult problems occur due to insufficient bearing capacity or excessive settlements when constructing roads or large complexes. Accurate predictions on the final settlement and consolidation time can help in choosing the ground improvement method and thus enables to save time and expense of the whole project. Asaoka's method is probably the most frequently used for settlement prediction which are based on Terzaghi's one dimensional consolidation theory. Empirical formulae such as Hyperbolic method and Hoshino's method are also often used. However, it is known that the settlement predicted by these methods do not match with the actual settlements. Furthermore these methods cannot be used at design stage when there is no measured data. To find an elaborate method in predicting settlement in embankments using various test results and actual settlement data from domestic sites, Back-Propagation Neural Network(BPNN) and Recurrent Neural Network(RNN) were employed and the most suitable model structures were obtained. Predicted settlement values by the developed models were compared with the measured values as well as numerical analysis results. Analysis of the results showed that RNN yielded more compatible predictions with actual data than BPNN and predictions using cone penetration resistance were closer to actual data than predictions using SPT results. Also, it was found that the developed method were very competitive with the numerical analysis considering the number of input data, complexity and effort in modelling. It is believed that RNN using cone penetration test results can make a highly efficient tool in predicting settlements if enough field data can be obtained.

Landslides generally occur due to influences of the internal and external factors. Internal factors include ground characteristics, terrain and so on. External factors can also be divided into natural factors such as rainfall, ground water, earthquake and so on, and artificial factors resulting from cutting and embankments. Among these factors, rainfall becomes the most important external factors by means of which landslides occur in Korea. To appropriately deal with tile effects of pore water pressures due to rainfall, the method using the pore water pressure ratio(r$\_$u/) is generally applied in slope stability analysis or the design of slope reinforcements. Since tire value of r,, is in general not constant over the whole cross section, in most slope stability analyses the average values are used with little loss in accuracy. However, determination of the average values of r$\_$u/ to applied in the design is difficult problem. Therefore, in this study, tile average values of r$\_$u/ according to the intensity of rainfall and slope inclination is suggested based on results of the small scaled model tests using the artificial rainfall apparatus. It is found from the model tests that the average values of r$\_$u/ is about 0.07∼0.18(in case of the intensity of rainfall is 50mm/hr.), about 0.10∼0.28(in case of the intensity of rainfall is 100mm/hr.), and about 0.10∼0.33(in case of the intensity of rainfall is 150mm/hr.).
A vacuum pressure method has been developed to solve many problems in the conventional surcharge method such as embankments, and its application has increased in the country. Recently, to control target settlements in the field, there have been many studies on the comparison of settlements between vacuum pressure method and surcharge load method in the same conditions. In this study, the settlement characteristics of soil subjected to vacuum pressure and surcharge pressure are discussed. The results indicate that if vacuum pressure is applied to the improvement of soft ground, there will be inward lateral displacement and the vacuum pressure will induce generally less settlement than a surcharge load of the same magnitude. The range of settlement reduction ratio is 0.54~0.67 based on Hooke's law, 0.91 based on field cases, 0.81 based on laboratory oedometer tests, 0.75 based on the theory of elasticity and coefficient of volumetric compressibility and 0.77~0.93 in its recent applications to the thick soft ground.

Water purification facilities utilizing three technologies - a detention pond, an artificial wetland and an ecological revetment - were installed in waterfront spaces, including river embankments and watersides that have so far been left neglected, and then their water purification levels were analyzed in this study. The water purification facilities were found to show average removal efficiencies of 48.6% in suspended solid (SS), 30.5% in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), 18.4% in total nitrogen (T-N) and 27.3% in total phosphorus (T-P) during rainfall. The removal efficiencies during non-rainfall were 33.2% in SS, 28.6% in BOD, 13.7% in T-N and 17.3% in T-P. These results showed that the water purification facilities using a detention pond, an artificial wetland and an ecological revetment can be used as a useful natural water purification technology in in waterfront spaces.

Various soil behaviors usually occurring in the geotechnical problems, such as, cutting and embankments, stability of slope, seepage, consolidations, shearing failures and liquefaction, should be predicted and analyzed in any way. An approach of these predictions may be followed by the development of the constitutive equations as first and subsequently solved by numerical methods. The purpose of this paper is develop the constitutive equation of sands uder monotonic or cyclic loadings. The constitutive equation which is based on elasto-plastic theory, modified anisotropic consolidated stress parameter by Sekiguchi et al and Pender's theory is derived. And the equation is included a new stress parameter, hardening function, Bauschinger's effects and Pender's theory. The model is later evaluated and confirmed the validity by the test data of Ottawa sand, Banwol sand Hongseong sand. The following conclustions may be drawn: 1. The consititutive equation which is based on elasto-plastic theory, modified anisotropic consolidated stress parpameter by Sekiguchi et al and Pender's theory is derived. The equation in included a new stress parameter, hardening function, Bauschinger's effect and Pender's theory. 2. For Ottawa sand, the result of the constitutive equation shows a better agreement than that of Oka et al. The result of axial strain agrees well with the tested data. However, the result of horizontal strain is little bit off for the cyclic loadings or large stress. It is thought that the deviation may be improved by considering Poisson's ratio and precise measurement of shear modulus. 3. Banwol sand is used for the strain and stress tests with different relative densitites and confining pressures. The predeicted result shows a good agreement with the tested data because the required material parameters were directly measurd and determined form this laboratory. 4. For Hongseong sand, the tests under same amplitude of cyclic deviatoric stress shows a similar result with the tested data in absolute strain. It shows the acute shape of turning point because the sine wave of input is used in the test but the serrated wave in prediction.
The failure of geogrids can be defined as an excessive creep strain which causes the collapse of slopes and embankments. In this study, the lifetime of knitted polyester geogrids was predicted by using SIM(Stepped Isothermal Methods using TTS principal) and statistical data analysis techniques. The results indicate that the creep strain was 8.74, 8.79, 8.80% with 2.16~2.20% of CV% at 75, 100, 114 years, respectively and the creep strain reaches 9.3% after 100 years of usage at $27^{\circ}C$ which meets the required lifetime(creep strain less than 10% after 100 years of usage) in the fields. The SIM method is shown to be effective in reduction of uncertainty associated with inherent variability of multi-specimen tests and shorter test times than conventional TTS(Time-Temperature Superposition).
