Punching shear failure in pile-supported embankment (성토지지말뚝으로 지지된 성토지반내 펀칭전단파괴)

  • In this study, a computer program to predict the behavior of laterally loaded single pile and pile groups was developed by using a beam-column analysis in which the soils are modeled as nonlinear springs by a family of p-y curves for subgrade modulus. The special attention was given to the lateral displacement of a single pile and pile groups due to the soil condition and the cap rigidity. The analysis considering group effect was carried out for $2{\times}2$ and $3{\times}3$ pile groups with the pile spacing 3.0B, 4.0B and 5.0B. Based on the results obtained, it is found that the overall distributions of deflection, slope, moment, and shear force in a single pile give a reasonable results irrespective of cap connectivity conditions. It is also found that even though there are some deviations in deflection prediction compared with the observed ones, the prediction by present analysis simulates much better the general trend observed by the centrifuge tests than the numerical solution predicted by PIGLET.

Effects of new construction technology on performance of ultralong steel sheet pile cofferdams under tidal action

  • Cofferdams made of teel sheet piles are commonly utilized as support structures for excavation of sea-crossing bridge foundations. As cofferdams are often subject to tide variation, it is imperative to consider potential effects of tide on stability and serviceability of sheet piles, particularly, ultralong steel sheet piles (USSPs). In this study, a real USSP cofferdam constructed using new construction technology in Nanxi River was reported. The design of key parts of USSP cofferdam in the presence of tidal action was first introduced followed by the description of entire construction technology and associated monitoring results. Subsequently, a three-dimensional finite-element model corresponding to all construction steps was established to back-analyze measured deflection of USSPs. Finally, a series of parametric studies was carried out to investigate effects of tide level, soil parameters, support stiffness and construction sequence on lateral deflection of USSPs. Monitoring results indicate that the maximum deflection during construction occurred near the riverbed. In addition, measured stress of USSPs showed that stability of USSP cofferdam strengthened as construction stages proceeded. Moreover, the numerical back-analysis demonstrated that the USSP cofferdam fulfilled the safety requirements for construction under tidal action. The maximum deflection of USSPs subject to high tide was only 13.57 mm at a depth of -4 m. Sensitivity analyses results showed that the design of USSP cofferdam system must be further improved for construction in cohesionless soils. Furthermore, the 5th strut level before concreting played an indispensable role in controlling lateral deflection of USSPs. It was also observed that pumping out water before concreting base slab could greatly simplify and benefit construction program. On the other hand, the simplification in construction procedures could induce seepage inside the cofferdam, which additionally increased the deflection of USSPs by 10 mm on average.

  • Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement. Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. The in-situ tests were carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. In-situ tests area was divided into two areas by material used. One is Sand Drain(SD) and Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) area, the other is Gravel Drain(GD) and Gravel Compaction Pile(GCP) area. Both areas were monitored to obtain the information on settlement, pore water pressure and bearing capacity by measuring instruments for stage loading caused by embankment. The results of measurements were analyzed, The clogging effect was checked at various depth in gravel column after the test. According to the test results, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel pile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. It is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material. Gravel is considered to be a better material than sand for bearing capacity, and it is found that bearing capacity is larger when gravel is used as a gravel compaction pile than as a gravel drain.

  • In this study, cohesion of soft ground, soft ground depth and embankment height varying conditions, such as the impact of each condition after the calculation of the range, SCP was performed to evaluate the applicability of the method. And Cu = 5.0tf/$m^2$, embankment height is 3.0m below 15.0m depth rouge anti Floor, Cu = 3.0tf/$m^2$, embankment height of 5.0m 12.0m depth below the soft soil, Cu = 5.0tf/$m^2$, If the depth of soft soil embankment height of 7.0m and below 5.0m was applicable.

  • The mechanism of load transfer by punching shear in pile-supported embankments is investigated. Based on the geometric configuration of the punching shear observed in sand fills on soft ground, a theoretical analysis is carried out to predict the embankment loads transferred on a cap beam according to punching shear developed in pile-supported embankments. The equation presented by the theoretical analysis was able to consider the effect of various factors affecting the vertical loads transferred on the cap beam. The reliability of the presented theoretical equation is investigated by comparing it with the results of a series of model tests. The model tests were performed on cap beams, which had two types of width; one is narrow width and the other is wide width. Sand filling was performed through seven steps. Two types of loading pattern were applied at each filling step; one is the long-term loading, in which sand fills at each filling step were kept for 24 hours, the other is the short-term loading, in which sand fills at each filling step were kept for 2 hours. The vertical loads measured in all model tests show good agreement with the ones predicted by the theoretical equation. Finally, the predicted vertical loads also show good agreement with the vertical loads measured in a well-instrumented pile-supported embankment in field, where cap beams were placed on too wide space.

Numerical Study on the Effects of Geosynthetic Reinforcement on the Pile-supported Embankment (수치해석을 통한 성토지지말뚝에 대한 토목섬유 보강 효과 분석)

  • Recently pile-supported embankments have emerged as an optimum method when the rapid construction and strict deformation of structures are required on soft soils. Especially geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported (GRPS) embankments are used worldwide as they can provide economic and effective solutions. However the load transfer mechanism in GRPS embankments is very complex, and not yet fully understood. Particularly the purpose and effect of geosynthetic inclusion are ambiguous and considered as an auxiliary measure assisting the arching effect of piles. Numerical parametric study using 3D finite element method has been conducted to investigate the effect of geosynthetic reinforcement on the load transfer mechanism of GRPS embankments. Numerical results suggested that as more stiffer geosynthetic is included, arching effect decreases considerably and the load concentration to the piles mostly caused by tension effect of geosynthetic. This finding is contradictory to the common understanding that geosynthetic inclusion only enhance the efficiency of load transfer. Consequently the design parameters determined from the numerical analyses are compared with those of three existing design methods. The problems of the existing methods are discussed.

Time effect of pile-soil-geogrid-cushion interaction of rigid pile composite foundations under high-speed railway embankments

  • Centrifuge model tests were used to simulate pile-raft composite foundation and pile-geogrid composite foundation with different pile spacing for researching the time effect of negative skin friction of rigid piles in high-speed railways. The research results show that the negative skin friction has a significant impact on the bearing capacity of composite foundation. Pile-raft composite foundation has higher bearing capacity compared to pile-geogrid composite foundation to reduce the effect of negative skin friction on piles. Both the foundation settlement and negative skin friction have significant time effect. The distribution of skin friction can be simplified as a triangle along the pile. The neutral point position moves deeper in the postconstruction stage at larger pile spacing. For pile-geogrid composite foundation, the setting of pile-cap affects the position of neutral point in the post-construction stage. Reinforced cushion with geotextile may promote the better performance of cushion for transmitting the loads to piles and surrounding soils. Arching effect in the cushion of the composite foundation is a progressive process. The compression of the rigid piles contributes less than 20% to 25% of the total settlement while the penetration of the piles and the compression of the bearing stratum below the pile tips contribute more than 70% of the total settlement. Some effective measures to reduce the settlement of soils need to be taken into consideration to improve the bearing capacity of pile foundation.

Reinforcement and Arching Effect of Geogrid-reinforced and Pile-supported Embankments (지오그리드와 말뚝으로 보강된 성토지반의 보강 및 아칭효과 연구)

  • Geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported embankments have been increasingly used and researched around the world. The inclusion of one or multiple geosynthetic reinforcements over the pile is intended to enhance the efficiency of load transfer from soft ground to piles, to reduce total and differential settlement and increase global or local stability. In this paper, the reinforcement effectiveness and arching effect of the geogrid-reinforced and pile-supported embankments have been studied in terms of field model tests and numerical analysis with varying the space between piles and reinforcement. 2-dimensional numerical analysis has been conducted using the FLAC (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua) program. And load transfer mechanisms between soil-piles-geogrid were investigated. The mechanisms of load transfer can be considered as a combination of embankment soil arching, tension geogrid, and stress concentration due to the stiffness difference between pile and soft ground. Based on the field model test and numerical analysis results, it was found that the geosynthetic reinforcement slightly interferes with soil arching, and helps reduce differential settlement of the soft ground. Also. at the D/b=3 (D: spacing of pile cap, b: diameter of pile), the total settlement is reduced by about $40\%$ compared to that without reinforcement. For $D/b{\ge}6$, the effectiveness of geogrid reinforcement in reducing settlement is negligible.

Behavior of the Embankment on Normally Consolidated Clay Supported by the Piled Raft (Piled Raft 기초로 지지된 연약지반 상의 제방의 거동)

  • A railway embankment route extending to 2 km was laid on normally consolidated clay in the West Gimhae Plain. This embankment was first built using the stage-construction technique, but longitudinal cracks suggesting arc sliding appeared on the surface of the embankment immediately after the first stage of its construction. As an alternative, the piled raft was installed on the failed embankment and then the remaining height of the embankment was raised. The behavior of the piled raft was monitored with different instruments during construction. This paper describes the monitoring results and analyses. The results show that if the pile group essentially exhibits the behavior of friction piles, the piled raft foundation performs well even in normally consolidated soft clay.
