  • This study was conducted to find out the characteristics of the expanded road embankment constructed by the lightweight air-mixed soil (slurry density $10kN/m^3$) for a short-term without any ground improvement. Compression strength, capillary rise height of the lightweight air-mixed soil and settlement behavior of soft ground were studied. Compression strengths of the specimens sampled at the site after 1 and 5 months of construction were all satisfied the required strength 500 kPa. However, it was not convinced the homogeneity construction, because the values of strength were depending on the sampled location. Also, strength difference between laboratory and site specimens were found about 19%, and thus it should be considered for mixing design. Capillary rise reached about 20 cm for 70 hours because of a numerous tiny pores existed inside the lightweight air-mixed soil. Relationship between settlement and time of the soft ground placed underneath the expanded embankment was estimated by using the measured data and back analysis technique. The current average consolidation ratio and the final settlement after 120 months later were estimated about 32% and 4.5cm, respectively. This settlement is much less value than the allowable settlement 10cm for this structure.

  • The influence of the pile diameter, center to center pile spacing, internal friction angle of embankment soil, and height of embankment on the arching efficacy of the embankment pile was investigated. The arching efficacy, which was derived by the arch model developed in the embankment soil was calculated using two methods, one that considers crown failure of the arch and the other that considers load on the pile cap and critical relative spacing ratio for which the arching efficacy calculated by the two methods are the same. According to the computed results in this study, the arching efficacy calculated from a consideration of the load on pile cap governs when the relative spacing ratio becomes smaller and that calculated from the theory of crown failure governs when the relative spacing ratio becomes larger. The critical relative spacing ratio below which the arching efficacy calculated from a consideration of the load on pile cap governs the design decreases with increasing value, which is defined by the ratio of the pile diameter to the pile center to center spacing. Critical relative spacing ratios, which correspond to the values of 0.5 and 0.2 were 0.35 and 0.85, respectively. Considering the computed results, the critical relative spacing ratio decreases with increasing Rankine passive earth pressure coefficient and critical relative spacing ratios, which correspond to values of 5 and 2, were 0.23 and 0.85, respectively. The arching efficacy, which corresponds to the area ratio of 9%, was 54% and the one that corresponds to the value of 3 was 61%; the critical relative spacing ratios, which correspond to those arching efficacies, were greater than 0.5.

  • Stability analysis of the embankment as to water level varation is the most important problem in the safety of the slope because the stress of embankment inside varies as to drawdown of seepage line. Especially when the water level is rapidly drawdown, because the flow direction of the free surface changes the toe of embankment, the factor of safety comes to small, therefore the embankment is dangered. For the purpose of studing these phenomena, the experimental models are built with sand in the laboratory. In the experimental consideration, the falling seepage line and the shape of failure are measured. This paper intends to study the failure slip surface, the relationship between the factor of safety and drawdown velocity, and hydraulic gradient. The results of the experimental study are summarized as follows; 1. Owing to the drawdown of free surface, sliding failure occurred in the upstream fill, the height of failure is 5~10, 9~15, and 13~21(cm) in each model. 2. In consideration of the distribution of pore water pressure Table-5 shows each factor of safety. In the relationship between the drawdown velocity and the factor of factor it's velocity should be limited to 0.21~0.28 (cm/sec), according to each models. In the relationship between the factor of safety and the hydraulic gradient within the upstream slope, it's gradient must be below 0.36~0.43.

  • Geosynthetic-reinforced and Pile-supported (GRPS) embankment method is widely used to construct structures on soft ground due to restraining residual settlement and their rapid construction. However, effect of cyclic loading has not been established although some countries suggest design methods through many studies. In this paper, cyclic loading tests were conducted to analyze dynamic load transfer characteristics of pile-supported embankment reinforced with geosynthetics. A series of 3 case full scale model tests which were non-reinforced, one-layer-reinforced, two-layer reinforced with geosynthetics were performed on piled embankments. In these series of tests, the height of embankment and pile spacing were selected according to EBGEO (2010) standard in Germany. As a result of the vertical load parts on the pile and on the geosynthetic reinforcement measured separately, cyclic loads transferred by only arching effect decreased with strength geosynthetic-reinforced case. However, final loads on the pile showed no differences among the cases. These results conflict with previous studies that reinforcement with geosynthetics increases transfer load concentrated on piles. In addition, it is observed that the load transferred to pile decreases at the beginning of cycle number due to reduction of arching effected by cyclic loading. Based on these results, transferred mechanism for cyclic load on GRPS system has been presented.

  • In this study, seepage control effect of relief well was evaluated quantitatively on embankment of small fill dam and levee. Seepage analysis of dam and levee were carried out according to the permeability of fill material and foundation and to analyze behaviour characteristics of seepage. The up-lift pressure at toe of embankment was analyzed which is generated by seepage according to relief well installation condition. The relief well could reduce pore water pressure which is to cause piping or up-lift pressure at foundation ground of embankment and it does not be influenced on geometric condition such as dam height and slope incline. In case of relative low permeable ground, the pore water pressure reduction effect of relief well was decreased compare with high permeable ground but it shows pore water pressure reduction effect compare with no relief well condition. The reduction effect of relief well shows relative gap according to diameter and penetration length of relief well and the installation length of relief well is the most effective factor for seepage control.

  • The purpose of this study is liquefaction phenomenon was simulated using the 1g shaking table test. Analysis of liquefaction and Re-liquefaction behavior according to the ground conditions was analyzed when an embankment exists above the ground. The soil used in the experiment was silica sand and the ground composition was a liquefied layer of 50cm (Case 1), a non-liquefied layer of 17.5cm and a liquefied layer of 32.5cm (Case 2). The embankment was formed by fixing the height of 10cm and the slope of the slope at a ratio of 1:1.8. For seismic waves, excitation of a 5Hz sine wave was performed for 8 seconds, and a total of 5 case excitations were performed. In Case 1, it was confirmed that liquefaction occurred at all depths during the first vibration excitation at the free-field and that liquefaction did not occur at all depths except 5cm at the third vibration excitation. At the center of the embankment, liquefaction occurred up to a depth of 20cm during the first vibration excitation, and it was confirmed that liquefaction did not occur at all depths except for a depth of 5cm during the second vibration excitation.

  • The lateral soil movement in soft grounds undergoing improvement with application of vertical drains is analyzed on the basis of monitoring data at three fields, in which fifty six monitoring sites are located. Based on the investigations, the criterions are suggested to predict the lateral soil movement. In order to predict the lateral soil movement in the improved soft grounds by using the dimensionless parameter R suggested by Marche & Chapuis (1974), it is desirable that the maximum lateral displacement in the soft ground below the toe of embankment should be applied to calculate R instead of the lateral displacement at the toe of embankment. The lateral soil movement may increase rapidly, if the safety factor of slope is less than 1.4 in case of high ratio of H/B (Thickness of soft ground/Embankment width) such as 1.15 or is less than 1.2 in case of low ratio of H/B such as 0.05. Also, the graph suggested by Tschebotarioff (1973), which illustrates the relationship between the maximum height of embankments and the undrained shear strength of soft grounds, can be applied to the evaluation for the possibility of the lateral soil movement due to embankments on soft grounds.

  • In this study, it was carried out reliability analysis and slope stability analysis in a standard cross-sectional embankment on high speed railway. It was confirmed that changing tendency of safety factor with various parameter of each soil materials properties and trends of the probability of failure according to the reliability index. The results have shown that a safety factor were relatively large affected an cohesions and internal friction angle of soil compared to the unit weight of soil. Also, most of the standard cross-sectional embankment in high speed railway was generally evaluated the level of below average (below average) by the reliability analysis according to criterion in US. Army but the 12m height of dry embankment case was shown bad condition as Poor.

  • Since the tide embankment construction started in 1991, the coastal environment in and around the Saemangeum area has undergone changes rapidly, there is a need for monitoring the environmental change in this region. Owing to high temporal and spatial heterogeneity of the coastal ecosystem and processes as well as the expense with traditional filed sampling at discrete locations, satellite remote sensing measurements offer a unique perspective on mapping a large region simultaneously because of the synoptic and repeat coverage and that quantitative algorithms used for estimating constituents' concentration in the coastal environments. Thus, the main objectives of the present study are to analyze the retrieved Suspended Sediment (SS) pattern to predict changes after the commencement of the tide embankment construction work in 1991. This is accomplished with a series of the Landsat TM/ETM+ imagery acquired from 1985-2002 (a total of 18 imageries). Instead of a simple empirical algorithm, we implement an analytical SS algorithm, developed by Ahn et al. (2003), which is especially developed for estimating SS concentration (SSC) in Case-2 waters. The results show that there is a significant change in SS pattern, which is mainly influenced by the tide and tidal height after the construction of the embankment work. As the construction progressed, the distribution pattern of SS has greatly changed, and the rate of SS concentration in the gap area of the dyke of post-construction has significantly increased.

  • The stresses on the buried steel pipe under embankment are analysed by the elasto-plastic theory using FEM to study the influences of the geometry of soil-conduit pipe system and the elastic modulus of the fill on the pipe responses . The geometry of the system considered in this study includes the height of embankment, the thickness of the pipe, and the width and the depth of the trench . By comparing the stresses computed by Marston-Spangler's pipe theory with those obtained from the elasto-plastic theory, Marston-Spangler's theory was discussed and analysed . It is found that the stress distribution around the pipe by elasto- plastic analysis is similar to that by Spangler's flexible pipe theory when the geometrical ratio (diameter/thickness) of the steel pipe is 400. And Spangler's flexible pipe theory does not seem to be suitable to analyse the buried steel pipe of which the geometrical ratio is lower than 200. The vertical loads by the rigid pipe theory are always larger than those by the flexible pipe theory regardness of the variations in the geometry of soil-conduit pipe system considered above and the elastic modulus of the fill.
