  • A cold roll-bonding process is applied to fabricate an AA6061/AA5052/AA6061 three-layer clad sheet. Two AA6061 and one AA5052 sheets of 2 mm thickness, 40 mm width, and 300 mm length are stacked, with the AA5052 sheet located in the center. After surface treatment such as degreasing and wire brushing, sample is reduced to a thickness of 1.5 mm by multi-pass cold rolling. The rolling is performed at ambient temperature without lubricant using a 2-high mill with a roll diameter of 400 mm at rolling speed of 6.0 m/sec. The roll bonded AA6061/AA5052/AA6061 complex sheet is then hardened by natural aging(T4) and artificial aging(T6) treatments. The microstructures of the as-roll bonded and age-hardened Al complex sheets are revealed by optical microscopy; the mechanical properties are investigated by tensile testing and hardness testing. After rolling, the roll-bonded AA6061/AA5052/AA6061 sheets show a typical deformation structure in which grains are elongated in the rolling direction. However, after T4 and T6 aging treatment, there is a recrystallization structure consisting of coarse equiaxed grains in both AA5052 and AA6061 sheets. The as roll-bonded specimen shows a sandwich structure in which an AA5052 sheet is inserted into two AA6061 sheets with higher hardness. However, after T4 and T6 aging treatment, there is a different sandwich structure in which the hardness of the upper and lower layers of the AA6061 sheets is higher than that of the center of the AA5052 sheet. The strength values of the T4 and T6 age-treated specimens are found to increase by 1.3 and 1.4 times, respectively, compared to that value of the starting material.

  • This experiment was carried out to clarify the causes of sterility in terms of pollination characteristics for the sterile-type cold damage as influenced by amount of nitrogen application and shading conditions in rice plants. The results obtained are as follows: The number of young microspore per anther was not changed greatly by amount of nitrogen application. The number of ripened pollen grains per anther decreased according to increase in nitrogen application and shading degree, but the anther length and stigma length were not significantly affected by those factors. The number of pollen grains on stigma decreased by intense shading. The fertility decreased with increased nitrogen application and intensified shading. The elongation of auricle distance per day was less in less nitrogen application and intense shading. The internode length of the first and the second from the top were shortened with intense shading, but that of the fourth was elongated. The number of spikelet per panicle decreased with increase in shading intensity.

  • AA1050/AA6061/AA1050 layered sheet was fabricated by cold roll-bonding process and subsequently T4 and T6 aging-treated. Two commercial AA1050 sheets of 1 mm thickness and one AA6061 sheet of 2 mm thickness were stacked up so that an AA6061 sheet was located between two AA1050 sheets. After surface treatments such as degreasing and wire brushing, they were then roll-bonded to a thickness of 2 mm by cold rolling. The roll-bonded Al sheets were then processed by natural aging (T4) and artificial aging (T6) treatments. The as roll-bonded Al sheets showed a typical deformation structure, where the grains are elongated in the rolling direction. However, after the T4 and T6 aging treatments, the Al sheets had a recrystallized structure consisting of coarse grains in both the AA5052 and AA6061 regions with different grain sizes in each. In addition, the sheets showed an inhomogeneous hardness distribution in the thickness direction, with higher hardness in AA6061 than in AA1050 after the T4 and T6 age treatments. The tensile strength of the T6-treated specimen was higher than that of the T4-treated one. However, the strength-ductility balance was much better in the T4-treated specimen than the T6-treated one. The tensile properties of the Al sheets fabricated in the present study were compared with those in a previous study.

  • Powder mixtures of $\beta$-SiC-TiC in a weight ratio of 2:1 containing 5-20 wt% additives ($Al_2O_3$-$Y_2O_3$) were liquid-phase sintered at $1830^{\circ}C$ for 1h by hot-pressing and subsequently annealed at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 6h to enhance grain growth. The annealed specimens revealed a microstructure of \"in situ-toughened composite\" as a result of the $\beta$longrightarrow$\alpha$ phase transformation of SiC during annealing. The increase of the content of additives accelerated the growth of elongated $\alpha$-SiC grains with higher aspect ratio and improved fracture toughness. The fracture toughness of SiC-TiC composite containing 20 wt% additive was 6.2 MPa.$m^{1/2}$.2}$.

  • An attempt was made to investigate the effect of brazing time on microstructure, microhardness, and corrosion of Zircaloy -4as well as the beryllium diffusion into its sheet. The sheets were coated with beryllium and brazed at $1020^{\circ}C$ for 20-40 minutes in $2{\times}10^{-5}$ torr vacuum atmosphere. 1. Microstructurally the brazed zone was largely divided into three regions: a region of continuous or partially formed of eutectic liquid films along grain boundaries; a region of precipitation in both grains and grain boundaries; a region of elongated wide structure of .alpha.-laths, which was not affected by beryllium. 2. Due to the precipitates, the beryllium-migrated region was hardened and the width of the hardened region increased with increasing brazing time. 3. Beryllium brazed Zircaloy -4 sheets showed a higher corrosion rate than those of as-received and heat-treated at a brazing temperature. 4. Diffusion coefficient of beryllium into Zircaloy -4 at $1020^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes was $7.67{\times}10^{-7}cm^2/sec.$ It seemed that Be penetrated Zircaloy -4 by forming eutectic liquid films along grain boundaries in the proximity of Be/Zr interface and it, thereafter, diffused into Zircaloy mainly by interstitial solid solution.

  • 1. Cathodic hydrogen charging considerably reduced the tensile ductility of ODS steels and a 9Cr-2W RMS. The hydrogen embrittlement of ODS steels was strongly affected by specimen sampling orientation, showing significant embrittlement in the T-direction. This comes from the microstructural anisotropy caused by elongated grains of ODS steels in L-direction. 2. The ODS steels contained a higher concentration of hydrogen than 9Cr-2W RMS at the same cathodic charging condition, and the critical hydrogen concentration required to transition from ductile to brittle fracture was in the range of $10{\sim}12$ wppm, which approximately 10 times larger than that of a 9Cr-2W martensitic steel. 3. The ODS steels showed a typical ductile to brittle transition behavior and it strongly depended on the specimen sampling direction, namely L- and T-direction. In T-direction, the SP-DBTT was about 170 L, irrespective of the ODS materials, and L-direction showed a lower SP-DBTT than that of T-direction.

  • Three kinds of $Si_3N_4$ powders (M-11, SN-ESP, and SN-E10) were gas-pressure sintered at $1700-1900^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under 18 atm $N_2$. Their densification behavior was investigated and compared as well as the mechanical properties and microstructure of the resulting ceramics. SN-ESP and SN-E10 started to reach nearly full densification at $1750^{\circ}C$ and showed almost no decomposition up to $1900^{\circ}C$. In contrast, M-11 was not fully densified until $1800^{\circ}C$ and showed about $3\%$ weigh loss at $1900^{\circ}C$ indicating poor thermal stability. SN-ESP and SN-E10 showed much higher strength both at room temperature and $1200^{\circ}C$ than M-11 when fully densified. Compared with SN-ESP, SN-E10 was not only a little better in strength (both at room temperature and $1200^{\circ}C$) and fracture toughness but also much higher in the Weibull modulus due to more interlocked microstructure by well elongated grains.

  • The powders of the system Si3N4-Y2O3-AlN were prepared using Si(OC2H5)4 and YCl3.6H2O together with commercial AlN powder. $\alpha$-Si3N4 was prepared by the carbothermal reduction and nitridation of the hydrolyzed gel at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 10h in N2 atmosphere. YCl3.6H2O was observed to be changed to Y2O3 during the reaction. $\alpha$-Sialon(X=0.2, 0.4, 0.6) ceramics were obtained by hot-pressing the Si3N4-Y2O3-AlN mixture at 178$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h under 30 MPa. The content of $\alpha$-Sialon increased with increasing metal solubility(x value) and $\alpha$-Sialon single phase was obtained at the metal solubility of 0.6. With increasing metal solubility, flexural strength, fracture toughness and thermal shock resistence were decreased, while the microhardness was increased. Large elongated $\beta$-Si3N4 grains were mainly observed at lower metal solubility. Mechanical prorerties of the sintered ceramics with X=0.2 were measured as follows : flexural strength ; 650 MPa, fracture toughness ; 3.63 MN/m3/2, hardness ; 14.7 GPa, thermal shock resistence temperature ; 58$0^{\circ}C$.

  • The main emphasis of this study was to utilize thixoextrusion process for improving extrudability of 7075, 7003 Al wrought alloys and AZ31 Mg wrought alloy. The results of thixbextrusion experiments about microstructures and extrusion pressures were compared with conventional hot extrusion results. The maximum extrusion pressure of thixoextrusion was greatly decreased compared with that of conventional hot extrusion. It was pointed out that the extrusion temperature dependence of the maximum extrusion pressure was large and the influence of extrusion temperature on the improvement of extrudability was remarkable in thixoextrusion. This will contribute to extrudability in terms of extrusion pressure, which in turn means that shorter process time is required and smaller extrusion machine can be applied for the same operation. The elongated grains to extrusion direction were generally observed during conventional hot extrusion, while the thixoextruded microstructures were isotropic.

  • PbVO3 (PVO), a polar magnetic material considered as a candidate of multiferroic, has ferroelectricity along the c-axis and 2-dimensional antiferromagnetism lying in the in-plane through epitaxial growth [1,2]. PVO thin films were grown on LaAlO3 (001) substrates under reduction atmosphere from a stable Pb2V2O7 sintered target using pulsed laser deposition method. Epitaxial growth of the PVO films is possible only under Ar atmospheren with no oxygen partial pressure. X-ray diffraction was used to investigate the phase formation and texture of the films. We confirmed epitaxial growth of the PVO films with crystalline relationship of PbVO3[001]//LaAlO3[001] and PbVO3[100]//LaAlO3[100]. In addition, surface morphology of the films displays drastic changes in accordance with the growth conditions. Elongated PVO grains are related to the Pb2V2O7 pyrochlore structure. The relation between structural deformation and ferroelectricity in the PVO films was examined by local measurement of piezoresponse force microscopy.
