  • Resricted opening of the mouth in children can be derived from a variety af extra and intra articular causes. A 5-year-old female patient with an elongated right coronoid process and with congenital missing teeth came to clinic for wearing of esthetic denture. A proper medical consultation and laboratory test had done for assessment a systemic syndrome related to her dental anomalies. The result was that her systemic findings dindn't accord specific signs and symptoms of Hallermann-Streiff syndrome. Unilateral coronoidectomy was fulfilled to improve mouth opening and subsequently endodontic and restorative procedure. Maxillary partial denture was delivered for esthetic problem. The periodic recall medical/dental check-up are recommended.

  • In order to develop the protoplast fusion method of the strains of Fusarium, the interspecific protoplast fusion was attempted between Fusarium poae and F. sporotrichioides. Various auxotrophic mutants were isolated by the treatment of N-Methyl-N'-Nitro-N-Nitrosoguanidine. The optimal conditions for the formation and regeneration of protoplasts were examined and the characteristics of a fusant were studied. As a results, protoplasts were readily obtained from 18 hours cultured mycelia by the treatment of driselase for 3 hours and 0.6 M KCl as a best osmotic stabilizer at pH 6.0 for the formation of protoplast. Sucrose was the most suitable for the regeneration. Polyetylene glycol (M.W. 8,000) in $CaCl_{2}$-glycine solution was used to induce the protoplast fusion. The interspecific fusion frequency between protoplasts among the auxotrophic mutants of the two strains ranged from $2.7*10^{-2}$ to $5.7*10^{-3}$ . DNA content and cellulase activity were rather increased in the interspecific fusant. The lag phase of growth curve was slightly elongated in the fusant.

  • This study was performed to define the effects of the cattle feces on aerobic composting of food wastes in vessel system. Weights of cattle feces added to food wastes of 3kg were 0.25, 0.50, 1.00 and 1.50kg, respectively. Reactors were operated with stirring for 1 hour per day by 1rpm and aeration for 2 hours per day. When the weight of cattle feces was increased, the highest temperature of sample was increased, the duration period of higher temperature was elongated, and the fluctuatio of pH was severs. When the weight of cattle feces was decreased, the final density was increased. The more cattle feces were added, the more porosity was increased, C/N ratio, salinity and conductivity were decreased. There facts denotes that the addition of cattle feces increases the efficiency of composting process and the final product of composting, namely compost.

  • We report a rare case of scalp arteriovenous malformation[AVM]. A 55-year-old woman presented with a pulsatile palpable mass on her left temporo-parietal scalp. She complained of insomnia because of bruit, which was audible when she lay on her left side. Computed tomography angiography[CTA] for the scalp vessel showed AVM on the left temporo-parietal region. Multiple enlarged arteries, such as the superficial temporal artery, posterior auricular artery, and occipital artery, were directly connected to the elongated dilated superficial temporal vein. Digital subtraction angiography also showed similar results. Fistulous portions were clearly delineated on both modalities. Surgical excision of the malformations, including feeding arteries and the draining vein, resulted in immediate relief of the symptoms. Usefulness of CTA in the diagnosis of vascular lesions on the scalp was emphasized.

  • There has been confusion in the classification of terminal myelocystocele (TMCC) due to its diverse morphology and vague pathoembryogenesis. TMCC could be summarized as having the essential features of an elongated caudal spinal cord extruding out of the dorsal extraspinal space that fuses with the subcutaneous fat, which is in the shape of a trumpet-shaped cerebrospinal fluid-filled cyst. The extraspinal portion of the extruded spinal cord is nonfunctional. The morphological features suggest that TMCC is formed during secondary neurulation, specifically the failure of the degeneration of the secondary neural tube near the time of the terminal balloon. This review discusses the definition, as well as the clinical and surgical features, of TMCC with special emphasis on its pathoembryogenesis.

  • Retained medullary cord (RMC) is a relatively recent term. Pang et al. newly defined the RMC as a late arrest of secondary neurulation leaving a non-functional vestigial portion at the tip of the conus medullaris. RMC, which belongs to the category of closed spinal dysraphism, is a cord-like structure that is elongated from the conus toward the cul-de-sac. Because intraoperative electrophysiological confirmation of a non-functional conus is essential for the diagnosis of RMC, only a tentative or an assumptive diagnosis is possible before surgery or in cases of limited surgical exposure. We suggest the term 'possible RMC' for these cases. An RMC may cause tethered cord syndrome and thus requires surgery. This article reviews the literature to elucidate the pathoembryogenesis, clinical significance and treatment of RMCs.

  • The opossum shrimp, Siriella Dana, 1850 belongs to the family Mysidae Haworth, 1825. It is the genus of an enormous number of species with frequent morphological variations comprising 84 valid species to date. Among the species, Siriella trispina Ii, 1964 has been recorded from the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea is reported from Korean water for the first time. Siriella trispina is characterized by its exceedingly elongated 5th pair of thoracopods, the spines on the inner ventral margin of the uropodal endopod armed with secondary spinules, and 4-5 pairs of spines on the base of the telson. In the present study, we describe Korean specimens of the species in detail with photographs and illustrations. Siriella trispina is the 8th Siriella species found in Korean fauna.

  • Two new species of Martensia (Delesseriaceae, Rhodophyta) are described from Jeju Island, Korea. Martensia palmata sp. nov. is characterized by the following traits: more or less linearly elongated lobes arising from the distal margin of the flabellate membranous section; intact latticework with coarse and loose mesh; numerous spine-like projections on the leading margin of the latticework; tetrasporangia produced in sori along the entire blade; spermatangia borne in sori on the membranous section and the longitudinal lamellae of the latticework; and cystocarps borne on the margins of the membranous section. Martensia projecta sp. nov. has the following characteristics: subdichotomously furcated blades, with terminal segments slightly attenuated toward the apex; blades with uneven surfaces; basal parts with a multi-layered parenchymatous construction; small and poorlydefined latticework; tetrasporangia and spermatangia produced in sori on the membranous section; and cystocarps borne on the marginal surfaces of the blades. The existence of M. projecta sp. nov. supports the proposal that the genus Opephyllum Schmitz in Schmitz et Hauptfleisch should be assigned to the genus Martensia.

  • An efficient method for the in vitro reassembly of homologous DNA sequences is presented. The proposed method involves obtaining single strands of homologous genes and hybridizing them to obtain partially hybridized heteroduplex DNA; cleaving the single-stranded regions of the heteroduplex DNA using S1 nuclease to generate double-strand DNA fragments; denaturing the double-strand DNA fragments to generate single-strand DNA fragments; conducting a series of polymerase chain reactions (PCR) using the single-strand DNA fragments as internal primers and a mixture of homologous DNA as templates to obtain elongated reassembled DNA; and finally, amplifying the reassembled DNA by a PCR using terminal primers. As a result, DNA reassembly could be achieved between homologous genes with a sequence similarity as low as 78%.

  • An image analysis was used for the interpretation of microstructures of ferrous metal artifacts. For the purposes, various microstructural features such as average grain size, phase area, shape factor, and composition of the inclusions, were parameterized for the information about manufacturing techniques such as casting, heating and tempering. The carbon content was determined through the evaluation of the amount of pearlite phase. As the amount of pearlite phase increased the shape factor also increased. Grain size was relatively smaller in trans-section than in cross-section. The manufacturing direction was trans-sectional because the orientation of inclusions was elongated lengthwise. All inclusions was of silicate groups and the manufacturing temperature was estimated up to $1450^{\circ}C$.
