A New Ophichthid Eel, Ophichthus rotundus(Ophichthidae, Anguilliformes) from Korea

  • A new species of Korean ophichthid eel, Ophichthus rotundus, is described on the basis of specimens collected from Kyehwado, Chollabuk-do, Korea. 0, rotundus is characterized by small eye, elongated and slender body, short head and trunk, small eye, long tail, low dorsal and anal fins, many vertebrae, and no spotted pattern on body and fins.

Leaf Anatomy of Parkia clappertoniana Keay(Mimosaceae)

  • The bipinnate-compound leaf of Parkia clappertoniana has prominent, long petiole with a pulvinal base. The pulvinus has wood, periderm, lenticels and extensive cortical layer. Its vascular bundles are elongated with alternating rays. The vascular bundles of the petiole, rachis and veins are oval, with conspicuous bundle caps. Stomatal complex is predominantly paracytic with occasional occurrence of anomocytic stomata near the midrib. The oval stomata have conspicuous stomatal ledges. Trichomes are unicellular, acicular and restricted to the rachis, petiole and pinnule mid-ribs and margin. Ecological and taxonomic significance of features is discussed.

Development of an Optical Waveguide Loss Measuring System using an Rectangular Glass Probe

  • The use of a glass-plate probe of rectangular shape is proposed for the measurement of transmission loss in optical waveguides. The light-collecting window is of a thin, rectangular shape and is perpendicular to the light streak, while the conventional fiberglass probe has a small circular face. This transversely elongated form results in a grate improvement of mechanical tolerance for the probe movement in the vortical as well as in the transverse direction. A theoretical investigation also presents a reasonable agreement with the experiments.

  • Seven different rice cultivars treated with different levels of gibberellic acid (0, 10, 50 and 100 PPM GA3) at panicle initiation stage. showed retardation effect on the panicle length and the 2nd internode from the top, where as, the total culm lengths were remarkably elongated, about 50-120% in short varieties and about 10-15% in the tall varieties over the control, mainly, because of the lower internodes elongation. The 2nd internode of Gamadi variety from Nepal was almost entirely shortened with GA3 application.

Fermi Large Area Telescope Observations of the Dark Accelerator HESS J1745-303

  • Reviewing the two MeV-GeV investigations in the field of the HESS J1745-303 performed using Fermi Large Area Telescope data, we confirmed that the emission peak comfortably coincides with 'Region A' in the TeV regime, which is the brightest part of this feature. The MeV-TeV spectrum can be precisely described by a single power-law. Also, recent investigation has shown that the MeV-GeV feature is elongated from 'Region A' toward the north-west, which is similar to the case of largescale atomic/molecular gas distribution.

  • The annealing behavior of a 5083 Al alloy deformed at cryogenic temperature was investigated, focusing on the evolution of microstructures and mechanical properties. Especially, the effects of annealing temperature, $150~300^{\circ}C$, and time, 3∼60min., on microstructures and mechanical properties of the sheets received 85% reduction at cryogenic temperature were investigated. The optimization of the annealing conditions resulted in a mixture of equiaxed grains and elongated subgrains, exhibiting a good combination of uniform elongation and high strength.

Dolichoectasia of vertebrobasilar artery presenting as facial pain: a case report

  • Dolichoectasia of the intracranial arteries is a rare condition characterized by elongated and tortuous arteries due to progressive destruction of the vessel walls. Although most patients present with cerebrovascular accidents, our patient presented with intractable facial pain along the distribution of the trigeminal nerve. Clinical examination revealed involvement of the 5th, 7th, and 8th cranial nerves, and subsequent MRI showed dolichoectasia of the left basilar artery. The patient experienced symptomatic relief after a trial of carbamazepine along with botulinum toxin injections.

Differentiation and Distrbution of the Choline Acetyltransferase-immunoreactive Nerve Cells in the Magnocellular Preoptic Nucleus of the Rat Forebrains during the Postnatal Development

  • This study was performed to investigate the differentiation and distribution of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT}-immunoreactive cells in the magnacellular preoptic nucleus (MCPO) of the postnatal and adult rat forebrains, utilizing techniques of immunocytochemistry. According to the cell shape and the ratio of long axis versus short axis of cell soma, the ChATimmunoreactive nerve cells in the MCPO were classified into six types: 1) round, 2) oval, 3) elongated, 4) fusiform, 5) triangular, and 6) polygonal types. Frequency distributions of the oval and round nerve cells on the postnatal day (PND) 0 were observed to be high. But in the adult, frequency distributions of the same cells were shown to decrease. Compared to those of the postnatal rats, frequency distributions of elongated, fusiform, triangular, and polygonal nerve cells in the adult were increased. The total mean volumes of ChAT-immunoreactive cell somata in the MCPO of PND 0 rat were the lowest, while those in the PND 17 rat were shown to be the highest and decreased in the adult. The soma volumes of the immunoreactive cells at the PND 17 were evenly distributed, but those in the other developmental stages (e.g. PND 7 and adult) appeared to exhibit unimodal distributions. On the electron micrography, the free ribosomes, polysomes, and rough endoplasmic reticula (RER) of the nerve cells in the MCPO of PND 21 rat forebrains were immunoreactive to ChAT in the tissues untreated with triton X-100. According to the observations in the present study, it is considered that the ChAT-immunoreactive nerve cells in the MCPO of the rat forebrains are differentiated throughout the following processes during the postnatal development: 1) increase in cell soma volumes, 2) development of neurites, 3) increase in the frequency of differentiated cell types, and 4) decrease in cell soma volumes. The ribosomes, polysomes, and RER are considered to be closely related to the intracellular localization and biosynthesis of the ChAT but not Golgi complex.

잣나무 Fibril 경사각(傾斜角)의 변이(變異)에 관한 연구(硏究) (Trends of Fibril Angle Variation in Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.)

  • 이 연구(硏究)의 목적(目的)은 우리나라의 주요(主要)한 수종(樹種)인 잣나무에 대(對)하여 fibril 경사각(傾斜角)의 변이(變異)을 알아 보기 위한 것이다. 1937년(年)에 I. W. Bailey 씨(氏)는 옥도(沃度)의 침상결정(針狀結晶)을 통하여 가도관이차막중층(假導管二次膜中層)이 fibril 경각측정(傾角測定)의 가능성(可能性)을 발표(發表)하였다. 그래서 필자(筆者)는 일본(日本)의 소림미일씨(小林彌一氏)의 간편법(簡便法)을 이용(利用)하여 이 연구(硏究)를 시도(試圖)하였는데 요약(要約)하면 다음과 같다. 1. Fibril 각도(角度)는 추재(秋材)보다는 춘재(春材)에서 더 크게 나타나 있다. 2. Fibril 경각(傾角)은 수피(樹皮)쪽 보다는 수(髓)쪽이 더 크게 나타나 있다. 3. 수(髓)에서 수피(樹皮)쪽으로 이행(移行)함에 따라 춘(春) 추재(秋材)의 차이(差異)는 수(髓)에 가까운 쪽에서 가장 크게 나타나 있다.
