UNVEILING THE PROPERTIES OF FLS 1718+59: A GALAXY-GALAXY GRAVITATIONAL LENS SYSTEM

  • We present the results of the analysis of FLS 1718+59, a galaxy-galaxy gravitational lens system in the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS) field. A background galaxy ($z_s=0.245$) is severely distorted by a nearby elliptical galaxy ($z_l=0.08$), via gravitational lensing. The system is analysed by several methods, including surface brightness fitting, gravitational lens modeling, and spectral energy distribution fitting. From Galfit and Ellipse we measure basic parameters of the galaxy, such as the effective radius and the average surface brightness within it. gravlens yields the total mass inside the Einstein radius ($R_{Ein}$), and MAGPHYS gives us an estimate of the stellar mass inside $R_{Ein}$. By comparing these parameters, we confirm that the lens galaxy is an elliptical galaxy on the Fundamental Plane and calculate the stellar mass fraction inside $R_{Ein}$, and discuss the results with regards to the initial mass function.

  • We present our analysis of a newly discovered galaxy-galaxy gravitational lens system in the First Look Survey (FLS) field. This object shows a highly distorted background galaxy (z=0.245) image by a nearby elliptical galaxy (z=0.08), which can be interpreted as a result of gravitational lensing. We model the lens with elliptical isothermal sphere model, and present the mass and potential distribution of the system.

  • A 3D structure production method for microstereolithography is a useful way that produces complex structures with flexible processes and low cost. Several UV curable resins were blended and the optimal resin for micro-lens fabricate was selected through viscosity, workability and transmission tests. It consists of 1, 6 - Hexanediol diacrylate with 15 Apha and Isobornyl acrylate for reducing some shrinkage. When fabricating a micro-lens array on large surface, some distortion of shape occurred because of the surface tension between cured part. To overcome this problem, the optimal processing conditions were derived from considering amount of the resin and surface tension. Large surface Micro-lens array, which are a type of elliptical convex and consist of 18,000 micro-lens in the range of 2cm*2cm were fabricated. The focal length to the X-axis and Y-axis were calculated. To verify the performance, measure an energy distribution of transmitted light from the Large surface Micro-lens array.

Null lens design for testing of elliptical surface (타원면경 측정 Null 렌즈 설계)

  • The null lens is designed for testing the elliptical (conic constant>O) mirror which is the third mirror of the off-axis Three Mirror Anastigmat (TMA) designed as a high resolution camera for remote sensing. The mixed type design is proposed as a new design type which has a small annular flat mirror, but has as twice sensitivity as the autostigmatic type design. It is also shown that the null lens of the Mixed type is better than that of the autostigmatic type in terms of the sensitivity of the wavefront distortion which is given as the magnitude of optical path difference with respect to the change of each surface parameters such as the radius of curvature, thickness of lenses and tested mirror.

A Design of Improved 100 GHz Lens Antennas for the ECEI System (ECEI 장치를 위한 향상된 성능의 100 GHz 렌즈 안테나 설계)

  • In this paper, a modified elliptical lens antenna design is proposed to improve the performance of 100 GHz mini-lens antennas used in the ECEI(Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging) module at KSTAR. A hemispherical lens is added on the bottom plate of the conventional elliptic lens antenna, and a 100 GHz dipole antenna is located on the end point of the hemispherical lens. Using geometrical optics, antenna radiated EM fields are designed to be totally reflected from the inner surface of the hemispherical lens, and thereby the antenna patterns are more focused toward the main beam. The validity of the proposed design is confirmed by the 3D EM simulator. The modified elliptical lens antenna provides 23.8 dB maximum gain, which is 2.2 dB gain improvement as compared with the conventional elliptic lens. Also, the side love levels of E- and H-planes are decreased by 2.6 dB and 3.4 dB, respectively.

A background galaxy (z = 0.245) is severely distorted by an elliptical galaxy (z = 0.08), by gravitational lensing. We analyze this system by several methods, including Ellipse and Galfit fitting, gravitational lens modeling (gravlens), and SED fitting. Properties of the lens galaxy can be obtained: from Galfit we measure the effective radius and the average surface brightness inside it, and from gravlens we estimate the total mass inside the Einstein radius (lensing mass). We use these parameters to check that the lens galaxy is located on the Fundamental Plane. Also, we conduct SED fitting for the lens galaxy and estimate the stellar mass, and compare this with the lensing mass of the lens galaxy to check the M-L relation.

  • Purpose: To represent the shape of toric corea in the elliptical function for the determination of curvature distribution and lacrimal thickness between cornea and contact lens when the lens is fitted. Methods: Topography measurements of corneal curvature and curvature equation derived from the assumed elliptical function were evaluated using the Excel program which included the necessary equation derived. Results: Mathematical expressions for the cornea whose ribbon shaped-topography image, in which the center does not coincide with the corneal apex, can be determined. Conclusions: For the application where the higher accuracy on the cornea is not required, such as higher order aberration, the cornea cal be expressed in the simple elliptical function.

  • This study is to present a fainting motion recognizing method by using fish-eye lens images to sense emergency situations. The camera with fish-eye lens located at the center of the ceiling of the living room sends images, and then the foreground pixels are extracted by means of the adaptive background modeling method based on the Gaussian complex model, which is followed by tracing of outer points in the foreground pixel area and the elliptical mapping. During the elliptical tracing, the fish-eye lens images are converted to fluoroscope images. the size and location changes, and moving speed information are extracted to judge whether the movement, pause, and motion are similar to fainting motion. The results show that compared to using fish-eye lens image, extraction of the size and location changes. and moving speed by means of the conversed fluoroscope images has good recognition rates.

Luminosity Distribution of Dwarf Elliptical-like Galaxies

  • We present the structural parameters of ~ 910 dwarf elliptical-like galaxies in the local universe ($z{\lesssim}0.01$) derived from the r-band images of the Sloan Digital SKy Survey (SDSS). We examine the dependence of structural parameters on the morphological types (dS0, dE, dEbc, dSph, and dEblue) and the environment. There is not much difference in the structural parameters among the five subtypes but the mean surface brightness within the effective radius (<${\mu}e$>) of dSph galaxies is clearly different from that of other subtypes. The frequency of disk features such as spiral arm, bar, lens, and rings strongly depends on the morphology of dwarf elliptical-like galaxies with no disk features in dSph galaxies. The absence of disk features and the low surface brightness of dSph galaxies are thought to be closely related to their low mass which leads to different evolution from other subtypes of dwarf elliptical-like galaxies. FINDING THE ACCELERATION PARAMETER IN MODIFIED NEWTONIAN DYNAMICS WITH ELLIPTICAL GALAXIES

  • MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) is an alternative to the dark matter paradigm. MOND asserts that when the magnitude of acceleration is smaller than the acceleration parameter $a_0$, the response of the system to gravity is stronger (larger acceleration) than the one given by Newtonian dynamics. The current value of $a_0$ is obtained mostly by observations of spiral galaxies (rotation curves and the Tully-Fisher relation). We attempt to estimate $a_0$ from the dynamics of elliptical galaxies. We seek elliptical galaxies that act as the lens of gravitational lensing systems and have velocity dispersion data available. We analysed 65 Einstein rings from the Sloan Len ACS survey (SLACS). The mass estimates from gravitation lensing and velocity dispersion agree well with each other, and are consistent with the estimates from population synthesis with a Salpeter IMF. The value of $a_0$ obtained from this analysis agrees with the current value.
