  • To investigate properties of the stellar contents of the resolved asymptotic giant branch stars in the nearby dwarf galaxies, we obtained wide-field JHKs images of the dwarf irregular galaxies NGC 6822, IC 1613 and the dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 205, using the WIRCam near-infrared imager of the CFHT. The obtained (J-Ks, Ks) and (H-Ks, Ks) color-magnitude diagrams for the resolved stars in the galaxies contain populations of foreground stars, super giant stars, red giant stars and the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Using corollary photometric data in the visible bands, AGB stars were selected in the color-magnitude diagrams with a wide wavelength baseline in color indices. In color-color diagrams of the resolved AGB stars, we identified C stars from M giant stars for each galaxies, i.e., 726 C stars in NGC 6822, 126 C stars in IC 1613 and 593 C stars in NGC 205. The number ratios of C stars to M-giants were estimated to be $0.59\pm0.03$ in NGC 6822, $0.30\pm0.03$ in IC 1613 and $0.14\pm0.01$ in NGC 205. From analyses of the correlations of the spatial distribution of the C/M ratios with the HI properties and dynamical structures of the target galaxies, we discuss environmental effects of the star formation in the galaxies. We also discuss the epochs of the AGB star formation in the galaxies by comparing theoretical isochrones with the color distributions and luminosity functions of the AGB stars.

  • A new species of Corydalis sect. Corydalis (Fumariaceae), Corydalis cornupetala Y.H. Kim et J.H. Jeong is described from Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do in Korea. This new species is distinguished from the other species of the sect. Corydalis by some flower characters such as, purplish white petal with two dark stripes and horn-shaped apex of outer petal. The linear leaflets of C. cornupetala are similar to the lineariloba type of C. remota Fisch. ex Max. or C. namdoensis B.U. Oh et J.G. Kim, but much longer and narrower. The linear or lanceolate bract of C. cornupetala is also distinctive from the elliptical shape of C. remota and C. namdoensis.

  • The swirling flow developing in Francis turbine draft tube under part load operation leads to pressure fluctuations usually in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 times the runner rotational frequency resulting from the so-called vortex breakdown. For low cavitation number, the flow features a cavitation vortex rope animated with precession motion. Under given conditions, these pressure fluctuations may lead to undesirable pressure fluctuations in the entire hydraulic system and also produce active power oscillations. For the upper part load range, between 0.7 and 0.85 times the best efficiency discharge, pressure fluctuations may appear in a higher frequency range of 2 to 4 times the runner rotational speed and feature modulations with vortex rope precession. It has been pointed out that for this particular operating point, the vortex rope features elliptical cross section and is animated of a self-rotation. This paper presents an experimental investigation focusing on this peculiar phenomenon, defined as the upper part load vortex rope. The experimental investigation is carried out on a high specific speed Francis turbine scale model installed on a test rig of the EPFL Laboratory for Hydraulic Machines. The selected operating point corresponds to a discharge of 0.83 times the best efficiency discharge. Observations of the cavitation vortex carried out with high speed camera have been recorded and synchronized with pressure fluctuations measurements at the draft tube cone. First, the vortex rope self rotation frequency is evidenced and the related frequency is deduced. Then, the influence of the sigma cavitation number on vortex rope shape and pressure fluctuations is presented. The waterfall diagram of the pressure fluctuations evidences resonance effects with the hydraulic circuit. The influence of outlet bubble cavitation and air injection is also investigated for low cavitation number. The time evolution of the vortex rope volume is compared with pressure fluctuations time evolution using image processing. Finally, the influence of the Froude number on the vortex rope shape and the associated pressure fluctuations is analyzed by varying the rotational speed.

  • Dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs), the most abundant galaxy type in clusters, were recently shown to exhibit a wide variety in their properties. Particularly, the presence of blue cores in some dEs, what we call dE(bc), supports the scenario of late-type galaxy infall and subsequent transformation into red, quiescent dEs. While several transformation mechanisms for these dE(bc)s within cluster environment have been proposed, all these processes are able to explain only some of the observational properties of dEs. In this context, internal kinematic properties of dE(bc)s provide the most crucial evidence to discriminate different processes for the formation of these galaxies. We present Gemini Multi Object Spectrograph (GMOS) long-slit spectroscopy of two dE(bc)s in the Virgo cluster. We obtained radial profiles of velocity and velocity dispersion out to ~1.3 effective radius. We found that two dE(bc)s exhibit kinematically decoupled components as well as distinct peculiar features in velocity profiles, supporting the scenario of mergers. We also found that these galaxies are structurally compatible with low surface brightness component of blue compact dwarf galaxies. We suggest that a part of dE(bc)s in the Virgo Cluster were formed through galaxy merger in low density environment such as galaxy group or outskirt of the cluster, and then were quenched by subsequent effects within cluster environment.

  • We have made a comparison of three cone models (an asymmetric cone model, an ice-cream cone model, and an elliptical cone model) in terms of space weather application. We found that CME angular widths obtained by three cone models are quite different one another even though their radial velocities are comparable with one another. In this study, we investigate which cone model is proper for halo CME morphology and whether cone model parameters are similar to observations. For this, we look for CMEs which are identified as halo CMEs by one spacecraft and as limb CMEs by the other ones. For this we use SOHO/LASCO and STEREO/SECCHI data during the period from 2010 December to 2011 June when two spacecraft were separated by $90{\pm}10$ degrees. From geometrical parameters of these CMEs such as their front curvature, we classify them into two groups: shallow cone (5 events) and near full-cone (28 events). Noting that the previous cone models are based on flat cone or shallow cone shapes, our results imply that a cone model based on full cone shape should be developed. For further analysis, we are estimating the angular widths of these CMEs near the limb to compare them with those from the cone models. This result shows that the angular widths of the ice-cream cone model are well correlated (CC = 0.81) with those of observations.

  • Measurements of the local heat transfer coefficients on a hemispherically concave surface with a round oblique impinging jet were made. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation of the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystal for the surface temperature measurements. The Reynolds number used was 23,000 and the nozzle -to -jet distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 and the jet angle was $\alpha$=0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$and 40$^{\circ}$. In the experiment, the maximum Nusselt number at all region occurred at L/d(equation omitted)6 and Nusselt number decreases as the inclined jet angle increases. For the normal jet the contours of constant Nusselt number are circular and as the jet is inclined closer and closer to the surface the contours become elliptical shape. The decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d> 0(upstream) on a surface curvature are higher than those on a flate plate and the decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d <0(downstream) on a surface curvature are lower than those on a flate plate. And also, the decreasing rate of local Nusselt number distribution at X/d <0(upstream) exhibit lower than with X/d <0(downstream) as jet angle increases. The second maximum Nusselt number occurred at long distance from stagnation point as jet angle increases.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the injection characteristics of non-circular effervescent type twin-fluid nozzles. For this purpose, two types of non-circular nozzles (E1, E2) and one kind of circular nozzle (C) were used. At this time, the Aerorator mounted on the nozzle used three different diameters to match the aspect ratio with the nozzle exit area. Therefore, experiments were performed according to three aspect ratios for each nozzle, and a total experiments were conducted. Experiments were carried out by controlling the amount of air flowing after fixing the flow rate of the liquid, and the nozzle internal pressure and SMD were measured, and the jet image was taken from the nozzle. The discharge coefficients of the three kinds of nozzles were compared with the conventional equation and the Jedelsky's equation, and the Jedelsky's equation was found to be about 4 times larger. The droplet size (SMD) injected from the nozzle was found to be smaller in the non-circular shape than in the circular shape, which is expected to be caused by the difference of the discharge coefficient values.

  • Blossom blight in strawberry was first observed in a green house in Nonsan, Damyang, and Geochang areas of Korea, between early January to April of 2012. Disease symptoms started as a grey fungus formed on the stigma, which led to the blossom blight and eventually to black rot and necrosis of the entire flower. We isolated the fungi purely from the infected pistils and maintained them on potato dextrose agar (PDA) slants. To test Koch's postulates, we inoculated the fungi and found that all of the isolates caused disease symptoms in the flower of strawberry cultivars (Seolhyang, Maehyang, and Kumhyang). The isolates on PDA had a velvet-like appearance, and their color ranged between olivaceous-brown and smoky-grey to olive and almost black. The intercalary conidia of the isolates were elliptical to limoniform, with sizes ranging from $5.0{\sim}10.5{\times}2.5{\sim}3.0{\mu}m$ to $4.0{\sim}7.5{\times}2.0{\sim}3.0{\mu}m$, respectively. The secondary ramoconidia of these isolates were 0- or 1-septate, with sizes ranging betweem $10.0{\sim}15.0{\times}2.5{\sim}3.7{\mu}m$ and $8.7{\sim}11.2{\times}2.5{\sim}3.2{\mu}m$, respectively. A combined sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer regions, partial actin (ACT), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF) genes revealed that the strawberry isolates belonged to two groups of authentic strains, Cladosporium cladosporioides and C. tenuissimum. Based on these results, we identified the pathogens causing blossom blight in strawberries in Korea as being C. cladosporioides and C. tenuissimum.

  • In Diplonichus esakii each ovary comprises five telotrophic ovarioles. In the fourth instar, the anterior part of the germarium consists of undifferentiated cells. The middle part contains a spherical trophic and the posterior part comprises young oocytes, followed by the upside downbell shape prefollicular tissue. The bell form is the standard characteristic in this instar larva, and the nutritive cord is found although somewhat indistinctly. In the fifth instar larva, the trophic core is elliptical form, and the oocyte is found at the base of the core. The oocytes are connected with the ocre by the nutritive cord. In the prefollicular tissue are also found some oocytes. In the adult, the vitellarium is filled by the developmental oocytes. The yolk granules inside each oocyte migrate from the base of the follicular epithelial cells to the center of the oocyte. Finally, the ooplasm of the oocyte becomes completely homogeneous. Therefore, according to the advancing of instars the nutritive cord developes completely before the oocyte has chorion and the follicular epithelial cell binucleates. The upper part of the ovariole consists of unchorionated oocytes, and the proximal part comprises chorionated oocytes in the adult.
