In this study, elementary mathematics textbooks from grade 1 to grade 6 of Korea and Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture are compared. This study is limited to number area. In this study, textbooks of Korea are developed according to the 2007 curriculum and published between 2009 and 2011 and textbooks of Yanbian are published between 2009 and 2010. Seven implications for developing Korean textbooks can be drew from Yanbian textbooks as conclusions. First, it is necessary to consider using counters to teach place values. Second, it is necessary to consider reading inequalities in style of one to one correspondence between signs and words. Third, it is necessary to consider mentioning explicitly that it is possible to express the concrete whole which has a continuous quantity as natural number 1. Fourth, it is necessary to consider introducing term of fraction line that separates the numerator and denominator. Fifth, it is necessary to consider mentioning explicitly the properties of the fraction. Sixth, it is necessary to consider broadening examples to use decimals. Seventh, it is necessary to consider stating clearly that it is possible to make an additional place of decimals by adding a zero at the right end of the decimals.
In Korea where there is the national curriculum and teachers depend highly on textbooks, the school mathematics is based on curriculum and textbooks. Especially considering responsibility that textbooks should reflect the curriculum properly, it is necessary to analyze the connection of mathematics curriculum and textbooks in order to review and improve the quality of our mathematics education. This research analyzes the connection of curriculum and textbooks for 5~6 grades and aims to have some implications for revision of the textbooks when application of elementary mathematics textbooks based on the 2009 revised national curriculum is completed to all grades. Following the preceding research for 1~2 and 3~4 grades, this research sets 5~6 grades as a subject of analysis and has four contents of analysis; analysis of textbooks based on restructured achievement criteria, analysis of connections between unit objectives of textbooks and the reconstructed achievement criteria, analysis of textbooks related to mathematical terms and symbols, and analysis of textbooks related to mathematical process. The result of analysis has some implications to develop textbooks based on the 2015 revised national curriculum.

In this paper I analyzed mathematics textbooks of elementary school in 1st curriculum. I found that they used the natural closed items and children's play. And they also delayed the introduction of the symbol and letters. Finally they had the system to practice what students learned repeatedly.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the sentences related with mathematical modeling in the third and fourth grade mathematics textbooks in accordance with changing of Korean mathematics curricula. In the preliminary analysis, the researchers used the criteria that Kim(2010) had analyzed Mathematics in Context[MiC], and analyzed South Korean textbooks from the perspective of mathematical modeling. The researchers revised them for the analysis criteria among South Korean elementary mathematics textbooks and employed them as the analysis framework of the present study. From the mathematical modeling perspective, the study reached the following conclusions in accordance with the change of textbooks from the 7th curriculum to the 2009 revised curriculum. The contexts of real-world situations presented in the textbooks are increased in all areas except Probability and Statistics areas, the methods of expression of mathematical model are diversified in all areas except Patterns area, and the communication types are also diversified and frequencies increased in all areas except Patterns area. Based on this research, several suggestions were made for the development of future textbooks.

In this study, we analyzed how the speed concept has been handled in Korean elementary mathematics textbooks and suggested some didactical implications for revising the teaching of speed concept. To do this, we investigated the curriculum documents, textbooks and teacher's manuals from the first curriculum to the 2009 revision curriculum. The results show that the speed concept of the elementary mathematics in Korea has been based on the concept of average speed and that the approach of applying the value of ratio has been strengthening more than the aspect of proportional relation. So we suggested two didactical suggestions: 1) the teaching of the speed concept should start with uniform movements. 2) the reasoning of proportional relation should be more strengthened.
Astronomy areas in the elementary science textbooks of Korea and the U.S.A. have been compared to find advantages and disadvantages of Korean textbooks. The analysis objects are the 7th national curriculum science textbooks for Korea and the Macmillan McGraw-Hill(MMH) science textbooks for the U.S.A. The results are as follows: First, in contexts, Korean science textbooks contain mostly inquiry activities and partly reading materials. However, MMH ones contain mostly explanations including photographs, related activities, and various reading materials. Second, in the contents and order, the observation activities of constellations are emphasized in Korean science textbooks, while the MMH ones explain solar system up to the universe in details. In addition, Korean science textbooks deal with one subject only once during the whole elementary course while MMH ones deal with one subject repeatedly in several grades. Third, in the frameworks of the international mathematics and science study (TIMSS) 2007, Korean science textbooks do not introduce some contents presented in TIMSS 2007, whereas MMH textbooks introduce every one of them in time. Fourth, the major subjects such as change of moon phases, constellations, the solar system, and change of seasons are handled independently in Korean science textbooks without strong correlation, while they are systematically done related with the rotation and the revolution of the earth in MMH ones.
This paper examined vocabulary used in elementary mathematics textbooks and workbooks for the grade band of 5~6. This study focused on the adequacy of vocabulary using 9-degree of semantic difficulty. The results of this study showed that most vocabulary in the textbooks and workbooks was adequate for the target grades. In some cases, however, vocabulary that was supposed to be difficult for the fifth and sixth graders was employed in a way that the meaning of such vocabulary was difficult for students to infer in the given context. The most frequent vocabularies in the main activities of the mathematics textbooks included 'method', 'investigate', 'number', 'communicate', and 'represent'. Based on these results, this study provides 5~6 grade textbook writers with implications on what to further consider in dealing with vocabulary in instructional materials.
Angle concepts have a multifaceted nature such as quantitative aspects as the amount of rotation, qualitative aspects as geometric shapes, and relationship aspects made with planes or lines. This study analysed angle concepts and introduction methods of angles in elementary mathematics textbooks which have been used from the Syllabus Period to the 2015 Revised Mathematics Curriculum. First, the concepts of angles in mathematics textbooks focus through the definitions, representations, and components of angles presented in mathematics textbooks are analyzed. Secondly, how various aspects of each angle are sequenced through the tasks or activties in the introduction of lesson is looked. As a result of analysis, the methods of introducing angles in the changes of mathematics textbooks have mainly focused on learning about geometric shapes and relations of components. In the mathematics classroom, students should experience various aspects of geometric shapes, rotations, relational aspects of points, lines and surfaces, and support and link them to form a wide range of concepts.
Ratio and rate are key topics in the area of 'Patterns', but there are various perspectives on them. This study compared and analyzed the perspectives of Korean and Singaporean mathematics textbooks on ratio and rate, and explored how teaching and learning methods develop according to each perspective in terms of quantitative reasoning. To this end, we reorganized the analysis criteria based on some studies, and analyzed the textbooks of the two countries in relation to context, relationship, and representation. The results of the study are as follows. Regarding the context, there were differences in the situations, types of units and use of units of the problems presented in textbooks. In terms of relationship, there were differences in the types of two quantities and relationship of quantities. Lastly, there were differences in the representation of ratio and rate. Through these results, we found that elementary mathematics textbooks in Korea and Singapore take different perspectives on ratio and rate. In particular, the perspective taken by Korean textbooks on ratio and rate had unique points different from that of other previous studies. Considering this Korean perspective, we suggested some implications that could help improve textbooks related to ratio and rate and teach them meaningfully.
Even though fractions make up one of the most important concepts in the domain of numbers in elementary math, it is difficult to teach or learn them due to their different quantity concepts and notation methods from natural numbers and their various concepts. The didactic transposition of fractions is thus important, and there is a need to examine the didactic concepts of fractions used in the South Korean textbooks for its research. This study compared elementary math textbooks among South Korea, Taiwan, and China and investigated differences in the instructional time and order of fraction concepts in the textbooks according to their didactic concepts and also differences in the instructional methods according to quantitative concepts.
