영어발음교육과 발음기호 (Phonetic Alphabet as a Pronunciation Guide)

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest that the International Phonetic Alphabet be included in English curriculum and taught in English classroom. Current English curriculum for elementary and middle school students doesn't specify anything for the education of the IPA. The knowledge of IPA is essential for the students to study by themselves how to pronounce English words. The IPA, however, is either too little or too much to be taught at school. It is too little in that it doesn't tell us anything about allophones, the knowledge of which could enable us to get rid of foreign accents as much as possible. It is too much in that it can represent more than one sounds (e.g., /ɔ/ in American and British English). To overcome these drawbacks, it should be introduced gradually with the allophones in the same environments. The correct vowel sounds should be introduced with the aid of pronunciation dictionary so that the students could get their own vowel quality. Moreover, the IPA symbol should be adopted for the English textbooks.

2015개정 초등교육과정에 나타난 다문화요소분석 (Analysis of Multicultural Elements in the 2015 Revised Elementary Curriculum)

  • The purpose of this paper was to analyze multicultural elements and propose measures to strengthen them in the 2009and the 2015 school curriculum. Based on Kim Cheong-ha (2015), the multi-cultural guidance elements and Bennett (2003:32-35) the target system and Choi Moo-sung and Kim Soon-ja (2009) were reconstructed and analyzed. Multicultural elements shown in the 2015 revised curriculum were analyzed for cultural diversity, recognition and tolerance, community awareness, and self-identity. The analysis targets analyzed multicultural elements of 'seeking human beings', 'core competences' and 'school organization and operation' during the elementary education curriculum in 2009. As a result of analyzing the multicultural elements of the former primary education process, 'cultural diversity' is 1,Recognition and tolerance'0, community spirit'3, and 'self-reliant'2 total6. In the new elementary school curriculum, 18 were analyzed as 'cultural diversity'1, 'Recognition and tolerance'1, 'community spirit'8, and 'self-identity'8. The first analysis of multi-cultural factors appearing in the new elementary school curriculum should include the addition of multicultural elements 'cultural diversity' and 'cultural diversity area' and 'education and tolerance' to the following: Second, to grow into a balanced multicultural society member, it proposes an enhanced multicultural curriculum in four areas: cultural diversity, recognition and tolerance, ccommunity spirit, and self-identity.

온라인 컨텐츠 및 화상회의를 활용한 하이브리드 모델을 통한 영어 능력 향상 효과 분석 (Analysis of English Ability Improvement Effect through a Hybrid Model using Online Contents and Video Conferencing)

  • 영어 능력 향상에 있어 원어민 교사 활용은 매우 중요하다. 그러나 농어촌의 학교들은 생활문화 환경의 열악으로 원어민 교사를 제대로 활용하기 어려운 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 온라인 화상 시스템으로 원어민 교사에 의한 수업을 지원하고 온라인 컨텐츠를 활용하여 수준별 개별화 교육을 지원하는 하이브리드 모델을 통하여 학업 성취도를 높이는데 있다. 본 연구는 대도시, 중도시, 농어촌 소도시의 3개 집단에서 초 중등 2개 학교씩 6개 학교의 150명을 대상으로 3개월간 적용하였다. 연구방법은 하이브리드 모델의 적용 전후를 T-테스트를 통하여 비교하는 실험연구를 중심으로 하였다. 영어 교육에 적용 후 분석 결과 이해력은 상위 집단이 쓰기 능력은 하위 집단이 높게 향상되었다. 전체 영어 능력 향상 정도는 하위 집단이 상위 집단보다 높았다.

On Optimal Conditions in Setting Up Tasks for the Elementary Classroom: A Case Study of Two Classes

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal conditions for designing tasks appropriate to the elementary classroom based on the correspondence with the national curriculum, integration among four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), authenticity, and interactivity. For this study, two primary English teachers volunteered to participate in the case study conducted in the spring semester of the 2012 school year. Each class observed was composed of 29 and 30 sixth graders (12-year-old learners). Data were collected through classroom observation and lesson plans. Optimality theory was used to analyze data from the lessons. From the findings, the overall ranking of constraints is Curriculum ${\gg}$ Integration ${\gg}$ Authenticity ${\gg}$ Interactivity. It is also shown that for teacher 'L', the tasks such as 'guessing game', 'photo of me', and 'role play' were appropriate to help students ask questions and give reasons for their choices. As for teacher 'C', the tasks such as 'hand spans', 'transport survey', and 'picture telling' needed to be considered in order to help students understand and write comparative sentences.

A use of songs for Teaching English Pronunciation in Elementary School

  • How to teach intelligible, communicative pronunciation is a continuous question in the English education. Without good input, we can not expect good output. However, in EFL situation, it is very difficult to input the good English pronunciation, therefore, we have to find out the efficient and effective material for teaching pronunciation. One of the materials is song, because songs contain the linguistic and cultural traits of the language. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the reason why songs are good for teaching pronunciation. Koreans, who are syllable timed language users, have difficulties in English pronunciation of stress, rhythm, consonants cluster, linking or blending in connected speech. The 134 songs from wee sing are analyzed for how these traits show in songs. The result shows that we can acquire the traits easily and naturally through songs. And a lesson plan is offered as an example for teaching songs.

Metrical Comparison of English Textbooks in East Asian Countries, the U.S.A. and U.K.

  • In 2000, the economy of Asia made a V-character type recovery from the currency and financial crisis in 1997. The increase in exports is assumed to be one of the causes. To negotiate with foreign countries, English must be indispensable in many cases. In this study, we investigated how English education is performed in East Asian countries while focusing on English textbooks. We metrically analyzed some textbooks used junior high schools and high school in Japan and Korea, and elementary schools in China and Singapore to compare them with U.S.A and U.K textbook. We investigated some characteristics of character-and word-appearance of English textbook using an exponential function. Moreover we derived the degree of difficulty far each material through the variety of words and their frequency on the basis of the required English vocabulary in Japanese junior high schools. As a result we could show at which level of U.S.A. or U.K the English textbooks used in East Asian countries are.

Are Traditional Motivation Theories Used in Face-to-Face Classes Valid in an E-learning Environment?: Focusing on the Self-Determination Theory

  • This research aims to develop an elementary school English e-learning system based on the 'Self-determination theory (SDT)', which is widely applied to traditional face-to-face foreign language classes. The study also attempts to verify whether SDT-a traditional motivational theory that has been applied to face-to-face classes- is effective in an e-Learning environment with students who use this newly developed system. For the purposes of this project, the following three actions were carried out. First, a motivational strategy based on SDT was deduced. In SDT, the needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness were introduced as basic psychological needs, and assumed that these three needs provided the natural motivation for learning, growth, and development. Second, an e-Learning system was created based on the deduced motivational strategy. Third, the system was implemented in 115 private tuition academies, and education was provided to 1,400 users for one year across the country. Afterwards, by surveying users, correlation between the role of the three psychological needs in learning English, and also the correlation between each need and motivation were investigated. Research results showed that traditional motivational theories used in face-to-face classes so far were effective in an e-Learning environment.

웹 환경에서 아동을 위한 원격영어교육관리시스템 설계 (A Design for Web-based Distance Learning and Management System of Children's English Education)

  • 현재 아동을 대상으로 한 원격교육관리시스템은 그 수가 미미할 뿐만 아니라 주로 성인을 대상으로 한 원격교육시스템을 모델로 하였기 때문에 아동의 교육적 특성을 충분히 반영하지 못하였다. 본 연구에서는 아동의 교육적 흥미를 극대화하기 위하여 보다 효과적인 웹기반 실시간 원격영어교육관리시스템의 기능들을 제안하고자 한다. 특히 실제로 원격영어교육시스템을 이용하고 있는 초등학생들을 대상으로 하여 사용실태조사를 하고 이를 토대로 실시간, 양방향 교육서비스 제공의 필요성을 논의하고 학부모들에게 자녀의 교육과정을 실시간으로 관람토록 함으로써 보다 효율적인 아동교육프로그램을 제공하는 교육관리시스템을 제안하고자 한다.

순환 신경망 기반 언어 모델을 활용한 초등 영어 글쓰기 자동 평가 (Automatic Evaluation of Elementary School English Writing Based on Recurrent Neural Network Language Model)

  • 작성된 문서의 문법적 오류 교정을 할 때 맞춤법 검사기를 사용하는 것이 일반적이다. 그러나 초등학생들이 작성한 글 중에는 문법적으로는 옳더라도 자연스럽지 않은 문장이 있을 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 동일한 의미를 가진 2개의 문장이 주어졌을 때, 어떤 것이 더 자연스러운 문장인지 자동 판별할 수 있는 방법을 소개한다. 이 방법은 순환 신경망(recurrent neural network)을 이용하여 장기 의존성(long-term dependencies) 문제를 해결하고, 보조 단어(subword)를 사용하여 희소 단어(rare word) 문제를 해결한다. 약 200만 문장의 단일어 코퍼스를 통해 순환 신경망 기반 언어 모델을 학습하였다. 그 결과, 초등학생들이 주로 틀리는 표현들과 그에 대응하는 올바른 표현을 입력으로 주었을 때, 모든 경우에 대해 자연스러운 표현을 자동으로 선별할 수 있었다. 본 소프트웨어가 스마트 기기에 사용될 수 있는 형태로 구현된다면 실제 초등학교 현장에서 활용 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

잠재 디리클레 할당(LDA) 기반의 토픽모델링 분석을 통한 '초등과학교육' 학술지 연구논문의 주제 및 변화 (An Examination of the Topics and Changes in the Research Papers Published in the Journal of Korean Elementary Science Education Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation for the Topic Modeling Analysis)

  • 본 연구에서는 한국초등과학교육학회의 지난 50년을 돌아보기 위하여, '초등과학교육'에 게재된 연구논문들이 어떤 주제로 어떻게 변화했는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 창간호(1983)년부터 2021년까지 '초등과학교육' 학술지에 게재된 연구논문의 총 1,065개 영문초록들에 대하여 LDA 기반 토픽모델링 분석을 실시하였다. LDA 분석 결과 총 14개의 토픽들이 추출되었으며, 핵심어 및 핵심 문서를 통해 각 토픽들에 담긴 의미를 분석하였다. 또한 시기별로 각 토픽들의 추이를 파악하기 위해, 3년을 주기로 하여 토픽들의 평균 비중값 변화를 분석하고 선형회귀 분석을 통해 통계적으로 유의미하게 증가 또는 감소한 토픽들을 분석하였다. 끝으로 본 연구의 결과를 통해, 향후 초등과학교육 연구 수행 및 지원을 위한 시사점을 논의하였다.
