USING ASTRONOMY AND BOTANY TO IMPROVE WRITING SKILLS

  • Astronomy is one of the interesting but difficult topics in science for elementary education. Therefore, it is interesting to create astronomy activities that children can understand clearly. The researchers developed activities by using astronomy and botany to improve writing skills. They have to glue the local flowers on the star pictures then write the name of those flowers, the name of the constellation and write an essay describing their work. The participants are into two groups. 71 $3^{rd}$ year undergraduate students who registered for teaching and are learning science as an elementary education subjec, and 10 $1^{st}$ grade student from the laboratory school of Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat university. We can conclude that both groups were more interested in astronomy, they can tell the name of local flowers and not only used their imagination to create their work, but also to write great essays.

Introducing the History of Science in Modem Korea into the Elementary Classroom (한국 근현대 과학사의 초등교육 활용 방안)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of introducing the history of science in modern Korea into elementary education. Although there are many studies on applying a history of science to science education, they do not pay attention to the history of science in modern Korea. I survey research papers on the history of science in modern Korea and science education based on a history of science, and elementary science textbooks in Korea, Japan and the US. When we apply the history of science in modern Korea into elementary education, elementary students will recognize science has close relations to Korean culture and history and they will develop the familiarity with science. I show there are 3 ways using the history of science in modern Korea in elementary education: 1) Applying Korean scientists' research contents to science education, 2) Measures to evaluate Korean scientists correctly, 3) Materials for science education programs for gifted elementary students.

  • Teacher, the guide of classwork, should acquire various an new knowledge and provide them for students timely. Owing to various reasons, however, they have some difficulties in research and in prior knowledge acquisition. This study is focused on the database construction scheme of elementary education data for everyone in any school and in any place to share those data. This can be accomplished by constructing a database system of elementary education data that are scattered nationwide and by providing them through present educational network.

The Meta-Analysis on Effects of Elementary Education Programs Adopting Arduino (아두이노 활용 초등 교육 프로그램의 효과에 대한 메타분석)

  • This study was designed to implement the meta-analysis for figuring out effects of elementary education programs adopting Arduino. The researcher carefully chose and analyzed 12 primary studies including theses, dissertations, and journal articles. Results were as follows. First, the total effect size of elementary education programs adopting Arduino was 0.519. Second, the effect sizes by the grade levels were 5th grade 0.737, integration of 5th and 6th grade 0.533, and 6th grade 0.472 in order. Third, for status of students, the effect sizes were gifted and talented 0.607 and normal 0.522 in order. Fourth, for subject areas, the effect sizes were environment 0.708, software 0.572, practical arts 0.526, science 0.523, integrated 0.402, and fine arts 0.18 in order. Fifth, for types of programming, the effect sizes were graphic based programming 0.555, text and graphic based programming 0.47, and text based programming 0.464 in order. Sixth, for curriculum types, the effect sizes were extra curriculum 0.636 and regular curriculum 0.51 in order.

On the Direction of the Application of the Concepts of Computational Thinking for Elementary Education (Computational Thinking의 초등교육 활용 방향)

  • The notion of computational thinking is currently gaining much attention from a variety of disciplines. Accordingly, computer education community needs to address this issue for formal education. In the paper, the translation issue on the terminology - 'computational thinking' - is discussed. As a brief introduction to computational thinking the characteristics and necessities as well as its importance are presented. The types of learning computational thinking are presented, which are learning with computing tools on one hand and without them on the other hand. Furthermore, learning objectives of computational thinking as well as the contents are also investigated for the application of computational thinking in elementary education. A survey was conducted for thirty three elementary school teachers on behalf of investigating directions of teaching computational thinking in elementary education. It shows that almost all respondents agree to teaching computational thinking in formal education and it also shows other interesting results as stated in the paper.

  • Elementary education in Korea has variously changed and developed during the last thirty years. Among all the progressive changes, the improvement of teaching conditions is considered to be the most fundamental one. The number of students assigned to a class or a teacher has decreased to a considerable extent. Cyber teaching-learning has been peformed at school and home, and English education has been emerged as a significant part of the Korean public education. The research issues constantly considered essential over the past three decades starting in the 1980's are those related to curricula, teaching-learning methods, training of teachers in-service, and education for upright characters. The practical and political issues should be dealt with to revise the three integrated subjects and text books into a sole integrated subject and text book, to double the credential of teachers in terms of professionalism and to decrease the number of students per teacher in Korea to the OECD level.

  • This study aimed at examining the problems in character education in early childhood education and elementary education in Korea and at providing policy implications for more effective character education. The study interviewed 20 teachers from child care centers, kindergartens and elementary schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province using the focus group interview method. The results showed teachers' level of understanding of the definition and purpose of character education. Teachers experienced difficulty because they lacked a manual as well as training for character education and because of the inconsistency between character education and the burden of academic performance. The lack of connection among character education in early childhood education and elementary school, strong needs for parent education, and partnership between the three spheres of the home, school, and community were also implied.

  • 체계적인 교육과정의 부재로 인한 학교 현장의 파행적 운영과 컴퓨터를 타 교과의 효율적 학습을 위한 도구로만 인식하는 활용 위주의 컴퓨터 교육은 정보 소양을 등한시 하는 결과를 낳았다. 미국, 프랑스, 영국, 일본 등 교육 선진국은 활용을 위한 컴퓨터교육 뿐 아니라 체계적인 정보 소양 교육을 실시하고 있고 현재 많은 현장의 초등 교사들도 정보 소양 교육의 체계적인 교육 과정의 필요성을 느끼고 있으며 현장에서 초등학생들에게 쉽게 적용할 수 있는 컴퓨터 교육 내용을 원하고 있다. 정보화 사회에서 초등학생에 맞는 교육 내용의 구성은 컴퓨터의 바른 인식과 그 과정에서 얻어질 논리적인 사고력의 자연적 학습이 가능 할 것이며 정보화 시대의 요구에 부응하는 인간 형성에 기여 할 것이다. 그러므로 정보화 시대를 살아갈 우리 아동들에게 초등 컴퓨터 교육의 올바른 방향은 정보 소양 중심의 컴퓨터 교육 과정으로 체계적인 교육과정과 교과로서의 독립적인 운영과 초등 수준에 맞는 교육 내용의 구성이다.

  • The purpose of this study is to allow all of the instructors including field instructors to understand relation between school education and computer, generalize and analyze basic data required to acquire basic knowledge to help utilizing the computer for education and seek for understanding. This study intented to present a method to activate computer education focused on utilization education at the elementary education stage. Accordingly, those computer educations on middle/high schools and universities and through social educations have been excluded from the object of the study. In order to conduct fruitful computer education, several supporting systems should be equipped completely such as teachers, facilities, software, etc. Especially, practical experience of using computer is the most important element in the computer education, every school should be equipped with computers to prepare for its generalization. Roles of the teachers have also very important influence on it. Research and development of education software require expert knowledge and enormous time and effort and the developed software should be followed by the systematic evaluation on its quality.
