  • The quantitative study of the groundwater contamination in a porous media is a difficult task. For complex problems, numerical solutions are the most effective means to study the movement of contaminants in the groundwater, The solute transport model used in this study has proved to be an efficient tool to model contaminant transport for complex problems. The model demonstrates its effectiveness in reproducing the coniamination by ihlorides of the groundwater at the landfill site due to leachath from the wastes. It describes the two dimentional solute transport and alteration of the water quality and forecasts the contamination for different management alternatives of the landfill. The model also indicates how the groundwater contamination can be contained within the lower site if a barrier is constructed downstream of the disposed wastes.

  • In the present study, analysis of contaminant transport through one dimensional unsaturated stratified media using element free Galerkin method has been presented. Element free Galerkin method is a meshfree method. A FORTRAN code has been developed for the same. The developed model is compared with the results available in the literature and are found in good agreement. Further a parametric study has been conducted to examine the effects of various parameters like velocity, dispersivity, retardation factor and effect of saturation on the contaminant flow. The results presented conclude that transport of contaminant is retarded in unsaturated zone in comparison with the saturated zone.

  • In modern conditions of world economic development the integral element of stable social and economic development of the separate countries of the world is the level of their transport infrastructure development, on the one hand capability to effectively provide economic communications between regions inside the country, and capability to integrate into world economic. The condition of a transport infrastructure and its possibility in sphere of maintenance of national participants of foreign trade are reflected in many respects on competitiveness of production, made by them, in the world market and, as consequence, on a country role in economic.

  • Recently, as the infocomindustry is developed, the semiconductor industry as well as the optical industry such as the optical communication and the optical instrument is developed rapidly. The transmission, storage and processing of information has been reaching an limit because amounts of information increase rapidly. The more quickly the optical communication is developed, the more sharply the demand of optical elements increase. The transport and inspection process is time consuming and the error rate is high, because this process are not automated in case of an optical lens. In this paper, the pick-up system that can hold optical elements and be transferred by the ultrasonic transport system is developed. The inspection system that distinguishes between the existence and the nonexistence of a defect is connected easily to pick-up system. The pick-up system separates the optical glass lens by results of the inspection. The automation program is developed by visual c++ programming.

  • Cohesive sediment transport in coastal region has been studied by numerical modeling. A finite element numerical model was setup to simulate hydrodynamics and sediment transport in the coastal region with complex topography. Only physical features of observed sediments has been used to determine erosion rates of bottom sediments together with the previous research results. The simulation results using the simply determined equation of erosion rates were compared with time variations of the observed SS concentration and showed good agreements. In conclusion, this method can be used to estimate transport of cohesive sediment conveniently.

  • A complete finite element analysis method for discharge onset process, which is governed and coupled by charge transport equation and electric field equation, was presented. The charge transport equation of first order was transformed into a second-order one by utilizing the artificial diffusion scheme. The two second-order equations were analyzed by the finite element formulation which is well-developed for second-order ones. The Fowler-Nordheim injection boundary condition was adopted for charge transport equation. After verifying the numerical results by comparing to the analytic solutions using parallel plane electrodes with one carrier system, we extended the result to blade-plane electrodes in 2D xy geometry with three carriers system. Radius of the sharp tip was taken to be 50 ${\mu}m$. When this sharp geometry was solved by utilizing the space discretizing methods, the very sharp tip was found to cause a singularity in electric field and space charge distribution around the tip. To avoid these numerical difficulties in the FEM, finer meshes, a higher order shape function, and artificial diffusion scheme were employed.

  • This paper describes an hp-angular adaptivity algorithm in the discrete ordinates method for Boltzmann transport applications with strong angular effects. This adaptivity uses discontinuous finite element quadrature sets with different degrees, which updates both angular mesh and the degree of the underlying discontinuous finite element basis functions, allowing different angular local refinement to be applied in space. The regular and goal-based error metrics are considered in this algorithm to locate some regions to be refined. A mapping algorithm derived by moment conservation is developed to pass the angular solution between spatial regions with different quadrature sets. The proposed method is applied to some test problems that demonstrate the ability of this hp-angular adaptivity to resolve complex fluxes with relatively few angular unknowns. Results illustrate that a reduction to approximately 1/50 in quadrature ordinates for a given accuracy compared with uniform angular discretization. This method therefore offers a highly efficient angular adaptivity for investigating difficult particle transport problems.

  • In this paper, the coupled model with hydrogen transport and elasto-plasticity behavior is introduced. This model is implemented to the general-purpose FE code, ABAQUS, via the user-defined subroutine UMAT and UMATHT. In UMAT, the spatial gradients of hydrostatic stress and hydrogen induced deformation are calculated, and then are passed into UMATHT. Heat transfer equation within UMATHT is substituted by hydrogen transport equation including the effects of stress states and strain hardening. To validate this model, the finite element analyses coupled with hydrogen transport and mechanical loading are performed for the boundary layer specimens with low and high strength steel properties. The FE results are compared with the previous studies by Taha and Sofronis (2001).

  • Mass transport near grain boundary in a magnetite bi-crystal has been estimated at 823 K by finite element method. Mass transport near grain boundary strongly depends on the diffusivities along grain boundary. If grain boundary diffusion has the same oxygen activity dependence as lattice diffusion, there is no mass transport between grains and grain boundary. On the other hand, mass transport between grains and grain boundary is observed in the case that grain boundary diffusion has different oxygen activity dependence.
