Electrostatic Spray Deposition Technique for Thin Film Fabrication

  • Electrospray deposition (ESD) technique is fast finding its applicability in the field of thin film device manufacturing processes and the ease and cost efficiency attached to ESD process with possible integration with batch manufacturing technologies is the potential future of thin film device manufacturing. As the name suggests, the deposition phenomenon should solely be a spray achieved through electrostatic forces. In fact it is an imbalance between the surface forces arising because of the surface tension of the liquid to be sprayed and Maxwell stresses which are induced because of the electric field, that pull the liquid downwards from the capillary into a stable jet which further disintegrates into smaller droplets because of coulomb forces and hence a cloud of charged, mono-dispersed and extremely diminutive (sometimes up to femtolitres) droplets is achieved. The present talk is going to be exclusively about the electrospray process concepts, generation and possible applications.

  • Many toxic pesticides as aqueous-base sprays are dispensed for protection of food crops from pests into farm fields. When dispensed with conventional nozzles, a large portion of the spray is often lost by airborne drifts of droplets away and lack of deposition onto the plants due to rapid gravitational settling of droplets to the soil beneath. And target deposition efficiencies poorer than 20% are often encountered in agricultural pesticides. An electrostatic spraying technology offers a very favorable means to increasing pesticides droplets deposition onto biological surfaces of living crops. In this paper a corona type spray nozzle, utilizing a set of corona charging devices and a pulsed droplet-charging voltage applied, has been proposed and tested its potential experimentally. As a result, it exhibits a large current deposition of aqueous pesticide sprays on the sensing target, which, however, promise to be as one of the effective electrostatic spraying nozzle.

수평공진형 다결정실리콘 미소액추에이터의 설계, 제작 및 시험 (Design, Microfabricaiton and Testing of Laterally-Resonating Polysilicon Microactuators)

  • This paper presents the design, fabrication, and testing of polysilicon electrostatic microactuators that resonate in the direction parallel to the silicon susbstrates. A set of six different designs has been developed using a theoretical model and design formulae developed for the mocroactuators. Microactuator prototypes are fabricated from a 2.1 $\mu{m}$-thick LPCVD polysilicon film, using a 4-mask surface-micromachining process. The prototypes are tested under a d.c. bias voltage of 45V with an a.c. drive voltage amplitude of 20 v.Measured resorant frequencies are in the ranges of 40-60 kHz, showing a good agreement to their theoretical estimates within error bounds of .$\pm$.5%. Important issues inthe design and microfabrication of the microactuators are discussed, together with potential applicaitons of the key technology involved.

  • Numerical modeling is used to investigate the perturbation of a single Langmuir probe (0.2 mm diameter shielded with 6 mm insulator) inserted along the center axis of a cylindrical inductively coupled plasma chamber filled with Ar at 10 mTorr and driven by 13 MHz. The probe was driven by a sine wave. When the probe tip is close to a substrate by 24.5 mm, the probe characteristics was unperturbed. At 10 mm above the substrate, the time averaged electric potential distribution around the tip was severly distorted making a normal probe analysis impossible.

  • Numerical simulations for the effects of secondary flow and turbulence diffusion on the particle concentration distributions have been carried out for the single stage electrostatic precipitator. The electrohydrodynamic secondary flow, particle concentration distribution and collection efficiency have been evaluated as a function of dimensionless parameters such as Re, $N_{end}$, $P_{e}$ x. The results of simulations show that for increasing secondary flow intensity the concentration distribution is drastically deformed and collection efficiency is decreased which is more than due to turbulent diffusion.n.n.

  • Spacecrafts such as most of commercial satellites that are operating in the geostationary orbit can be subjected to intense irradiation by charged particles. The surface made of dielectric materials can therefore become probable sites for damaging electrostatic discharges. Thanks to a specially equipped chamber, the spatial environment can be reproduced experimentally in the laboratory. In this paper, the behavior of high energy electrons injected in polymers such as PolyMethylMetaAcrylate (PMMA) and Kapton is studied. Results obtained by surface potential technique, pulse-electro acoustic device and a cell based on the split Faraday cup system are analyzed and discussed.

Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (QSAR) Study on C-7 Substituted Quinolone

  • To see the quantitative relationship between the structures of the C-7 substituted quinolones and their antibacterial activities, theoretical parameters such as the molecular van der Waals volume, surface area and some electrostatic parameters based on the molecular electrostatic potential, which represent lipophilicity, and some quantum mechanical parameters are introduced as descriptors. The sixteen substituted quinolone derivatives and twenty bacteria are used for the study. It is found that the QSARs of C-7 substituted quinolones are obtained for eleven bacteria and our descriptors are more useful for Gram positive organisms than negative ones. It is also shown that molecular surface area (or molecular Waals volume) of the C-7 substituent and net charge of C-7 atom of the quinolones are the descriptors of utmost importance.

고에너지 함유 옥세탄류의 정전기 전위 및 화학 반응성 연구 (A Study on Electrostatic Potentials and Chemical Reactivities of Energetic Oxetanes)

  • 산촉매하에서 중합반응을 하는 고에너지를 함유한 옥세탄 유도체들을 ab initio HF/3-21G 방법으로 구조, 전하, 정전기 전위 등을 계산하고 그 결과를 고찰하였다. 계산 결과에 의하면 큰 치환체가 도입되거나 양성자화나 $BF_3$ 착물화에 의해 옥세탄 고리의 구조는 상당히 변화하며, 이것은 정전기적 상호작용이나 구조적 척력으로 설명할 수 있다. 옥세탄 유도체들의 친핵성 및 염기성은 옥세탄 산소원자의 음전하와 최소 정전기 전위의 크기로 설명할 수 있다. 공중합하의 옥세탄 유도체들의 반응성은 (1) 옥세탄 유도체의 염기성과 (2) 옥세탄 유도체의 HOMO 에너지와 활성화 옥세탄 중합 고리의 LUMO 에너지의 차에 의해 설명되어진다. 계산에 의하면 3-azidomethyl-3-methyl oxetane (AMMO)이 3-nitratomethyl-3-methyl oxetane (NMMO)보다 염기성이 크며, AMMO나 NMMO 사슬에 관계없이 반응성이 큼을 알 수 있다. 이 계산 결과는 이미 알려진 실험 결과들과 잘 일치한다.

On-line streaming potential 측정에 의한 in-line 약품응집/정밀여과 공정의 최적화 (Optimization of In-line Coagulation/MF Process Using On-line Streaming Potential Measurement)

  • Microfiltration with in-line rapid coagulation for drinking water production was examined. The in-line rapid coagulation was conducted using newly developed mixing device instantaneous flash mixer. The flux decline during membrane filtration was monitored with coagulant dosage varied. Flux decline was minimized at 1.1mg/L of coagulant dosage, where streaming potential of coagulated water was near zero. The optimum dosage for the process control was explained by dimensionless distance (${\kappa}{\times}a$) of particle pairs, obtained from electrophoresis parameter describing electrostatic repulsion relative to Van der Waals energy between particle pairs in the pre-coagulated water.

Electric double layers interactions under condition of variable dielectric permittivity

  • In this paper, a theoretical method has been developed for the electric double layer interaction under condition of the variable dielectric permittivity of water. Using Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE), for one plate and two plates having similar or dissimilar constant charge or constant potential, we have investigated the electric double layer potential, its gradient and the disjoining pressure as well as the effect of variation of dielectric permittivity on these parameters. It has been assumed that plates are separated by a specific distance and contain a liquid solution in between. It is shown that reduction of the dielectric permittivity near the interfaces results in compression of electric double layers and affects the potential and its gradient which leads to a decreased electrostatic repulsion. In addition, it is shown that variation of dielectric permittivity in the case of higher electrolyte concentration, leads to a greater change in potential distribution between two plates.
